Believing is seeing: Changes in visual perception following treatment for height fear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People who are afraid of heights may have a perceptual bias, such that they see heights as higher than they truly are. The current study tested if there is a causal relationship between treatments for height fear and changes in perceptual bias. METHODS: Specifically, the effects on perceptual bias following three height fear interventions (exposure, cognitive bias modification for interpretations, and a combination of exposure and cognitive bias modification) and a control condition were examined in individuals with an extreme fear of heights (N = 107). RESULTS: Re

Steroid phobia, Chinese medicine and asthma control.

BACKGROUND: Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the mainstay of treatment for asthma. Corticosteroid (CS) phobia and fears are prevalent, and these may influence therapeutic efficacy and asthma control. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate if CS fear is associated with asthma control in children. METHODS: Patients aged >4 years with asthma at a pediatric outpatient clinic were surveyed, and the Asthma Control Test (ACT) was used for the assessment of asthma control. RESULTS: Ninety-eight patients and their parents were interviewed. Thirty-four (35%) parents reported moderate or signific

Cogniphobia in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Cogniphobia refers to avoidance of mental exertion out of a fear of developing or exacerbating a headache. Headaches are very common after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and often become chronic. Cogniphobia is hypothesized to contribute to poor cognitive test performance and persistent disability in some patients with mTBI. Eighty patients with mTBI and post-traumatic headaches were recruited from specialty outpatient clinics. They completed a battery of questionnaires (including a cogniphobia scale) and neuropsychological tests (the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognition Battery

Persistence of Specific Phobia From Adolescence to Early Adulthood: Longitudinal Follow-Up of the Mexican Adolescent Mental Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Specific phobia is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in the general population, begins at a younger age, and has high comorbidity. However, it receives less treatment than other disorders, perhaps because it is circumscribed to a specific object or situation that can be avoided or is difficult to differentiate from developmentally adaptive fear. Longitudinal studies are needed to clarify its clinical significance, risk factors, and course. This study was designed to determine the persistence of specific phobia in participants during an 8-year period from adolescence to y

Too little, too much, or just right? Does the amount of distraction make a difference during contamination-related exposure?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The extant literature has shown mixed results regarding the impact of distraction use on exposure outcome; however, a wide variety of distraction tasks have been utilized across studies. In order to better understand these discrepant findings, we aimed to evaluate the impact of differing levels of distraction on exposure outcome. Additionally, treatment acceptability and changes in self-efficacy were assessed to evaluate how these may differ as a function of distraction use. METHODS: In Experiment 1 (N = 176 participants tested), distraction tasks were experimentall

In Vivo versus Augmented Reality Exposure in the Treatment of Small Animal Phobia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Although in vivo exposure is the treatment of choice for specific phobias, some acceptability problems have been associated with it. Virtual Reality exposure has been shown to be as effective as in vivo exposure, and it is widely accepted for the treatment of specific phobias, but only preliminary data are available in the literature about the efficacy of Augmented Reality. The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy and acceptance of two treatment conditions for specific phobias in which the exposure component was applied in different ways: In vivo exposure (N = 31) versus an

Development of a novel remote-controlled and self-contained audiovisual-aided interactive system for immobilizing claustrophobic patients.

In radiotherapy, only a few immobilization systems, such as open-face mask and head mold with a bite plate, are available for claustrophobic patients with a certain degree of discomfort. The purpose of this study was to develop a remote-controlled and self-contained audiovisual (AV)-aided interactive system with the iPad mini with Retina display for intrafractional motion management in brain/H&N (head and neck) radiotherapy for claustrophobic patients. The self-contained, AV-aided interactive system utilized two tablet computers: one for AV-aided interactive guidance for the subject and th

“Don't put me down but don't be too nice to me either”: fear of positive vs. negative evaluation and responses to positive vs. negative social-evaluative films.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The bivalent fear of evaluation (BFOE) model suggests that fears of negative evaluation (FNE) and positive evaluation (FPE) are distinct features in social anxiety disorder as well as in non-clinical variations of social anxiety. The constructs can be measured utilizing the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale – Revised (BFNE-R) and the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale (FPES), respectively. Whereas the distinction between FNE and FPE has been well examined in survey studies, concomitant evidence from laboratory tasks is scarce. METHODS: The present study tested

High social support buffers the effects of 5-HTTLPR genotypes within social anxiety disorder.

