More Purpose in Life and Less Novelty Seeking Predict Improvements in Self-Compassion During a Mindfulness-Based Intervention: The EXMIND Study.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, a 4-week mindfulness-based intervention followed by a 4-week existential approach was found to be as effective for increasing self-compassion as an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention. The purpose of the present study was to identify the factors that predicted change in self-compassion during the 8-week mindfulness-based intervention. METHODS: Fifty-seven of the 61 completers of the 8-week mindfulness-based intervention provided baseline, 4-week, and 8-week self-compassion scale scores. The mean age of the 47 females and 10 males was 49.6 years. Pearson's correlation c

Ownership and cognitive connectedness with placebo objects predict pain-related behavorial responses-evidence from two randomized controlled studies.

Placebo analgesia has traditionally been understood to require the active administration of treatment. This study investigated whether cognitive connectedness with an owned placebo analgesic could enhance analgesia even without active application. Two pre-registered randomized controlled experiments were conducted. In Study 1 (N=121), healthy participants were randomized to one of four conditions under explicit verbal suggestions: (1) possessing a placebo cream with induced self-object connection (EXP1), (2) possessing a placebo cream with induced self-object disconnection (EXP2), (3) possessi

Development and validation of a single latent variable self-reported periodontal disease scale based on the disease's common signs and symptoms in Saudi adults.

BACKGROUND: Many studies attempted to evaluate and improve the accuracy of self-reported periodontal disease questionnaire to provide a feasible tool for screening the disease. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a self-reported periodontal disease screening scale (SRPDSS) in Saudi adults and to identify the association of periodontal disease with sociodemographic determinants and oral health behaviors. METHODS: The data was collected digitally from Saudi adults (≥ 18 years) in Riyadh city using a questionnaire that inquired about sociodemographic characteristics, oral health be

The Effect of Different Self-Administered Tongue Exercises on Tongue Strength and Endurance in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Self-administered tongue exercises (TEs) are proposed as an effective, low-cost and convenient intervention for improving maximum tongue strength and endurance. However, age-related factors make self-administered TEs more challenging for older individuals. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of self-administered TEs on maximum tongue strength and endurance in older individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two healthy volunteers, both young and older groups, were randomly allocated to three self-administered TE groups: tongue wrap, tongue corner and tongue paint.

A Preliminary Analysis of Self-Efficacy Relationships With General and Job-Specific Fitness in Law Enforcement Officers.

Lockie, RG, Beitzel, MM, Orr, RM, Dawes, JJ, and Dulla, JM. A Preliminary analysis of self-efficacy relationships with general and job-specific fitness in law enforcement officers. J Strength Cond Res 40(2): e197-e201, 2026-General and job-specific fitness may decline in law enforcement officers during their careers. Exercise self-efficacy (individual's belief in ability to perform exercise) may present as one reason why an officer's fitness declines and could relate to the officer's general and job-specific fitness. Archival data from 60 officers (48 men, 12 women) were analyzed. A 6-item que

Urine collection in cervical cancer screening - analytical comparison of two HPV DNA assays.

BACKGROUND: To reach non-participants, reluctant to undergo clinician-based cervical cancer screening and vaginal self-sampling, urine collection for high-risk human papillomavirus detection (hrHPV) may be valuable. Using two hrHPV DNA assays, we evaluated the concordance of hrHPV positivity in urine samples in comparison with vaginal self-samples and cervical cytology samples taken by the general practitioner (GP). We also studied women's acceptance of urine collection and preferences towards the different sampling procedures. METHODS: One hundred fifty paired self-collected urine and vagina

Role of self-efficacy and social support in short-term recovery after total hip replacement: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the overall success of total hip replacement (THR) in patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA), up to one-quarter of patients report suboptimal recovery. The aim of this study was to determine whether social support and general self-efficacy predict variability in short-term recovery in a Norwegian cohort. METHODS: We performed secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter study of 223 patients who underwent THR for OA in 2003-2004. The total score of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) at 3 months after surgery was used as the

Longitudinal construct validity and responsiveness of measures of walking capacity in individuals with lumbar spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Walking capacity is a primary outcome indicator for individuals with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Therefore, there is a demand for psychometrically sound measures of walking that are responsive to change. PURPOSE: The primary objective of this study was to examine longitudinal construct validity of the Physical Function Scale of the Swiss Spinal Stenosis Questionnaire (PF Scale), the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the walking capacity items from these scales specifically for the assessment of walking capacity in LSS using the objective Self-Paced Walking Test (SPWT)

Abuse liability and stimulant properties of dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine combinations in rats.

RATIONALE: The abuse of over-the-counter (OTC) medications has been widely reported. However, there are few preclinical studies examining the behavioral effects of OTC medications at higher, abused doses. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the current study were to determine whether the anti-histamine diphenhydramine (DIP) and the antitussive dextromethorphan (DEX), either alone or in combination, would have stimulant properties and be self-administered in animals. METHODS: For drug self-administration, naive rats with no history of exposure to other drugs were trained to self-administer i.v. DEX

[Link between depression and academic self-esteem in gifted children].

INTRODUCTION: Studies of the psychology of gifted children frequently refer to their relatively immature affective development in terms of their intellectual capacities and the relational difficulties they experience with regard to their peers, teachers, close acquaintances and sometimes their parents. From a psychopathological viewpoint, various types of problem have been observed such as depressive symptoms, motor instability coupled with hyperactivity, attentional deficits, impulsivity and a fall in self-esteem. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we wished to verify the links between self-esteem an

Comparative Effectiveness of a Web-Based Patient Decision Aid for Therapeutic Options for Sickle Cell Disease: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxyurea, chronic blood transfusions, and bone marrow transplantation are efficacious, disease-modifying therapies for sickle cell disease but involve complex risk-benefit trade-offs and decisional dilemma compounded by the lack of comparative studies. A patient decision aid can inform patients about their treatment options, the associated risks and benefits, help them clarify their values, and allow them to participate in medical decision making. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop a literacy-sensitive Web-based patient decision aid based on the Ottawa decisi

When fitness testing becomes personal: achievement emotions and participation orientations in compulsory university physical education.

Fitness testing can support learning when pedagogically embedded, but public, graded enactment can expose students' bodies to comparison and judgement. Prior research documents negative experiences but does not explain why similar instances of low performance are interpreted as repairable, personally diminishing, or procedurally unfair. Guided by control-value theory and informed by attribution and self-conscious emotion research, this cross-sectional qualitative critical-incident study examined accounts from 30 undergraduates at three public universities in one western Chinese city. Cross-sectional independent associations of anxiety and depressive symptoms with cardiopulmonary exercise performance in treatment-naïve chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is often accompanied by anxiety and depressive symptoms, but their associations with objectively measured cardiopulmonary function in treatment-naïve patients remain unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the independent associations of anxiety and depressive symptoms with cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) variables in newly diagnosed, untreated CTEPH patients. METHODS: We enrolled 236 newly diagnosed, untreated CTEPH patients. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Self-Rating Anxiety Sc

Leptospirosis on the edge: a case report of critical multi-organ involvement.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira species, commonly transmitted through direct or indirect contact with contaminated water, soil, or animal urine. Although typically a self-limiting illness, severe forms of leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) can lead to multi-organ dysfunction, including hepatic and renal failure, hemorrhagic manifestations, and altered mental status. This case report describes a 52-year-old male who presented with severe jaundice, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and multi-organ dysfunction, including acute kidney injury, liver failure, and thrombocyto
