Early changes of the portal tract on microcomputed tomography images in a newly-developed rat model for Budd-Chiari syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The effect of increased sinusoidal pressure on the portal tract in Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is as yet not elucidated. Our aim was to investigate portal changes in a newly-developed rat model for BCS. METHODS: We created an outflow obstruction in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 6) by diameter reduction of the inferior vena cava. Left and right liver lobes with portal vein contrast were scanned using microcomputed tomography, and volumes of the portal tree and liver parenchyma were computed by the ANALYZE software program. RESULTS: Portal branching density was significantly lowe

Disc space-targeted angled axial MR images of the lumbar spine: a potential source of diagnostic error.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the sensitivities of contiguous axial (CA) images and disc space-targeted angled axial (DSTAA) images of the lumbar spine for: (1) the detection of spondylolysis defects, and (2) the identification of disc material which has migrated away from the parent disc. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective imaging of the lumbar spine was performed over a 22-month period in 103 patients. Imaging protocols included spin-echo T1- and fast spin-echo (FSE) T2-weighted images in the sagittal and axial planes. For each patient, axial images were obtained both contiguously throughout the lu

Internal capsule size in good-outcome and poor-outcome schizophrenia.

Converging lines of research suggest that white matter abnormalities may be central to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to examine regional white matter in the anterior limb of the internal capsules in patients with schizophrenia. The authors obtained high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging in 106 patients with schizophrenia and 42 age and sex-matched healthy comparison subjects. The area of the anterior limb of the internal capsule was measured at five proportionately spaced dorsal-to-ventral levels. Schizophrenia patients were divided into good-outcome a

A new algorithm for distorted fingerprints matching based on normalized fuzzy similarity measure.

Coping with nonlinear distortions in fingerprint matching is a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel algorithm, normalized fuzzy similarity measure (NFSM), to deal with the nonlinear distortions. The proposed algorithm has two main steps. First, the template and input fingerprints were aligned. In this process, the local topological structure matching was introduced to improve the robustness of global alignment. Second, the method NFSM was introduced to compute the similarity between the template and input fingerprints. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on fingerprints databases of

Detection of breast masses in mammograms by density slicing and texture flow-field analysis.

We propose a method for the detection of masses in mammographic images that employs Gaussian smoothing and sub-sampling operations as preprocessing steps. The mass portions are segmented by establishing intensity links from the central portions of masses into the surrounding areas. We introduce methods for analyzing oriented flow-like textural information in mammograms. Features based on flow orientation in adaptive ribbons of pixels across the margins of masses are proposed to classify the regions detected as true mass regions or false-positives (FPs). The methods yielded a mass versus normal

Texture Analysis of SPECT-MPI Provides Prognostic Value in Improving Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Response.

BACKGROUND: Texture analysis (TA) is a powerful tool for extracting quantitative information, assessing myocardial heterogeneity, evaluating therapeutic efficacy, and predicting outcomes in heart disease. This study investigated whether TA based on gated single-photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (SPECT MPI) can enhance the prediction of response to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). METHODS: A total of 165 patients who underwent gated SPECT MPI and received CRT were enrolled in the study. Quantitative analysis of SPECT imaging generated 1225 TA features. Ph

The Effect of Position on Radiographic Angle Measurements of the Lower Extremities.

PURPOSE: Accurately measuring an angle on a lower extremity X-ray is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, the angle is often affected by position, especially with flexion contracture and rotation. To date, there have been no quantitative analyses examining the relationship between lower extremity angle and patient position and no studies targeting patients with deformities. The aim of this study is to quantify the effect of position on angle measurements in lower extremity X-rays and to compare the effect in patients with different deformities. METH

The orthogonal measurements approach in estimating spleen size on CT images.

PURPOSE: To find out which single measurement and/or linear regression model correlates well with splenic volume using the orthogonal measurements approach. METHODS: The study relied on retrospective analysis of 205 contrast-enhanced abdominal CT examinations carried out in adult patients using a 320-detector CT system. CT volumetry was conducted by a semi-automated, model and threshold based segmentation algorithm that enables voxel-based volume calculation of abdominal organs. The orthogonal measurements were carried out in axial sections by measuring the maximum diameters of spleen project

MR arthrographic evaluation of the association between anterolateral soft tissue impingement and osteochondral lesion of the tibiotalar joint.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate on magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography the relationship between joint capsule thickness and the stage of osteochondral lesions of the tibiotalar joint, as well as to evaluate the ankle joint capacity in patients with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD). Also, we demonstrate the unusual locations of osteochondral lesions of the ankle joint. METHODS: MR arthrography images were analyzed by two staff radiologists in consensus. The normality of the data was analyzed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the relationship betwe

Factors Affecting Diffuse Axonal Injury under Blunt Impact and Proposal for a Head Injury Criteria: A Finite Element Analysis.