An interaction between genetic aspects and environmental stressors has been suggested with regard to the etiology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, potential protective interplays which might decrease the risk of SAD have not been considered so far. Thus, we analyzed the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and differing levels of social support regarding SAD. The sample was based on participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania, Germany. We used the triallelic genotype of 5-HTTLPR and longitudinal data of social support. Final analyses were conducted in 79 individuals with SAD and 1,708 w

Influence of symptom expectancies on stair-climbing performance in chronic fatigue syndrome: effect of study context.

BACKGROUND: In patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), performance of physical activities may be affected by an anticipated increase in symptoms after these activities. Nijs et al. previously studied the influence of symptom expectancies and related psychological processes on the performance of an isolated physical activity [Nijs J, Meeus M, Heins M, Knoop H, Moorkens G, Bleijenberg G. Aberrant reward center response to partner reputation during a social exchange game in generalized social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: Generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD) is characterized by excessive fear of public scrutiny and reticence in social engagement. Previous studies have probed the neural basis of GSAD often using static, noninteractive stimuli (e.g., face photographs) and have identified dysfunction in fear circuitry. We sought to investigate brain-based dysfunction in GSAD during more real-world, dynamic social interactions, focusing on the role of reward-related regions that are implicated in social decision-making. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy individuals (healthy control [HC]) and 36 individu

D-Cycloserine as an augmentation strategy with cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined whether D-cycloserine, a partial agonist at the glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor, augments and accelerates a full course of comprehensive cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in adults with generalized social anxiety disorder. METHOD: This was a multisite randomized placebo-controlled efficacy study with 169 medication-free adults with generalized social anxiety disorder, of whom 144 completed the 12-week treatment and 131 completed the three follow-up assessments. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 50 mg of D-cycloserine or placebo 1 hour befo

Food neophobia and its relation with olfactory ability in common odour identification.

Food neophobia is strictly connected with many different aspects of human feeding, ranging from food preferences to food choice, from active chemosensory exploration of the world (sniffing and tasting) to physiological responses associated with alertness. Therefore in this study, we tested the ability of 167 participants (54 women and 113 men, aged between 20 and 59 years old) to correctly identify 36 common odours, and we verified whether such ability could be related to their level of neophobia toward food and to demographic parameters (i.e., age, gender, and smoking habits). In the analyses

Social anxiety disorder in the Canadian population: exploring gender differences in sociodemographic profile.

The present study examined the prevalence and sociodemographic profile of Canadians with social anxiety disorder using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 1.2 (N = 36,984). Social anxiety disorder was assessed using the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview and sociodemographic variables were explored by gender. Results suggested significant gender differences for prevalence, comorbid depression, marital status, living arrangements, employment status in the past 12 months, and self-reported mental health status. These observations suggest that indivi

Narp knockout mice show normal reactivity to novelty but attenuated recovery from neophobia.

Narp knockout (KO) mice demonstrate cognitive inflexibility and addictive behavior, which are associated with abnormal reactivity to a novel stimulus. To assess reactivity to novelty, we tested Narp KO and wild-type (WT) mice on a neophobia procedure. Both Narp KO and WT mice showed a similar decrease in consumption upon initial exposure to a novel flavor, but Narp KO mice did not increase consumption with subsequent exposures to the novel flavor like the WT mice. Therefore, Narp KO mice do not have abnormal reactivity to novelty but show deficits in adapting behavior to reflect the updated va

Shying away from a good thing: social anxiety in romantic relationships.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether social anxiety covaries with satisfaction, social support, and intimacy in romantic relationships. METHOD: Undergraduates and their romantic partners (N = 163) completed self-report questionnaires. RESULTS: Higher social anxiety in women, but not men, was associated with wanting, receiving, and providing less support, based on self- but not partner-report measures. Women higher in social anxiety also reported being less satisfied in their romantic relationships and self-disclosing less to romantic partners than women lower in social anxiety. Further, self-rep
