Progression of Alzheimer's disease parallels unusual structural plasticity of human dentate granule cells.

Alzheimer´s disease (AD), the most common form of dementia in industrialized countries, severely targets the hippocampal formation in humans and mouse models of this condition. The adult hippocampus hosts the continuous addition of new dentate granule cells (DGCs) in numerous mammalian species, including humans. Although the morphology and positioning of DGCs within the granule cell layer (GCL) match their developmental origin in rodents, a similar correlation has not been reported in humans to date. Our data reveal that DGCs located in inner portions of the human GCL show shorter and less com

Persistent Infection and Long-Term Carriage of Typhoidal and Nontyphoidal Salmonellae.

The ability of pathogenic bacteria to affect higher organisms and cause disease is one of the most dramatic properties of microorganisms. Some pathogens can establish transient colonization only, but others are capable of infecting their host for many years or even for a lifetime. Long-term infection is called persistence, and this phenotype is fundamental for the biology of important human pathogens, including Helicobacter pylori, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Salmonella enterica Both typhoidal and nontyphoidal serovars of the species Salmonella enterica can cause persistent infection in hu

Human Permanent Ectoparasites; Recent Advances on Biology and Clinical Significance of Demodex Mites: Narrative Review Article.

BACKGROUND: Demodex is a genus of mites living predominantly in mammalian pilosebaceous units. They are commonly detected in the skin of face, with increasing numbers in inflammatory lesions. Causation between Demodex mites and inflammatory diseases, such as rosacea, blepharitis, perioral and seborrhoeic dermatitis or chalazion, is controversially discussed. Clinical observations indicate a primary form of human Demodex infection. The aim of this review was to highlight the biological aspects of Demodex infestation and point out directions for the future research. METHODS: We conducted a broa

Detection of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA and antigen in the circulating mononuclear cell fractions of humans and koalas.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a common respiratory pathogen of humans which, in addition to causing disease at the respiratory site, has recently been linked to disease at other body sites. If C. pneumoniae does contribute to disease at nonrespiratory sites, then it must have a mechanism by which it reaches these sites. We analyzed the peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) fractions from 60 healthy human blood donors for the presence of C. pneumoniae DNA (by ompA PCR) and chlamydial antigens (by genus- and species-specific monoclonal antibody staining). Ten of the sixty (16. 7%) blood donors were

Monoclonal antibody-mediated tumor regression by induction of apoptosis.

To characterize cell surface molecules involved in control of growth of malignant lymphocytes, monoclonal antibodies were raised against the human B lymphoblast cell line SKW6.4. One monoclonal antibody, anti-APO-1, reacted with a 52-kilodalton antigen (APO-1) on a set of activated human lymphocytes, on malignant human lymphocyte lines, and on some patient-derived leukemic cells. Nanogram quantities of anti-APO-1 completely blocked proliferation of cells bearing APO-1 in vitro in a manner characteristic of a process called programmed cell death or apoptosis. Cell death was preceded by changes

Clinical and pathological features of Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus-associated inflammatory cytokine syndrome.

: Kaposi sarcoma Herpesvirus (KSHV)-associated inflammatory cytokine syndrome (KICS) is an uncommon but aggressive human Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus associated disorder that is mostly reported in people living with HIV. The diagnosis of KICS is based on clinical criteria, and, in contrast to other KSHV-related malignancies, characteristic pathological features have not yet been described. We report novel clinical and pathological features in an HIV-1 infected patient diagnosed with KICS.

HHV 6-7 reactivation causing Pityriasis Rosea and labyrinthitis: A case report.

Pityriasis Rosea (PR) and labyrinthitis are most commonly caused by viral infections. PR presents with a characteristic rash while labyrinthitis presents with vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. However, the coexistence of PR and Labyrinthitis remains an uncommon event. Human Herpes Virus (HHV) 6 and 7, are common infections in childhood, and their reactivation causes Pityriasis Rosea. But these viruses are not known to have any involvement with the inner ear or the 8th cranial nerve (CN).

Is botulism type C transmissible to human by consumption of contaminated poultry meat? Analysis of a suspect outbreak in French Guyana.

Botulism type C was suspected in a 46-year old man after consumption of sick poultry from a flock where botulism type C was confirmed. The patient developed characteristic signs of botulism, but investigation of biological samples did not confirm the presence of Clostridium botulinum or botulinum toxin. Despite having classical botulism symptoms, the man recovered very quickly. This raises the question of botulism transmission to humans by ingestion of contaminated poultry.

