Acoustic nerve in peripheral neuropathy: a BAEP study. Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials.

We performed BAEP study to evaluate acoustic nerve involvement in 102 patients affected by peripheral neuropathies of different etiology, predominantly hereditary and inflammatory acquired neuropathies. Prolonged latency of early waves, indicative of slowing in VIII nerve conduction, was found in a high percentage of cases. Abnormalities were far more frequent (44% vs 14%) and severe in patients with demyelinating rather than axonal neuropathy. Among demyelinating neuropathy, the most severe latency delay was found in Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy type III. The pattern of acoustic ne

Bis-enoxacin inhibits bone resorption and orthodontic tooth movement.

UNLABELLED: Enoxacin inhibits binding between the B-subunit of vacuolar H(+)-ATPase (V-ATPase) and microfilaments, and also between osteoclast formation and bone resorption in vitro. We hypothesized that a bisphosphonate derivative of enoxacin, bis-enoxacin (BE), which was previously studied as a bone-directed antibiotic, might have similar activities. BE shared a number of characteristics with enoxacin: It blocked binding between the recombinant B-subunit and microfilaments and inhibited osteoclastogenesis in cell culture with IC50s of about 10 µM in each case. BE did not alter the relative e

Coronally advanced flap associated with a connective tissue graft for the treatment of multiple recession defects in mandibular posterior teeth.

The coronally advanced flap has been documented as an effective surgical technique for the treatment of gingival recessions in cases of multiple adjacent recession defects, obtaining stable long-term results after 5 years of follow-up. The aim of the present study was to test the coronally advanced flap, in association with a connective tissue graft, in a case series of 10 patients presenting at least two gingival recessions on adjacent teeth in the posterior mandibular area. Periodontal parameters were recorded on teeth involved in the surgeries at baseline and 1 year. A total of 26 recession

Revisiting the hopeless ridge: Part II--Inductive orthopedic allograft applied to dental implant regeneration.

Part I of "Revisiting the Hopeless Ridge" highlighted the higher complication rates, greater resorption profile, and lower implant success rates associated with autogenous block grafts. The conclusions described in that article were based on a comprehensive literature review, rather than an individual clinician's experience in clinical practice. Additionally, the idea that such grafts were the gold standard for traditional dental implant-associated bone regeneration was challenged. This article explores the advantageous properties of new commercially available allograft bone in a variety of cl

Root coverage outcome may be affected by heavy smoking: a 2-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Although subepithelial connective tissue graft (CTG) has been reported to be a predictable procedure for root coverage, the impact of smoking on the long-term outcome of periodontal plastic surgery is unclear. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of smoking, on a long-term basis, on the stability of gingival tissue following CTG treatment of gingival recession. METHODS: Twenty-two defects were treated by CTG in canine and premolar Miller Class I and II gingival recessions (11 smokers and 11 non-smokers). The following clinical measurements were obtained at basel
