The Role of Intestinal Ultrasonography in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endoscopic and histopathological evaluation are important in the diagnosis and follow-up of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but they are invasive methods. This study aimed to evaluate the use of ultrasonography (USG), a noninvasive examination, in diagnosing and monitoring children with IBD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included IBD and non-IBD patients who underwent a prospective diagnostic colonoscopy. After colonoscopy, bowel wall thickness (BWT) of the patients was measured using USG. Ultrasonographic, endoscopic, histological, and laboratory findings were then comp

Proximal ganglionic intestine in Hirschsprung Disease is fibrotic and stiff.

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a congenital intestinal disorder characterized by the absence of ganglia in the distal intestine. Despite surgical resection of the aganglionic intestine and pull-through surgery, patients with HSCR still experience bowel dysfunction, indicating that latent abnormalities may also exist in the proximal ganglionic intestine. To elucidate possible causes of postoperative bowel dysfunction in HSCR, we investigated differences in the proximal ganglionic intestine using an animal model of HSCR (Ednrb-null mice) and validated our findings in tissue from patients with HS

Case Report: Primary intestinal histiocytic sarcoma in a cat.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive tumor in cats, usually presenting in a multicentric or disseminated form, with gastrointestinal involvement mainly reported as part of a metastatic disease. This report describes the first documented case of a primary intestinal HS in an 11-year-old male neutered domestic short-haired cat, presenting with acute gastrointestinal signs. Diagnostic workup included ultrasonography, cytology, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry (IHC), which confirmed a histiocytic origin through Iba-1, CD204 and MHC-II positivity and MUM1, CD117 and Desmin nega

A case of mesenteric lipoma of the small intestine in an adult patient.

INTRODUCTION: Lipomas are the most common benign tumors of adipose tissue, often presenting as slow-growing, painless masses. Although typically harmless, they can occasionally mimic more serious conditions, requiring careful evaluation and differentiation in clinical practice. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report on a 74-year-old man who underwent surgery for an abscess in the right lobe of the liver, gangrenous-perforated acalculous cholecystitis, and a perivesical abscess. During the revision of the abdominal cavity, a dense formation with enlarged lymph nodes was found on the small intestine n

Reversed intestinal malrotation with volvulus in an adult: A case report.

Congenital intestinal malrotation is a rare developmental anomaly of midgut rotation and fixation, with an estimated incidence of 0.2-0.5% in the adult population. Reversed intestinal rotation represents the rarest variant, accounting for approximately 2-4% of all malrotation cases, and is frequently associated with delayed diagnosis due to nonspecific symptoms. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with long-standing gastrointestinal symptoms who presented with subocclusive features. Contrast-enhanced multiphasic computed tomography revealed reversed intestinal malrotation complicated by

Interleukin-25: orchestrating resistance to intestinal helminth infections.

Interleukin-25 (IL-25) has emerged as a central regulator of type 2 immunity at mucosal surfaces. Beyond its classical role as an epithelial alarmin, IL-25 acts as a multifunctional coordinator of epithelial sensing, immune activation, and tissue adaptation during helminth infection. In the intestine, tuft cells detect helminth- and microbiota-derived metabolites and activate a feed-forward circuit with type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s), promoting antiparasitic immunity and barrier protection. Emerging evidence further links IL-25 to neuroimmune communication, epithelial remodeling, tissue

Paradoxical intestinal perforation during treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis.

In managing the complication of tuberculosis (TB), the phenomenon of a paradoxical reaction must be considered when there are worsening existing or new TB lesions after initial positive response to TB medications. This case describes the sudden development of peritonitis in an adult male who was receiving anti-TB drugs for pulmonary TB. Emergent laparotomy revealed abdominal TB with perforated distal ileum and generalised tuberculous deposits over the peritoneum. The perforation site was trimmed and brought out as a loop ileostomy. Histology confirmed the presence of caseating granulomas in th

Isolated jejunal tuberculosis presenting as chronic intestinal obstruction.

Intestinal tuberculosis (TB) most commonly involves the ileo-caecal region. Isolated involvement of the jejunum without concomitant ileo-caecal or colonic disease is exceptionally rare. We report the case of a woman in her early 60s who presented with a 2-year history of postprandial abdominal pain, intermittent constipation, anorexia and weight loss, followed by acute-onset vomiting suggestive of small bowel obstruction. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated a short-segment jejunal stricture with proximal dilatation. Enteroscopy confirmed luminal narrowing. Ileo-colonoscopy showed no ileo-caecal

SMARCA4-Deficient Carcinomas of the Small Intestine: A Systematic Review.

