Comparison of landing biomechanics between male and female dancers and athletes, part 2: Influence of fatigue and implications for anterior cruciate ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is strongly linked to an increased risk of injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. Part 1 of this study identified differences in the biomechanics of landing from a jump between dancers and team athletes, particularly female athletes, which may explain the epidemiological differences in ACL injuries between dancers and team athletes and the lack of a sex disparity within dancers. However, it is not known if these biomechanical variables change differently between team athletes and dancers in the face of fatigue. PURPOSE/ HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of thi

Protracted exercise without overt neuromuscular fatigue influences cortical excitability.

The authors' aim was to determine the cortical mechanisms that underlie the transition from effective performance to its disruption. They thus used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study changes of corticospinal excitability after a motor exercise that did not produce overt or perceived neuromuscular fatigue. Forty-four subjects performed either 5 or 10 min of repetitive finger movements paced by tones at 2 Hz, a frequency below the spontaneous movement rate. Changes of corticospinal excitability were assessed with TMS at rest and during motor response preparation (premovement facili

Hypereosinophilic syndrome: progression of peripheral neuropathy despite controlled eosinophil levels.

Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a disorder of the hematopoietic system, characterized by persistent elevation in the total eosinophil count (> 1500/microliter) for over 6 months, associated with organ damage and no detectable underlying cause. Treatment is centered on the reduction of total circulating eosinophils, which generally leads to remission of symptoms. We report a 68-year-old female patient with HES and peripheral neuropathy, presenting with cutaneous lesions, mental changes, cardiac and pulmonary symptoms, followed by right foot drop and eventually paraparesis, which

Impact of Fatiguing Exercises on Movement Strategies in Chronic Ankle Instability, Lateral Ankle Sprain Copers, and Controls.

While research exists to induce fatigue using isokinetic dynamometers or simple repetition tasks in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI), there is a lack of research examining landing movement strategies using fatigue protocols that mimic actual sports. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of CAI and fatiguing exercises on the lower-extremity kinematics and kinetics during single-leg drop landings among patients with CAI, lateral ankle sprain (LAS) copers and controls. A cross-sectional study recruited 20 patients with CAI, 20 LAS copers, and 20 controls in a biomechanics la

Does exercise intensity affect wellness scores in a dose-like fashion?

Wellness questionnaires are common in monitoring systems, yet the sensitivity to variations in acute training intensity is unclear. This study examined the controlled dosage effects of differing exercise intensities on wellness variables and subsequent associations with neuromuscular performance. Participants (n = 10) completed low-, moderate- and high-intensity conditions of a 90 min simulated football match shuttle running protocol scaled relative to beep test scores. The protocols were completed in a randomised and counterbalanced fashion matched for time of day. Wellness (sleep quality, re

Physiological and psychological effects of testosterone during severe energy deficit and recovery: A study protocol for a randomized, placebo-controlled trial for Optimizing Performance for Soldiers (OPS).

BACKGROUND: The physiological consequences of severe energy deficit include hypogonadism and the loss of fat-free mass. Prolonged energy deficit also impacts physical performance, mood, attentiveness, and decision-making capabilities. This study will determine whether maintaining a eugonadal state during severe, sustained energy deficit attenuates physiological decrements and maintains mental performance. This study will also assess the effects of normalizing testosterone levels during severe energy deficit and recovery on gut health and appetite regulation. METHODS: Fifty physically active m

Physical exercise and burnout facets predict injuries in a population-based sample of French career firefighters.

Although firefighting is known to engender a high rate of injury, few studies have examined the contribution of physical exercise, burnout and coping strategies to firefighting-related injuries. Data were collected from a population-based sample of 220 male firefighters. In a descriptive study, the nature and site of the injuries and the relationships among firefighter injuries, physical exercise, burnout and coping strategies were examined. Sprains were the most prevalent type of injury (98%), followed by tendinitis (40%) and muscle tears (30%). More than two thirds of these injuries were loc

[Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, disability and oral health in a community-dwelling elderly population].

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is involved in important activities of the stomatognathic system for nutrition, such as chewing or swallowing. If the physiological tolerance of its components is exceeded, it can trigger symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). OBJECTIVES: To assess and relate the symptoms of TMD, functional limitations and estimates of self-perceived oral health and general geriatric population in a communitydwelling elderly population. METHODS: An observational study was performed. Ninetyfour persons belonging to units of Granada Geriatric Da

Changes in the functional MR signal in motor and non-motor areas during intermittent fatiguing hand exercise.

The aim of this study was to determine whether there were significant changes in the time course of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal in motor and non-motor regions of both cerebral hemispheres during a unilateral fatiguing exercise of the hand. Twelve subjects performed a submaximal (30%) intermittent fatiguing handgrip exercise (3 s grip, 2 s release, left hand) for approximately 9 min during fMRI scanning. Regression analysis was used to measure changes in fMRI signal from primary sensorimotor cortex (SM1), premotor cortex and visual cortex (V1) in both hemispheres. Fo

Assessment and management of dyspnoea.

The terms 'dyspnoea' or 'breathlessness' refer to an individual's subjective awareness of discomfort related to the act of breathing. Elevations in CO2 above normal levels have been shown to cause breathlessness although it is unlikely to be the sole cause of breathlessness in a clinical setting. Several studies suggest that supplemental O2 during exercise will diminish the sensation of breathlessness although not all work has confirmed this finding. Much about the role of gas exchange in dyspnogenesis remains controversial. Phrenic blockade can abolish dyspnoea in response to breath-holding,

Effect of deep oscillation as a recovery method after fatiguing soccer training: A randomized cross-over study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In soccer the recovery time between matches is often not long enough for complete restoration. Insufficient recovery can result in reduced performance and a higher risk of injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of Deep Oscillation (DO) as a recovery method. METHODS: In a randomized crossover study including 8 male soccer players (22 ± 3.3 years) the following parameters were evaluated directly before and 48 h after a fatiguing soccer-specific exercise: Maximum isokinetic strength of the leg and hip extensors and flexors (Con-Trex® Leg Press, Ph

Telehealth-Based Music Therapy Versus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety in Cancer Survivors: Rationale and Protocol for a Comparative Effectiveness Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors represent one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. Unfortunately, nearly 1 in 3 survivors experience anxiety symptoms as a long-term consequence of cancer and its treatment. Characterized by restlessness, muscle tension, and worry, anxiety worsens the quality of life; impairs daily functioning; and is associated with poor sleep, depressed mood, and fatigue. Although pharmacological treatment options are available, polypharmacy has become a growing concern for cancer survivors. Music therapy (MT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are evidenc

Corticospinal excitability is associated with hypocapnia but not changes in cerebral blood flow.

KEY POINTS: Reductions in cerebral blood flow (CBF) may be implicated in the development of neuromuscular fatigue; however, the contribution from hypocapnic-induced reductions (i.e. P ETC O2) in CBF versus reductions in CBF per se has yet to be isolated. We assessed neuromuscular function while using indomethacin to selectively reduce CBF without changes in P ETC O2 and controlled hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia to reduce both CBF and P ETC O2. Increased corticospinal excitability appears to be exclusive to reductions in P ETC O2 but not reductions in CBF, whereas sub-optimal voluntary out
