Statistical Learning of Frequent Distractor Locations in Visual Search Involves Regional Signal Suppression in Early Visual Cortex.

Observers can learn locations where salient distractors appear frequently to reduce potential interference-an effect attributed to better suppression of distractors at frequent locations. But how distractor suppression is implemented in the visual cortex and within the frontoparietal attention networks remains unclear. We used fMRI and a regional distractor-location learning paradigm with two types of distractors defined in either the same (orientation) or a different (color) dimension to the target to investigate this issue. fMRI results showed that BOLD signals in early visual cortex were si

Distinct medial-tempora lobe mechanisms of encoding and amygdala-mediated memory reinstatement for disgust and fear.

Current models of episodic memory posit that retrieval involves the reenactment of encoding processes. Recent evidence has shown that this r … ar-related events. Together, these findings shed a new light on the role of the amygdala and medial temporal lobe regions in encoding and reinstatement of specific emotional memories.

Hyperconnectivity between the posterior cingulate and middle frontal and temporal gyrus in depression: Based on functional connectivity meta-analyses.

Disrupted whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the posterior cingulate (PCC) has been highlighted to associate with cognitive and affective dysfunction in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, prior findings showed certain inconsistency about the RSFC of the PCC in MDD. This study aims to investigate the aberrant RSFC of the PCC in MDD using anisotropic effect-size version of seed-based d mapping (AES-SDM). Web of Science and PubMed were searched for studies investigating PCC-based RSFC in MDD. A total of 17 studies, involving 804 patients and 724 healthy controls (H

Loss of efferent projections of the hippocampal formation in the mouse intrahippocampal kainic acid model.

Unilateral intrahippocampal injection of kainic acid is used as a model of medial temporal lobe epilepsy and provides a platform to study the mechanisms of epilepsy. Here, we used an AAV-9 EYFP-tagged viral vector as an anterograde tracer, injected into the dorsal and ventral hippocampus after kainic acid injection, to map out the efferent hippocampal projections after the development of spontaneous seizures in this model. The purpose of the study was to identify the extent of changes in hippocampal efferent system in several brain regions that receive significant inputs from the hippocampus. …

Duration of postictal impaired awareness after bilateral tonic-clonic seizures: EEG and patient characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Ictal and postictal phenomena that may impact the duration of postictal impaired awareness have not been well studied. Postictal … ysfunction impacting postictal awareness. MRI studies show accelerated brain aging in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Our findings suggest that patient age, as a surrogate marker for the lifetime burden of seizures, results in a progressive worsening in time to recovery after BTCS by an increasing negative impact on networks involved in arousal.

Disruption of regional homogeneity in the brains of chronic methamphetamine users.

Previous studies have reported evidence supporting structural and functional alterations in the brains of methamphetamine (MA) users. The aim of the present study was to extend current knowledge regarding brain function(s) in MA users by examining regional homogeneity (ReHo). Chronic MA users (51 male, 46 female), who were undergoing supervised abstinence for 12 to 621 days, and 79 healthy controls (43 male, 36 female) underwent resting-state functional brain magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-wise whole-brain scale group differences in ReHo were examined. The mean ReHo values of significant cl

A separable neural code in monkey IT enables perfect CAPTCHA decoding.

Reading distorted letters is easy for us but so challenging for the machine vision that it is used on websites as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart). How does our brain solve this problem? One solution is to have neurons selective for letter combinations but invariant to distortions. Another is for neurons to encode letter distortions and longer strings to enable separable decoding. Here, we provide evidence for the latter possibility using neural recordings in the monkey inferior temporal (IT) cortex. Neural responses to distorted strings were

Evolution of cross-frequency coupling between endogenous oscillations over the temporal cortex in very premature neonates.

Temporal theta activity in coalescence with slow-wave (TTA-SW) is one of the first neurobiomarkers of the neurodevelopment of perisylvian networks in the electroencephalography (EEG). Dynamic changes in the microstructure and activity within neural networks are reflected in the EEG. Slow oscillation slope can reflect synaptic strength, and cross-frequency coupling (CFC), associated with several putative functions in adults, can reflect neural communication. Here, we investigated the evolution of CFC, in terms of SW theta phase-amplitude coupling (PAC), during the course of very early developme

Task modulates the orthographic and phonological representations in the bilateral ventral Occipitotemporal cortex.

