The perceived social rejection of sexual minorities: Substance use and unprotected sexual intercourse.

INTRODUCTION: This study presents associations between the perceived social rejection of sexual minorities and tobacco, alcohol and cannabis consumption and unprotected sexual intercourse in the capital of Greece, Athens. This is the first Greek study to evaluate the concept of the minority stress theory on sexual minorities' substance use and unprotected sexual intercourse. In addition, this is among the first international studies to examine whether periods of adverse economic conditions are associated with sexual minorities' substance use and unprotected sexual intercourse. METHODS: Two-pa

Substance Use and Treatment Outcome among People Living With HIV [PLWHIV] Accessing Care at CIDC 161 NAF Hospital, Makurdi, Nigeria: Implication for Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use is an increasing menace in Nigeria. It is common and even higher among PLWHIV compared to the general population. Substance use increases a person's chance of acquiring HIV due to increased risky behaviours. Gap exists on our understanding of why some clients fail on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) adherence or appointment. Exploring psychoactive substance use among people living with HIV (PLWHIV) and their effect on treatment outcome may help in addressing these problems. METHODS: The study was at Military Hospital in Makurdi, Benue state, Nigeria. It involved 700 HI

Role of Autophagy in HIV-1 and Drug Abuse-Mediated Neuroinflammaging.

Chronic low-grade inflammation remains an essential feature of HIV-1 infection under combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) and contributes to the accelerated cognitive defects and aging in HIV-1 infected populations, indicating cART limitations in suppressing viremia. Interestingly, ~50% of the HIV-1 infected population on cART that develops cognitive defects is complicated by drug abuse, involving the activation of cells in the central nervous system (CNS) and neurotoxin release, altogether leading to neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation is the hallmark feature of many neurodegenerative diso

A Latent Class Approach to Understanding Associations between Sports Participation, Substance Use, Dismissive Attitudes, and Sexual Violence Perpetration among High School Athletes.

Sexual violence (SV) among adolescents continues to be a major public health concern with numerous consequences. Research, predominantly with male collegiate samples, has suggested an association between sports participation and SV perpetration, and has included other important risk factors such as substance use and attitudes. However, more research is needed in this area among adolescents. The current study uses latent class analysis (LCA) to examine data- driven classes of high school student athletes (N = 665) engaged in three risk factor areas for SV: sport contact level, likelihood of sub

Black girls and referrals: racial and gender disparities in self-reported referral to substance use disorder assessment among justice-involved children.

BACKGROUND: There is a higher prevalence of substance use disorder (SUD) among justice-involved children (JIC). It is critical to ensure that JIC who report current use are referred for SUD assessment and potentially life-saving treatment services. Prior research suggests that certain minoritized groups may be less likely to have ever been referred for screening, and research on intersectionality suggests that these disparities may be exacerbated for racially minoritized females. METHODS: Multivariate logistic regression and interaction effects were employed to analyze longitudinal data from

Local Ties, Trans-Local Ties, and Substance Use among Rural-to-Urban Migrants in China.

China has witnessed unprecedented rural-to-urban migration since the early 1980s. While trying to assimilate into the city, rural-to-urban migrants still maintain close ties with their home communities. This study examines how local ties and trans-local ties of rural-to-urban migrants affect their alcohol and tobacco use. Data were obtained from the 2016 and 2018 China Labor-force Dynamics Survey, a nationally representative sample of adults aged over 15 in 29 provinces in China. Participants included 1426 rural-to-urban migrant workers and 6438 urban residents in China. We found that compared

Patient experiences with tobacco use during substance use disorder treatment and early recovery: a mixed method analysis of phone interview responses.

Tobacco use and related mortality remain disproportionately high among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). Though engagement in tobacco cessation interventions is associated with improved long-term recovery, many individuals in SUD treatment do not participate. The goal of the present study was to better understand patient views regarding tobacco use/cessation during residential SUD treatment, in order to decrease barriers for this vulnerable population. This study utilized a cross-sectional design and mixed methods analysis. Following discharge from residential SUD treatment, ind

Detection of vaping, cannabis use, and hazardous prescription opioid use among adolescents.

There has been a global surge in adolescents' use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (vaping), cannabis (vaped and edible), and prescription opioids, collectively termed ECPO. The nature of ECPO use can make it difficult to detect due to few obvious immediate physical and behavioural signs, as well as subtle long-term effects that allow adolescents to transition from initial exploration into hazardous ECPO use without easy detection by care providers. Here, we address the nature of the presentation of ECPO use in adolescents (roughly age 13-18 years), including challenges in detecting use

The association of chronic pain and opioid withdrawal in men and women with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2.7 million individuals in the United States had an opioid use disorder (OUD) in 2020. Chronic pain may exacerbate opioid withdrawal severity, yet most research on opioid withdrawal has not collected data on chronic pain status. Moreover, there is limited evidence that women tend to experience greater opioid withdrawal severity than men, but large, confirmatory studies on this topic have not been published. The goal of this study was to examine the roles of chronic pain and gender on opioid withdrawal severity using a large, multi-site database. METHODS: Data were co

Estimating the Prevalence of Substance Use Disorders in the US Using the Benchmark Multiplier Method.

