Recentering environmental context in the conceptualization of borderline personality disorder among sexual and gender minority individuals.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) prevalence is higher among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals compared with cisgender heterosexuals; SGM individuals are additionally diagnosed with BPD more frequently in clinical settings. There appears to be a small effect of clinician bias-particularly for gender minority individuals. However, it does not fully explain this observed psychiatric disparity. In the current article, we review the historical origins of the BPD diagnosis as well as the present-day conceptualization of the disorder. The theory, research, and treatment of BPD overwhe…

Burnout between personality traits and bowel disorders. An exploratory study of a sample of nurses students.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a complex psychosocial syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, with significant implications for both mental and physical health. Nursing students appear particularly vulnerable to burnout, which can be associated with somatic symptoms, including gastrointestinal disturbances. Despite existing evidence suggesting correlations between burnout and physical disorders, the interplay between burnout, personality traits, and somatization remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relati…

Beyond Self-Reports: Integrating Cortisol Measurement in Psychotherapy Process Research among Adolescents with Borderline Personality Pathology.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Psychotherapy is the primary treatment for adolescent borderline personality pathology (BPP), yet its mechanisms remain unclear. Given potential self-report biases due to alexithymia and impaired interoception, this study examined cortisol responses as a physiological stress marker alongside session ratings from adolescent BPP patients and their therapists to assess its potential as a complementary measure in psychotherapy process research. METHODS: N = 56 adolescents (94.6% female) with BPP (≥3 DSM-IV BPD criteria) receiving Adolescent Identity Treatment or Diale…

Psychotherapeutic Training Intentions Among Psychology Students in Italy: The Role of Empathy, Personality Traits, and Psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: The decision to pursue a career as a psychotherapist may be influenced by various psychological dispositions or self-healing motivations. The current study aimed to investigate differences in empathy, personality traits, and psychopathology between psychology students who intend to pursue psychotherapy training and those who do not. METHOD: The study involved 1978 psychology students (1764 women, 89.2%), aged between 18 and 30 years (M = 22.72, SD = 2.59), who were attending a Bachelor's or a Master's degree program at Italian universities. Each participant completed self-report in…

Decoding personality functioning: the impact of DSM-5 pathological traits mediated by emotion dysregulation and metacognition.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) have long been studied in adulthood, with relatively limited attention to their developmental course during adolescence. Recent research, however, underscores the importance of early identification and intervention in youth, as personality pathology can be reliably detected in this period and is associated with significant functional impairments. Grounded in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), the present study explores potential intrapsychic mechanisms linking maladaptive trait domains to global personality functioning in adole…

Personality functioning in adolescents and its association with health-related quality of life and physical fitness.

Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase marked by major physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that shape self-perception and relationships, with lasting effects on mental and physical health. Personality functioning, a core concept in modern diagnostic systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), offers a dimensional framework that incorporates key developmental domains such as identity, self-direction, empathy, and intimacy. Early detection of impairments in these areas is essential to promote mental and physical well-being and to prevent the onset of m…

Gray and white matter alterations in Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: a data fusion machine learning approach.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is a complex mental condition marked by excessive perfectionism, orderliness, and rigidity, often starting in adolescence or early adulthood; it affects 1.9% to 7.8% of the population. The disorder differs from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in an apparent compromise of personality, distorted self-representation, and altered perception of others. Although the two disorders present evident differences, unlike OCD, the neural bases of OCPD are understudied. The few studies conducted so far have identified gray matter alterations…

[Physical activity in people with borderline personality disorder: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.].

PURPOSE: Treatments for mental disorders, such as pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions, do not always guarantee symptomatic remission. The effectiveness of Physical Activity (PA) in improving the psychophysical health of individuals with various mental disorders is well-established; however, its effects on borderline personality disorder (BPD) have yet to be adequately studied. Currently, there are not approved pharmacological treatments for BPD, and access to effective psychotherapeutic interventions remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a PA programme as an a…

Investigation and analysis of personality characteristics of primary palmar hyperhidrosis patients: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis (PPH) may exhibit distinct personality traits that influence their perception of the condition. These traits can manifest as heightened sensitivity to physical symptoms, as well as feelings of anxiety or depression, especially in social settings. METHODS: This study is a retrospective cross-sectional observational study aimed to evaluate and analyze the personality characteristics of patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis using the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Version 4 (PDQ-4). This study explored the relationships between pe…

Understanding stress regulation in relation to pathological personality traits: The role of Detachment and Negative Affect.