As a key area in word reading, the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex is proposed for abstract orthographic processing, and its middle part has even been labeled as the visual word form area. Because the definition of the VWFA largely varies and the reading task differs across studies, the function of the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex in word reading is continuingly debated on whether this region is specific for orthographic processing or be involved in an interactive framework. By using representational similarity analysis (RSA), this study examined information representation in the

Environmental noise, brain structure, and language development in children.

While excessive noise exposure in childhood has been associated with reduced language ability, few studies have examined potential underlying neurobiological mechanisms that may account for noise-related differences in language skills. In this study, we tested the hypotheses that higher everyday noise exposure would be associated with 1) poorer language skills and 2) differences in language-related cortical structure. A socioeconomically diverse sample of children aged 5-9 (N = 94) completed standardized language assessments. High-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans w

Language systems from lesion-symptom mapping in aphasia: A meta-analysis of voxel-based lesion mapping studies.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is one of the most common causes of post-stroke disabilities. As the symptoms and impact of post-stroke aphasia are heterogeneous, it is important to understand how topographical lesion heterogeneity in patients with aphasia is associated with different domains of language impairments. Here, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of neuroanatomical basis in post-stroke aphasia through coordinate based meta-analysis of voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping studies. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of lesion-symptom mapping studies in post-stroke aphasia. We obtained c

Effective connectivity within the neural system for object-directed action representation during aware and unaware tool processing.

Previous brain functional specialization evidence has shown that both aware and unaware visual processing of manipulable objects activate left premotor, parietal, and posterior temporal cortices, which are thought to constitute object-directed action and object-function processing streams. An open question is whether, both under supraliminal and subliminal processing conditions, there is directional spread of activation along these functional streams, leading to causal inter-regional connectivity effects. In this study, we used Dynamic Causal Modelling to estimate the effective connectivity in

The connectional anatomy of visual mental imagery: evidence from a patient with left occipito-temporal damage.

Most of us can use our "mind's eye" to mentally visualize things that are not in our direct line of sight, an ability known as visual mental … asciculus (AF) passing through the FIN. In both spaces, the ILF connected the FIN with the anterior temporal lobe, and the AF linked it with frontal regions. Our evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that the FIN is a node of a brain network dedicated to voluntary visual mental imagery. The FIN could act as a bridge between visual information and semantic …

The structural brain network topology of episodic memory.

Episodic memory is supported by a distributed network of brain regions, and this complex network of regions does not operate in isolation. To date, neuroscience research in this area has typically focused on the activation levels in specific regions or pairwise connectivity between such regions. However, research has yet to investigate how the complex interactions of structural brain networks influence episodic memory abilities. We applied graph theory methods to diffusion-based anatomical networks in order to examine the structural architecture of the medial temporal lobe needed to support ef…

The relationship between brain neural correlates, self-objectification, and interoceptive sensibility.

Interoceptive sensibility refers to the tendency to focus on internal bodily states and the capacity to detect them. As the subjective dimension of interoception, interoceptive sensibility plays a key role in individuals' health. Self-objectification, a process by which individuals tend to adopt a third-person's perspective of their physical self, leads to decreased interoceptive sensibility. However, few studies regarding the neural basis of interoceptive sensibility and the underlying mechanism of the relationship between self-objectification and interoceptive sensibility have been conducted

A large-scale brain network of species-specific dynamic human body perception.

This ultrahigh field 7 T fMRI study addressed the question of whether there exists a core network of brain areas at the service of different aspects of body perception. Participants viewed naturalistic videos of monkey and human faces, bodies, and objects along with mosaic-scrambled videos for control of low-level features. Independent component analysis (ICA) based network analysis was conducted to find body and species modulations at both the voxel and the network levels. Among the body areas, the highest species selectivity was found in the middle frontal gyrus and amygdala. Two large-scale