Purpose: SMARCA4-deficient carcinomas are rare, aggressive malignancies characterized by loss of BRG1, a core component of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex. These typically arise in the chest, but recent case reports suggest rare involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the small intestine. This review aims to consolidate the available literature on SMARCA4-deficient carcinomas of the small intestine, highlighting their clinical, histopathological, molecular, and therapeutic features. Design: A systematic review of PubMed was conducted through March 2025 to identify all

Intestinal and mesenteric lymphangitis mimicking arteritis in a cow with paratuberculosis.

Paratuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). MAP is transmitted primarily through ingestion of contaminated feces, milk, or water and establishes persistent infection within intestinal macrophages by evading host immune defenses. Typical lesions include granulomatous enteritis, lymphangitis, and lymphadenitis. Lymphangitis mimicking arteritis has not been reported in bovine paratuberculosis, to our knowledge. Here, we describe a case of paratuberculosis in a 2-y-old Angus cow that was found dead. Gross changes consis

Fabrication of an Anatomically Realistic Intestinal Phantom with Villous Microstructure.

The accurate evaluation of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases such as celiac disease (CeD) relies on the assessment of villous architecture, yet progress in imaging-based diagnostics, particularly video capsule endoscopy (VCE), is constrained by the absence of anatomically realistic and reproducible physical models of the intestinal mucosa. Existing benchtop phantoms typically reproduce gross luminal curvature but fail to capture the sub-millimeter villous microstructure, the optical scattering behavior, and the luminal folding of native mucosa that together shape its endoscopic appearance. We dev

Small intestine melanosis caused by clofazimine: A case report.

RATIONALE: Melanosis coli is a rare condition characterized by abnormal pigmentation of the gastrointestinal mucosa, most commonly involving the colon. Involvement of the small intestine is exceedingly rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. Here, we present a case of small-intestinal melanosis and explore its potential pathogenesis and clinical significance. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old male presented with a 6-month history of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. He had been taking clofazimine (100 mg/d) for pulmonary tuberculosis for 7 months. Notably, his symptoms

Cytochrome P450 Cyp2s1 regulation of the intestinal metabolome and microbiome.

Xenobiotics and environmental factors implicated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Cyp2s1, an orphan member of this family, is highly expressed in the intestine, yet its role remains unclear. Here, we investigated the function of Cyp2s1 in intestinal homeostasis and inflammation by combining untargeted metabolomics, microbiome sequencing, colitis mouse models, and IBD patient biopsies. We observed markedly reduced Cyp2s1 expression in patients with active IBD and in multiple colitis models. Single-cell RNA sequencing identified abundant Cyp2s1 expr

The emerging role of intestinal stem cells in ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disease affecting the colon and rectum. Characterized by recurrent attacks, UC is often resistant to traditional anti-inflammatory therapies, imposing significant physiological, psychological, and economic burdens on patients. In light of these challenges, innovative targeted therapies have become a new expectation for patients with UC. A crucial pathological feature of UC is the impairment of the intestinal mucosal barrier, which underlies aberrant immune responses and inflammation. Intestinal stem cells (ISCs), which differentiate

Greenspace and intestinal diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Greenspace has been reported potential therapeutically beneficial for intestinal diseases, yet the findings remain controversial Current researches demonstrate diversity in the assessment of greenspace and involve broad population groups, with the publication bias remaining a concern. This study offers convincing and reliable evidence supporting the beneficial effects of greenspace exposure on intestinal health, through a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the association between greenspace and intestinal disorders. The Greenspace exposure was primarily assessed using the Normalized

Revolutionizing UC monitoring: The emerging role of intestinal ultrasound.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by alternating periods of disease flare and remission, necessitating precise monitoring to guide therapeutic decisions. Traditionally, endoscopy has served as the cornerstone of disease assessment. However, its invasiveness, cost and limited accessibility have underscored the need for alternative approaches. Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) has emerged as a valuable, non-invasive tool capable of providing real-time information about intestinal inflammation at the bedside. This review explores the evolving role of IUS in U

Descriptions of intestinal worms in European medieval medical texts.

This article investigates medieval medical texts to discover what they have to say about parasites. The principal focus is on intestinal worms found in practica texts written from the 11th to the 15th centuries in Latin in Western Europe. Practica texts deal with illnesses of the human body from head to heel. The chapters on worms occur in discussion of illnesses of the intestines. These practica texts were used in medical education in universities as well as guiding medical practice. Islamicate writings translated from Arabic into Latin influenced western ideas about intestinal worms. Practic…

Protective Effect of Piperine on Indomethacin-Induced Intestinal Damage.

Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely prescribed for the treatment of inflammation and chronic pain. Chronic use of NSAIDs is associated with adverse events and organ damage, especially to the gastric mucosa and small intestine. This study evaluates the protective effect of piperine on indomethacin-induced intestinal damage. Eighteen male Mus musculus mice, aged 6-8 weeks, were used. Intestinal damage was induced with indomethacin (10 mg/mL) and cotreatment with piperine (20 mg/mL), both administered orally. After 14 days, the animals were euthanized. Biochemical serological