The influence of chlorpromazine on the potential-induced shape change of human erythrocyte.

The effect of chlorpromazine (CPZ) on the shape of human erythrocytes with different values of transmembrane potential (TMP) was investigated. The shape of red blood cells with negative values of the TMP remained unchanged after the formation of stomatocytes by chlorpromazine, while cells with positive TMP showed a characteristic time course of shape change during the incubation with CPZ. Experiments with vanadate show that this might be due to a difference in the activity of the phospholipid-translocase at different values of TMP.

[Arvicola terrestris (L.), the first rodent found naturally infested with Echinosoccus multilocularis, Leuckart, 1863, in France].

One of 400 A. terrestris trapped in the east of France (Jura and Alpes), contained a hepatic hydatid characteristic of the species E. multilocularis. 1 296 other Rodents, belonging to 11 species had been previously screened unsuccessfully. This positive result and the close resemblance between the distribution of the human cases of the disease and the areas of maximum proliferation of A. terrestris suggests that this species can play an important role in the persistence and geographic localisation of the zoonose.

Simulation study of exoskeleton-musculoskeletal coupling for exoskeleton assistance via multi-agent reinforcement learning.

To address the wearable exoskeletons' core bottlenecks, difficulty in personalized adaptation, over-reliance on iterative human experiments, and poor generalization across multiple working conditions. This study proposes a musculoskeletal-exoskeleton coupled assistance framework based on heterogeneous multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), with deep integration of biomechanical principles. A high-fidelity OpenSim simulation environment is constructed, incorporating a bilaterally symmetric 7 degrees of freedom (7-DOFs) lower-limb musculoskeletal model and a hip-assist exoskeleton, which are

Nicotine Ameliorates α-Synuclein Preformed Fibril-Induced Behavioral Deficits and Pathological Features in Mice.

Epidemiologic study suggests that nicotine reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) and thus could serve as a potential treatment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of nicotine on the behavioral phenotypes and pathological characteristics of mice induced by human alpha-synuclein preformed fibers (α-syn-PFF). Mice were injected with 5 µg of human α-syn-PFF in the hippocampus while administering nicotine-containing drinking water (200 µg/mL). After 1 month, the motor ability, mood, spatial learning, and memory ability of the PD phenotype-like model mice were detected using op

Emerging zoonotic threats: HKU5-CoV-2 and the CBRNE approach to pandemic prevention.

The emergence of HKU5-CoV-2, a novel lineage in the Merbecovirus subgenus, represents a potential zoonotic threat with significant implications for global health. This bat-derived virus, which is phylogenetically similar to the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, has demonstrated the ability to use the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor to enter human cells. Although no human infections have been reported, its zoonotic potential raises the possibility of spillover events, which could lead to widespread transmission and,

Eyes shut homolog (EYS): Connecting molecule to disease.

Eyes shut homologue (EYS) stands out as one of the most commonly mutated genes causing autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (arRP), with a worldwide prevalence ranging from 1.2 % to 23.5 %. The EYS gene is predominantly expressed in retinal photoreceptor cells, where four transcripts have been identified, each varying in length. The human EYS protein initiates with a signal peptide and comprises 21 epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains in its N-terminal followed by five C-terminal LamG domains, interspersed among additional EGF repeats. The existence of different isoforms suggests pot

222 nm far-UVC light and skin health: Assessment of DNA damage across different skin types.

Due to a limited penetration into skin and eyes combined with a broad germicidal effectiveness, far-UVC light (200-235 nm) has been proposed as an effective intervention for airborne pandemic control. Specifically, 222 nm light is not predicted to damage skin because it is primarily absorbed by the proteins in the superficial stratum corneum of the epidermis. Thus, it is hypothesized that the thickness of the stratum corneum is one of the most significant contributing factors to the risk of skin damage from exposure to far-UVC. From measurements of the stratum corneum thickness in live human s

From pollution to palpitations: the heart's silent battle with microplastics.

The pervasive presence of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the environment has raised growing concerns regarding their potential health impacts. While research has progressively revealed the toxicological effects of MNPs, limited attention has been given to their specific influence on the cardiovascular system, particularly in human models. This systematic review synthesizes current evidence on MNP-induced cardiotoxicity, highlighting both physiological outcomes and underlying mechanisms.A total of 72 studies-including in vivo experiments on aquatic species and rodents, and in vitro as
