The evaluation of the causes of subjective voice disturbances after thyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Voice changes following thyroidectomy is a rare form of morbidity not infrequently encountered. Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve or external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve is the most well-known cause of post-thyroidectomy voice disturbances. However, voice dysfunction is a more complex entity. The aim of the current study was to assess the possible factors that influence voice changes after thyroidectomy. METHODS: Forty-eight consecutive patients who had undergone thyroidectomy were studied. The acoustic voice analysis (mean vocal fundamental frequency [Fo], mean p

Sensorimotor gating in manic and mixed episode bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have examined acoustic startle sensorimotor gating in bipolar disorder (BPD) despite the fact that patients with BPD have exhibited inhibitory dysfunctions on a variety of early information processing tasks. The present study aimed to expand the current literature through the investigation of electromyographic (EMG) measures of acoustic startle prepulse inhibition (PPI) in manic and mixed episode BPD. METHODS: Fourteen manic and 21 mixed episode BPD patients were compared to 32 healthy controls on acoustic startle measures of PPI using a 120-ms lead interval. RESULTS:

Evaluation of voice pathology based on the estimation of vocal fold biomechanical parameters.

Voice disorders are a source of increasing concern as normal voice quality is a social demand for at least one third of the population in developed countries in cases where voice is an essential resource in professional exercise. In addition, the growing exposure to certain pathogenic factors such as smoking, alcohol abuse, air pollution, and acoustic contamination, and other problems such as gastro-esopharyngeal reflux or allergy as well as aging, aggravate voice disorders. Voice pathologies justify the assignment of larger resources to prevention policies, early detection, and less aggressiv

Endolymphatic duct violation during retrosigmoid dissection of the internal auditory canal: a human temporal bone radiographic study.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Successful hearing preservation after acoustic neuroma resection is sometimes complicated by delayed hearing deterioration. The goal of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that internal auditory canal (IAC) drilling during retrosigmoid acoustic neuroma removal may result in endolymphatic duct (ELD) injury, a potential cause of delayed hearing loss (HL) after hearing preservation surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Temporal bone anatomic and radiographic study and literature review. METHODS: Twenty-one human temporal bones were analyzed with high-resolution multislice comput

SPET assessment of auditory cortex stimulation and tonotopic spatial distribution in auditory brainstem implant.

Activation of the auditory cortex by multifrequency acoustic stimuli has been evaluated using Single Photon Emission Tomography in a case of auditory brainstem implant after activation of 6 and 11 electrodes. Before implantation, no activation of the auditory cortex has been observed after acoustic stimulation. Following auditory brainstem implant, the stimulation of 11 electrodes showed an activation value, in terms of blood flow increase, of the contralateral temporal cortex similar to that obtained with 6 electrodes (47.70 vs. 43.76%), but a significantly stronger activation was present in

Tip link loss and recovery on chick short hair cells following intense exposure to sound.

Stereocilia tip links on chick short hair cells (SHCs) were counted in the 'patch' lesion produced by acoustic overstimulation. Tip links were also counted on tall hair cells (THCs) immediately superior to the lesion. Eight groups were studied with three exposed to intense sound for differing durations. Three other groups were allowed to recover from the longest exposure for different time periods. Tip link counts from non-exposed control hair cells came from two other groups. Chicks exposed for 4, 24 or 48 h to a 120-dB SPL 0.9-kHz pure tone showed SHC tip link loss of 30.3, 40.6, and 35.5%,

[The correlation between subjective and objective voice evaluation in organic and functional larynx disorders].

The aim of this research is to develop and introduce into phoniatric diagnostic procedures the complex methodology of vocal function assessment, on the basis of comparison of subjective and objective voice estimation. The set of complex voice evaluation ought to include perceptual examination of the voice quality with quantitative GRBAS scale as a subjective method, vocal folds vibrations in videostroboscopy as a quasi-objective method and acoustic voice estimation in Multi Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP) as an objective method. The basic assumption of this report is to prove correlation exis

Functional reorganization in chinchilla inferior colliculus associated with chronic and acute cochlear damage.

This paper describes some of the unexpected functional changes that occur in the inferior colliculus (IC) following noise- and drug-induced cochlear pathology. A striking example of this is the compensation that is seen in IC responsiveness after drug-induced selective inner hair cell (IHC) loss. Despite a massive reduction in the compound action potential (CAP) caused by partial IHC loss, the evoked potential amplitude from the IC shows little or no reduction. Acoustic trauma, which impairs cochlear sensitivity and tuning, also reduces the CAP amplitude. Despite this reduced neural input, IC

Deciphering auditory processing disorders in children.

APD is not a label for a unitary disease entity but rather a description of functional deficits [3]. It is a complex and heterogeneous group of auditory-specific disorders usually associated with a range of listening and learning deficits [3,4]. Underlying APD is a deficit observed in one or more of the auditory processes responsible for generating the auditory evoked potentials and the following behaviors: around localization and lateralization; auditory discrimination; auditory pattern recognition; temporal aspects of audition, including temporal resolution, masking, integration, and orderin

Central hyperacusis with phonophobia in multiple sclerosis.

