BackgroundThe impact of psychiatric comorbidities in children and adolescents with headache disorders can be more comprehensively understood through a biopsychosocial perspective, which examines the dynamic interplay of factors beyond headache attacks. Resilience and executive function emerge within this framework, playing a central role in development psychopathology and other critical domains.MethodsThis narrative review aimed to examine the impact of psychiatric comorbidity on migraine and/or high-frequency headaches (HFH) in children and adolescents through a biopsychosocial perspective ce

OBJECTIVES: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) diagnoses in Kenya are based on the identification of characteristic symptoms or syndromes without laboratory testing. Syndromic management likely underestimates STI prevalence due to undiagnosed asymptomatic infection. We assessed the prevalence and factors associated with chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections among adolescent boys and girls participating in Maneno Yetu, a sexual and reproductive health study in Kenya.
METHODS: Adolescents aged 15-19 years residing in informal settlements in Kisumu were eligible to participate in a cross-secti

BACKGROUND: Evidence in adults suggests that exposure to artificial light-at-night (ALAN) leads to obesity. However, little is known about whether this effect exists in children and adolescents. We aimed to investigate whether ALAN exposure was associated with overweight and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents and whether this association varied with socioeconomic status.
METHODS: Data on the height and weight of 129,500 children and adolescents aged 10-18 years from 72 cities were extracted from the 2014 Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health (CNSSCH). The A

Adolescent decisions, especially in novel contexts, are often guided by affective evaluations (i.e., feelings associated with a stimulus) rather than knowledge of the risks and probabilities of different outcomes. In this study, we used the affect-driven exploration (ADE) model to illustrate how affective evaluations can play a critical role in driving early use of cigarettes, as well as the adaptive function of the resulting experiential learning in informing future affect and cigarette use. We analyzed five waves of data collected from a large, diverse community sample of adolescents who wer

BACKGROUND: There are multiple personal and environmental factors that influence the risk of developing running-related injuries (RRIs). However, it is unclear how these key clinical factors differ between adult and adolescent runners.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare anthropometric, training, and self-reported outcomes among adult and adolescent runners with and without lower extremity musculoskeletal RRIs.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Questionnaire responses and clinical assessment data were extracted from 38 adult runners (F: 25, M: 13; median age: 23 [r

To develop satisfactorily, adolescents require good health-related quality of life (QOL, including physical health, psychological health, social relationships and living environment). However, for poorly understood reasons, it is often lacking, especially among immigrants with lower family and socioeconomic resources. This study assessed health-related QOL of European and non-European immigrant adolescents and the contributions of socioeconomic difficulties, unhealthy behaviors, and violence. It included 1,559 middle-school adolescents from north-eastern France (mean age 13.5, SD 1.3; 1,451 Fr

BACKGROUND: In the Swedish society, as in many other societies, many children and adolescents with mental health problems do not receive the help they need. As the Swedish society becomes increasingly multicultural, and as ethnic and economic residential segregation become more pronounced, this study utilises ethnicity and neighbourhood context to examine referral pathways to child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) clinics.
METHODS: The analysis examines four different sources of referrals: family referrals, social/legal agency referrals, school referrals and health/mental health referrals. Th

In everyday behavior, we perform numerous goal-directed manual tasks that contain a sequence of actions. However, knowledge is limited regarding developmental aspects of predictive control mechanisms in such tasks, particularly with regard to brain activations supporting sequential manual actions in children. We investigated these issues in typically developing children at early adolescence (11-14 years) compared with previously collected data from adults. While lying in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, the participants steered a cursor on a computer screen towards sequentially pres

This study examined whether changes in children's self-reported Big Five dimensions are represented by (developmental) personality types, using a cohort-sequential design with three measurement occasions across 5 years (four cohorts, 9-12 years at T1; N = 523). Correlates of, and gender differences in, type membership were examined. Latent class growth modeling yielded three personality types: Resilients (highest initial levels on all Big Five), Overcontrollers (lowest Extraversion, Emotional Stability, Imagination), and Undercontrollers (lowest Benevolence, Conscientiousness). Gender differen