OBJECTIVES: The extent to which the pathological personality traits of Detachment and Negative Affect influence psychophysiological responses to stress is insufficiently explored. This pilot study aimed to investigate how these traits account for variations in perceived stress, and emotional and physiological responses to stress. DESIGN & METHODS: 434 students (87 % female) participated in a cross-sectional study, in which the association between trait levels and perceived stress was assessed. In the laboratory study (N = 76), individual differences in Detachment/Negative Affect on heart rate…

Exploring the Relationship Between Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Haplotype Variants, Personality, and Nicotine Usage in Women.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is associated with nicotine use behaviours, the intensity of nicotine cravings, and the experience of withdrawal symptoms. Given the established influence of sex, brain-derived neurotrophic factor variants, personality traits and anxiety levels on nicotine use, this study aimed to conduct a comprehensive association analysis of these factors within a cohort of women who use nicotine. The study included 239 female participants: 112 cigarette users (mean age = 29.19, SD = 13.18) and 127 never-smokers (mean age = 28.1, SD =10.65). Study participants were e…

Associations Between Mental Disorders, Personality Disorders, and Filicide-Suicide and Parental Suicide: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

AIM: Filicide-suicide represents a critical intersection of psychiatric and familial crises, yet the literature remains scant on differentiated risk profiles among family members. This study addresses a gap in understanding the specific mental health correlates of filicide-suicide, especially within a comprehensive family context, distinct from traditional parental or child-focused perspectives. METHOD: This study used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to identify a nationally representative sample of families from 2004 to 2020, with continuous monitoring extending into 2

Personality Type Shapes Acute Anxiety Response to Music and Medicine Intervention During First Chemotherapy (PEGASUS-2).

Music and medicine interventions are recognised for their effects on emotional regulation and stress reduction. However, limited research exists on how these interventions affect anxiety based on personality types, particularly in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of music and medicine interventions on anxiety levels according to personality types in women with breast cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. In a controlled, cross-sectional case-control study, 120 women were randomly assigned to two groups: an intervention group (music and …

The relationship between overall defensive functioning and the Personality Assessment Inventory borderline and treatment outcome scales.

Mature defense mechanisms support patients' engagement in psychotherapy. The Overall Defensive Functioning (ODF) scale of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) Defensive Functioning Scale (DFS) is a measure of the maturity of patients' defenses. Immature defenses (e.g., splitting) and poor emotion regulation are hallmarks of borderline personality organization, and both can interfere with positive treatment engagement. We predicted that ODF would significantly and negatively correlate with the Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline (PAI-BOR) sc…

Robust inference and widespread genetic correlates from a large-scale genetic association study of human personality.

Personality traits describe stable differences in how individuals think, feel, and behave and how they interact with and experience their social and physical environments. We assemble data from 46 cohorts including 611K-1.14M participants with European-like and African-like genomes for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience), and data from 51K participants for within-family GWAS. We identify 1,257 lead genetic variants associated with personality, including 823 novel vari…

Preconception parental personality disorder and psychosocial outcomes during the perinatal period: a prospective population-based study.

PURPOSE: Birthing individuals with personality disorder in young adulthood before pregnancy may be at increased risk of potentially modifiable adverse outcomes in the perinatal period that impact parental and child health. We aimed to investigate the perinatal psychosocial outcomes of preconception (prior to pregnancy) personality disorder. METHODS: Prospective analysis of 398 birthing individuals with 609 infants from Victorian Intergenerational Health Cohort Study (VIHCS). Preconception personality disorder was measured using the Standardised Assessment of Personality (SAP) at age 24. A ran…

Linguistic Measurement Invariance and Stability-Equivalence of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Among Bilingual Participants.

The linguistic equivalence of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) has never been investigated using a within-subject design, that is, among bilingual individuals. Also, the stability-equivalence of the PID-5 using two linguistic versions is unknown. Thus, this within-subject, test-retest study aims at (a) establishing the measurement invariance of the PID-5 among bilinguals, and (b) providing indices of stability-equivalence using distinct versions with tight confidence intervals. Data from a sample of bilingual participants (N = 605), who were administered the PID-5 over a 1-2-week in…