IMPORTANCE: Prevalence estimates of substance use disorders in the US rely on general population surveys. However, major population groups, such as homeless individuals and institutionalized individuals, are not captured by these surveys, and participants may underreport substance use. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of substance use disorders in the US. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The benchmark multiplier method was used to estimate the prevalence of alcohol, cannabis, opioid, and stimulant use disorders based on data from the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System

Patterns and contexts of polysubstance use among young and older adults who are involved in the criminal legal system and use opioids: A mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid prevention and treatment programs tailored to young adults involved in the criminal legal system are rare. We examined profiles of polysubstance use among younger and older adults involved in the criminal legal system who use opioids, and explored their experiences and motivations related to substance use. Information gleaned can inform the adaptation of existing programs and the development of novel approaches for young adults in the criminal legal system. METHODS: Using a sequential mixed methods design we 1) quantitatively identified typologies of polysubstance users a

Racial and ethnic differences in behavioral health, criminal legal system involvement, and service needs among mental health court participants: Implications for service delivery.

Mental Health Courts (MHCs), an alternative to incarceration, aim to address behavioral health, social needs, and criminal recidivism and serve many adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder (COD). Despite the growth in MHCs, little research has examined ethnic/racial differences in behavioral health and service needs of individuals with COD. This study used data from behavioral health and social assessments administered to 146 adults with COD entering a Massachusetts MHC. Multivariate linear and logistic regression controlling for key demographics tested differences be

Impact of smoking bans and other smoking cessation interventions in prisons, mental health and substance use treatment settings: A systematic review of the evidence.

ISSUES: We conducted a systematic review to examine whether smoking bans alone are effective in achieving smoking cessation in people released from prison, and patients discharged from mental health or substance use settings. APPROACH: We searched health, criminology and social science databases. Detailed search strings were used to combine terms related to smoking bans and cessation interventions in prison, mental health and substance use treatment settings. We used backward and forward snowballing and manual hand searching to find additional studies. Studies were included if they: were publ

Nurse-led intervention to decrease drug use among LTBI positive homeless adults.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are disproportionately diagnosed with active tuberculosis. While promoting latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment has been a call to action, PEH engaging in substance use often experience challenges in completing LTBI treatment. METHODS: In this non-randomized single arm study, we tested an innovative, community-based, nurse-led community health worker (RN-CHW) model, on reducing drug use among 50 PEH, residing in homeless shelters or living on the streets in Los Angeles. Follow-up was at 3- and 6- months. RESULTS: Findings revealed

Evictions and tenant-landlord relationships during the 2020-2021 eviction moratorium in the US.

This study provisionally examined the effects of the US eviction moratorium instituted in response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Three waves of data collected May 2020-April 2021 from a nationally representative sample of middle- and low-income US tenants (n = 3393 in Wave 1, n = 1311 in Wave 2, and 814 in Wave 3) were analyzed. Across three waves, 4.3% of tenants reported experiencing an eviction during the moratorium and 6%-23% of tenants reported delaying paying rent because of the moratorium. Multivariable analyses found that tenants who delayed paying their rent, we

HIV and Substance Use in Latin America: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aims to explore the interplay between substance use (SU) and HIV in Latin America (LA). Database searches yielded 3481 references; 196 were included. HIV prevalence among people who used substances (PWUS) ranged from 2.8-15.2%. SU definitions were variable throughout studies, and thus data were not easily comparable. In 2019, only 2% of new HIV infections were attributed to injection drug use (IDU) in LA. Factors associated with HIV among PWUS included being female, IDU and homelessness, and PWUS were likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors, start antiretroviral treatmen

Factors Associated with Cigarette Smoking in Homeless Adults: Findings From an Outpatient Counseling Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Those who are homeless are 4 times more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general population in the United States. Though research has investigated smoking risk factors among homeless individuals, further investigation is needed to understand factors that can be addressed by smoking cessation programs. This study seeks to understand characteristics associated with cigarette use in clients of the counseling clinic at a Midwest homeless shelter, including whether homeless individuals who smoke demonstrate lower self-efficacy, greater social isolation, poorer perception of therapy,

Validating a brief screening measure for early-onset substance use during adolescence in a diverse, nationwide birth cohort.

The Loeber Risk Score (LRS) was developed to predict early-onset cannabis use in adolescence from late childhood, facilitating early identification. However, the LRS was developed in non-representative historical samples, leaving uncertain its generalizability to children/adolescents across the U.S. today. We externally validated the LRS in a diverse, nationwide cohort (N = 4,898) weighted to the composition of the U.S. Census. Participants in 20 cities completed assessments when youth were approximately 5, 9, and 15 years old. Parents completed the LRS at the age ∼5 and ∼9 interviews. At the

Drug-facilitated sexual assault, impaired trauma memory, and implications for mental health treatment.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault (SA) is a highly prevalent global public health problem and a robust predictor of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use disorder (SUD), and suicidality. A large percentage are drug or alcohol facilitated (DFSA), impairing trauma memory and affecting the application of evidence-based treatments. Despite these problems, few have investigated DFSA-specific mental health (MH) needs. Abuse and misuse of second-generation antipsychotics: An analysis using VigiBase, the World Health Organisation pharmacovigilance database.

The study aim was to assess the abuse/misuse potential of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAPs) using VigiBase data. We extracted individual case safety reports of "Drug abuse, dependence and withdrawal" involving SGAPs up to June 2018. We assessed disproportionate reporting by calculating the information component, considering the lower end of the 95% credibility interval for the information component (IC025 ), and the proportional reporting ratio. We identified 1683 individual case safety reports recorded as "abuse, dependence and withdrawal" involving SGAPs, mainly quetiapine (n = 1089)