Hearing disorders are a well-described symptom in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Unilateral or bilateral hyperacusis or deafness in patients with normal sound audiometry is often attributed to demyelinating lesions in the central auditory pathway. Less known in MS is a central phonophobia, whereby acoustic stimuli provoke unpleasant and painful paresthesia and lead to the corresponding avoidance behaviour. In our comparison collective, patient 1 described acute shooting pain attacks in his right cheek each time set off by the ringing of the telephone. Patient 2 complained of intensifie

Vestibular disorders and impaired path integration along a linear trajectory.

The goal of this study was to determine if people use vestibular information to keep track of their positions while walking through a simple course. Subjects were normals and patients with chronic peripheral vestibulopathies-- each of whom were tested once--and patients with acoustic neuromas tested pre-operatively and one and three weeks post-operatively. Subjects walked over a straight course, 7.62 m, with their eyes open and then with their eyes closed. The time needed for task performance, the forward distance subjects walked before veering, and the lateral distance subjects veered from th

New perspectives in intraoperative facial nerve monitoring with antidromic potentials.

Electromyographic (EMG) activity recorded from the facial muscles in response to electrical and mechanical stimulation is the most popular method for continuous monitoring of the facial nerve during cerebellopontine-angle surgery. EMG recording is, however, extremely sensitive to the administration of neuromuscular blockers. An alternative technique for the continuous monitoring of the facial nerve [i.e., monopolar recording of facial nerve antidromic potentials (FNAPs)], is described. Ten subjects undergoing retrosigmoid vestibular neurectomy for Meniere's disease and 11 subjects operated on

Dynamic information in the identification and discrimination of vowels.

The dynamic theory of vowel perception emphasizes the importance of the consonant transitions in CVC syllables to the identification of the vowel itself. However, the dynamic theory is relatively vague in terms of what perceptual processes may be involved and it says nothing about the role of auditory and/or phonetic memory for such 'dynamic events'. The present study created three synthetic [iota]-[epsilon] continua consisting of a [bVb] full-syllable continuum, a silent-center continuum (which had over 72% of the medial vowel replaced by silence) and an isolated vowel continuum to specifical

[Evaluation of the results of treatment of patients with functional dysphonia using a cepstral test].

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment in patients with functional dysphonia, the Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP) test was used. Twenty dysphonic women aged from 18 to 47 years were under observation. The control group consisted of 20 healthy women of close age. Patients underwent 5-7 sessions electrostimulation of laryngeal muscles and phonopedic treatment, after which a complete restoration of the voice was noted. The Praat clinical program was used, installed on a Hewlett-Packard 630 laptop (Pentium B960, 2.2 GHz). A SHURE SM94 condenser microphone was used as well. In the c

Spatial release from masking in crocodilians.

Ambient noise is a major constraint on acoustic communication in both animals and humans. One mechanism to overcome this problem is Spatial Release from Masking (SRM), the ability to distinguish a target sound signal from masking noise when both sources are spatially separated. SRM is well described in humans but has been poorly explored in animals. Although laboratory tests with trained individuals have suggested that SRM may be a widespread ability in vertebrates, it may play a limited role in natural environments. Here we combine field experiments with investigations in captivity to test wh

Anticipating real-ear insertion response using an external auditory canal model.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the acoustic characteristics of the external auditory canal (EAC) and predict the real-ear aided response (REAR) using an EAC model that includes the standing wave effect. METHODS: The EAC transfer function equations were derived by summing the incoming and outgoing waves. First, we investigated the real-ear unaided gain (REUG). Second, seven patients (eight ears) wearing hearing aids (HAs) were enrolled as subjects to examine the REAR. We conducted wideband tympanometry (WBT) to measure the absorbance, the frequency response at 65 dB (65dB-FR) of the

Optical Access to Dark Excitons Via Spin-Phonon Fano Interference.

Spin-dark excitons in semiconductor nanostructures are inherently optically silent: angular-momentum selection rules forbid their radiative recombination, granting long lifetimes attractive for quantum information storage and excitonic condensation, but placing their energy structure and bright-dark coupling beyond standard optical spectroscopy. Established access routes rely on symmetry-lowering perturbations, dedicated single-emitter device fabrication, or near-field methods, each of which perturbs the states under study or excludes ensembles. Here, we show that a Fano-type quantum interfere

Zero Echo Time Functional MRI in Humans: Technical Demonstration and Proof-of-Concept.

Conventional EPI-based fMRI relies on the BOLD contrast to map activity changes, but is limited by high acoustic noise, susceptibility artifacts, and distortion near air-tissue interfaces. Ultra-short and zero-echo-time (ZTE) sequences have gained considerable attention in animal fMRI studies due to their robustness against susceptibility effects, low acoustic noise, and ability to capture signal sources distinct from those of conventional BOLD imaging. In this study, we present a feasibility-level proof-of-concept technical demonstration of ZTE-based fMRI in humans at 3T, while maintaining ma

High-frequency ultrasound modulates the interfacial Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox transition to enhance glucose electrooxidation and hydrogen production.

Replacing the kinetically limited oxygen evolution reaction with biomass electrooxidation offers a promising route toward energy-efficient hydrogen production, yet the electrooxidation reaction's performance remains hindered by interfacial kinetics and catalyst accessibility. Here, we demonstrate that high-frequency ultrasound acts as a dynamic physical field that drives interfacial chemical activation, enabling enhanced glucose electrooxidation on nickel foam under mild conditions. Under acoustic irradiation, the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox transition undergoes a substantial cathodic shift of approxi