PURPOSE: The current study investigated finiteness marking (e.g., he walk s, he walk ed) in boys with fragile X syndrome (FXS); the boys were grouped based on receptive vocabulary (i.e., borderline, impaired).
METHOD: Twenty-one boys with the full mutation of fragile X, between the ages of 8 and 16 years participated. The boys completed probes from the Test of Early Grammatical Impairment (TEGI; Rice & Wexler, 2001), a language sample, a nonverbal IQ test (Leiter-R; Roid & Miller, 1997), a receptive vocabulary test (the Pearson Picture Vocabulary Test-Fourth Edition [PPVT-IV]; Dunn & Dunn, 20

BACKGROUND: If the adaptive significance of specific fears changes with age, the genetic contribution to individual differences may be lowest at the age of greatest salience. The roles of genes and environment in the developmental-genetic trajectory of five common childhood fears are explored in 1094 like-sex pairs of male and female monozygotic and dizygotic twins assessed on up to three occasions during adolescence (ages 8-18 years).
METHODS: Dichotomous self-ratings of a cluster of five correlated fears from Ollendick's schedule of fears (FSSC-R) were extracted for subjects at each occasio

The pediatric hip undergoes significant changes from infancy through adolescence. Proper maturation is crucial for the development of a stable and functional hip joint. Imaging interpretation of the pediatric hip requires distinguishing normal variants and maturation patterns from pathology. We review femoral ossification centers, variants, and conditions that affect the proximal femur, such as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease; the acetabulum, such as developmental hip dysplasia; the acetabular labrum, such as femoroacetabular impingement; and synovial pathology in children through adolescence. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world. Epidemiological data indi- cate that iron deficiency is more prevalent in infants, in preschool-children, and in adolescents. Etiologies of iron deficiency in children include inadequate dietary iron intake, which is the most common cause, as well as increased iron requirements, bleeding, and intestinal iron absorption disorders. Iron deficiency can lead to symptoms related to anemia, may interfere with neuro- development and may cause skin, hair, nail, and gastrointestinal problems. This review focuses on the causes, signs,

Although most teenagers experience acne, for sexual and gender minority teenagers, acne could be more challenging and require specific psychosocial considerations. Acne may be more strongly associated with mental health issues in sexual and gender minority adolescents. Acne development during puberty may trigger gender dysphoria in transgender patients. Transgender and gender nonbinary patients receiving testosterone therapy may experience new or worsening acne. Comprehensive care for moderate to severe acne in sexual and gender minority adolescents should include culturally competent discussi

An 18-year-old black African man with well-controlled perinatally acquired HIV-1 was diagnosed in late adolescence with the unrelated diagnoses of Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A (CMT1A), epilepsy due to polymicrogyria and subsequently developed severe depression. The CMT1A diagnosis occurred after transfer of care from a local paediatric HIV service to a tertiary paediatric referral centre and was precipitated by recognition of a history and neurological signs not typically associated with perinatal HIV. The case resulted in the establishment of a quarterly combined paediatric HIV and paediatric

This commentary addresses the manner in which executive control processes and their development is impacted by major depressive episodes during adolescence. Strengths of the articles within this special issue include the breadth of executive functions that were examined, incorporation of biological probes to understand neural mechanisms involved in observed impairments, the use of longitudinal paradigms to assess developmental timing, consideration and modeling of comorbid conditions, and the identification of individual difference factors that may serve as both liabilities and resilience fact

The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was employed to study response to social evaluative threat in male adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, n = 21) and typical development (n = 13). Participants wore a mobile electrocardiogram to collect heart rate data. There were significant group effects on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a measure of parasympathetic nervous system function, with lower values in ASD (F = 4.97). Bivariate correlations also showed a significant relationship between parent reports of social problems and RSA response to the TSST (r = -0.586). These findings sugge