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is the most common pathological feature of brain injury which accounts for half of the traumatic lesions in the United States. Although direct shear strain measures indicate DAI, it is localized and varies greatly in the brain. It has limitations when correlated with the possibility and severity of DAI in different brain regions along different planes for variable factors. Rather, a statistical strain measure such as peak shear strain possibility (PSSP) is proposed as a head injury criteria. In this study, computer tomography (CT) was used to derive a finite element

Incremental Value of Live/Real Time Three-Dimensional over Two-Dimensional Transesophageal Echocardiography in the Assessment of Atrial Septal Pouch.

An atrial septal pouch (ASP) results from partial fusion of the septum primum and the septum secundum, and depending on the site of fusion, the pouch can be left-sided (LASP) or right-sided (RASP). LASPs have been described in association with thrombi found in patients admitted with acute strokes, raising awareness of its potential cardioembolic role, especially in those with no other clearly identifiable embolic source. We retrospectively studied 39 patients in whom the presence of an ASP had been identified by three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3DTEE) and who had a two-dimen

Central stentoplasty: technique for unipedicular single midline vertebral body stent implantation.

Vertebral body stenting, or stentoplasty, is a novel percutaneous option in spinal cement augmentation. Conventional stentoplasty requires insertion of two paramedian stents per vertebral body through a bipedicular approach. We developed an unipedicular approach in which we implant a single stent into the midline of the vertebral body using cone-beam CT guidance and hereby describe the technical details and feasibility, in this technique that we termed "central stentoplasty."

The anterior hippocampus supports a coarse, global environmental representation and the posterior hippocampus supports fine-grained, local environmental representations.

Representing an environment globally, in a coarse way, and locally, in a fine-grained way, are two fundamental aspects of how our brain interprets the world that surrounds us. The neural correlates of these representations have not been explicated in humans. In this study we used fMRI to investigate these correlates and to explore a possible functional segregation in the hippocampus and parietal cortex. We hypothesized that processing a coarse, global environmental representation engages anterior parts of these regions, whereas processing fine-grained, local environmental information engages p

Spinal and extraspinal deformities in a patient with dysspondyloenchondromatosis.

Anisospondyly (irregularly shaped vertebral bodies) and enchondroma-like lesions in the metaphyseal and diaphyseal portions of the long tubular bones are the characteristic features in patients with dysspondyloenchondromatosis (DSC). Thoraco-lumbar scoliosis and windswept deformity of the lower limbs were the major abnormalities encountered in this patient. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case report delineating the spine pathology via reformatted CT scan and the correction of a windswept deformity by means of temporary hemiepiphysiodesis in a patient with (DSC).

Novel application of human morphomics to quantify temporal soft tissues in Pierre Robin and Treacher Collins.

INTRODUCTION: Pierre Robin sequence (PR) and Treacher Collins syndrome (TC) are congenital disorders associated with multiple craniofacial abnormalities. The mandibular malformations linked with these maladies are closely associated with the form and function of the temporalis muscle. Despite these associations, a paucity of research has been directed at quantifying how these malformations affect the tissues of the temporal region. In this paper, we seek to quantify differences in the temporalis muscle and the temporal fat pad using a novel CT-derived analytic program to examine craniofacial m

Three-dimensional computed tomography for lung cancer in a patient with three right vein ostia.

Some variations in pulmonary vein anatomy can have serious consequences in patients undergoing lung surgery, but clinicians rarely encounter patients with these variations. We report here a thoracoscopic lobectomy for right lung cancer in a patient with three right vein ostia. Preoperative review of three-dimensional 64-row multidetector computed tomography (3D-MDCT) of the patient showed a variation that was not confirmed in transverse plane computed tomography films. However, the variant anomaly was confirmed during thoracoscopic right lower lobectomy. The postoperative course was uneventful
