A recent analysis of a group of patients with central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) disclosed that a rapid rise in serum sodium from a hyponatremic baseline preceded the clinical onset of the disorder. With the use of peripheral and pulmonary arterial catheters, the peripartum hemodynamic patterns of 10 patients with severe preeclampsia were studied. At the time of line placement, our results demonstrated elevated cardiac outputs (9.3 +/- 1.3 L/min), high systemic vascular resistances (1,042 +/- 160 dynes . sec . cm-5), and hyperdynamic ventricular function. Eight patients had acute leukemia and arthritis. In five the arthritis had no evident cause other than the leukemia, and three had crystal-induced arthritis. Effusions from both groups of patients were often inflammatory. The average synovial fluid leukocyte count from the five effusions attributed to leukemia was 8,790/cu mm. A synovial needle biopsy specimen from one of these patients showed acute and chronic inflammation but no leukemic infiltration. Bone involvement was suggested by bone pain in only one patient. In no case did arthritis persist in the presence of a hematologic remission.

The clinical pharmacological, and neuroradiological observations in six patients with spontaneous blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia (Meige's) syndrome are recorded. Forty patients with advanced Menière's disease were operated upon by vestibular or eighth nerve neurectomy. The biopsied nerve specimens were studed by light and electron microscopy. Round areas containing no or very few axons and bundles of proliferated processes of fibrous astrocytes were found in six cases. A combination of clinical and histopathologic findings suggests that some patients with symptoms identical to Menière's disease might have a primary neuronal disease leading to nonspecific reparative response by fibrous astrocytes.

The paper describes observations made on 32 chimpanzees experimentally infected with Onchocerca volvulus. The mean pre-patent intervals for the Cameroon forest and the Guatemalan strains of O. volvulus were 13-16 months and 12-15 months respectively. Sparganosis is an infection, usually of subcutaneous tissues, caused by the larva of a tapeworm of the genus Spirometra. Approximately 55 cases have been reported in this country, almost exclusively from the Southeastern states. We report an additional ten cases, all of which presented as a single subcutaneous mass.
