Evaluating spatial and temporal patterns of tick exposure in the United States using community science data submitted through a smartphone application.

Research initiatives that engage the public (i.e., community science or citizen science) increasingly provide insights into tick exposures in the United States. However, these data have important caveats, particularly with respect to reported travel history and tick identification. Here, we assessed whether a smartphone application, The Tick App, provides reliable and novel insights into tick exposures across three domains - travel history, broad spatial and temporal patterns of species-specific encounters, and tick identification. During 2019-2021, we received 11,424 tick encounter submission

Multi-omics analysis revealing the interplay between gut microbiome and the host following opioid use.

Opioid crisis is an ongoing epidemic since the past several decades in the United States. Opioid use-associated microbial dysbiosis is emerging as a key regulator of intestinal homeostasis and behavioral responses to opioid. However, the mechanistic insight into the role of microbial community in modulating host response is unavailable. To uncover the role of opioid-induced dysbiosis in disrupting intestinal homeostasis we utilized whole genome sequencing, untargeted metabolomics, and mRNA sequencing to identify changes in microbiome, metabolome, and host transcriptome respectively. Biological effects of exposure to 2650 MHz electromagnetic radiation on the behavior, learning, and memory of mice.

BACKGROUND: With the development of communication technology, the public is paying increasing attention to whether electromagnetic radiation is harmful to health. Mobile phone communication has entered the 5G era, and there are almost no reports on electromagnetic radiation at 2650 MHz. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the risk of adverse effects of 5G mobile phone EMR exposure on the human brain. METHODS: Male animals were continuously exposed to 2650 MHz-EMR for 28 days with a whole-body averaged specific absorption rate (WBSAR) of 2.06 W/kg for 4 h per day. Mouse behavior was assesse

Microbial Community Structure and Diversity in Drinking Water Supply, Distribution Systems as well as Household Point of Use Sites in Addis Ababa City, Ethiopia.

Understanding ecology of microbiomes in drinking water distribution systems is the most important notion in delivering safe drinking water. Drinking water distribution systems harbor various microbiota despite efforts made in improving water infrastructures in the water industry, especially, in developing countries. Intermittent water supply, long time of water storage, low water pressure, and contaminated source water are among many of the factors responsible for poor drinking water quality affecting health of people. The aim of this study was to explore microbial diversity and structure in w

PacBio and Illumina MiSeq Amplicon Sequencing Confirm Full Recovery of the Bacterial Community After Subacute Ruminal Acidosis Challenge in the RUSITEC System.

The impact of subacute rumen acidosis (SARA) on the rumen bacterial community has been frequently studied in in vivo trials. Here we investigated whether these alterations can be mirrored by using the rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC) as an in vitro model for this disease. We hypothezised that the bacterial community fully recovers after a subacute ruminal acidosis challenge. We combined a PacBio nearly full-length 16S rRNA gene analysis with 16S rRNA gene Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region. With this hybrid approach, we aimed to get an increased taxonomic resolution o

Disparity in the nasopharyngeal microbiota between healthy cattle on feed, at entry processing and with respiratory disease.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is one of the most serious causes of health and economic problems in the beef production industry, especially in recently weaned, intensely raised and newly transported feedlot cattle. While the importance of upper airway structure and function in the susceptibility of the lower respiratory tract to colonization with potential pathogens is well established, the role of the mucosal microbiota in respirtatory health is less well defined. The objective of this study was to characterize the nasopharyngeal microbiota of feedlot cattle at entry into a commercial feed

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Acinetobacter spp. isolated from meat.

The prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Acinetobacter spp. from fifty samples of meat (chicken, turkey, beef and pork) were evaluated. Acinetobacter spp. was recovered from all samples and the clonal relatedness of 223 isolates identified to belong to the genus Acinetobacter was established by PFGE. A high genetic diversity was observed and 166 isolates from different samples, 141 representing different PFGE profiles, were further identified to the species level by rpoB gene sequencing. Thirteen distinct Acinetobacter species were identified among 156 isolates. The remaining ten isolates m

Cell-to-cell communication--periodontal regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Although regenerative treatment options are available, periodontal regeneration is still regarded as insufficient and unpredictable. AIM: This review article provides scientific background information on the animated 3D film Cell-to-Cell Communication - Periodontal Regeneration. RESULTS: Periodontal regeneration is understood as a recapitulation of embryonic mechanisms. Therefore, a thorough understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating normal tooth root development is imperative to improve existing and develop new periodontal regenerative therapies. However, comp

Insights from the conduct of a device trial in older persons: low magnitude mechanical stimulation for musculoskeletal health.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a common complication of aging. Alternatives to pharmacologic treatment are needed for older adults. Nonpharmacologic treatment with low magnitude, high frequency mechanical stimulation has been shown to prevent bone loss in animal and human studies. METHODS: The VIBES (Vibration to Improve Bone Density in Elderly Subjects) study is a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial of the efficacy of low magnitude, high frequency mechanical stimulation in 200 men and women aged 60 years and older with bone mineral density T-scores by dual X-ray absorptiometry betwe

Breastfeeding and growth in rural Kenyan toddlers.

Research has not provided unequivocal support for the recommendation to continue breastfeeding until children reach at least age 24 months. In many circumstances, breastfeeding duration is chosen or conditioned by factors other than scientific evidence and recommendations. Even in communities where breastfeeding into the second year is the norm, a significant number of toddlers are weaned before the recommended age. The research reported here was conducted in a rural community of western Kenya. We prospectively followed a cohort of 264 children for 6 months (mean age at baseline, 14.1 +/- 2.4

Integrating Indigenous knowledge and modern statistical approaches to model wildlife density based on animal track counts.

In multiuse areas outside formal protection, sustaining both wildlife and people is critical to wildlife conservation and coexistence efforts. Botswana's Kalahari hosts one of sub-Saharan Africa's largest unprotected areas supporting free-ranging wildlife. The role of multiuse areas as a wildlife habitat and movement corridor is increasingly threatened by land-use change, particularly the expansion of sedentary livestock farming. In light of these changes, updated information on wildlife status and their use of these areas is lacking. Leveraging the Kalahari's sandy substrate and Indigenous tr

Synchronous Activity in the Auditory Forebrain Represents Temporal Landmarks in Vocal Communication Signals.

Precise temporal segmentation of sound is critical for identifying and interpreting complex acoustic signals such as human speech (Pisoni and Luce, 1987) and bird song (Gentner, 2008). Using the zebra finch model system, we investigated the neural coding of the songs' temporal features. We recorded neural activity from avian primary and secondary auditory cortex-like brain areas using electrode arrays in awake birds (4 males and 3 females) exposed to conspecific songs. By applying a deep-learning approach with bidirectional long-short-term memory networks (Daly, 2023), we demonstrate that not

Practices and perspectives on antimicrobial drug misuse in Southern Ethiopia: a mixed-method study, 2024.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance refers to the ability of microorganisms to become resistant to antibiotics, fungicides, and other antimicrobial agents, which are essential for treating illnesses in humans, land and water-based animals, and plants. This issue is quickly emerging as a major danger to health, economic stability, and livelihoods. One notable driver of these resistant microorganisms is the misuse of antimicrobial medications. OBJECTIVE: To assess the practices and perspectives on antimicrobial drug misuse in Wolaita Zone, 2024. METHODS: This study employed a community-based

Dietary inclusion of Asparagopsis taxiformis significantly reduces methane emissions in dairy cows by mechanistically altering vitamin B12-dependent and other methanogenesis precursor pathways.

BACKGROUND: Ruminant products are widely consumed due to their high protein and micronutrient content, but ruminant production contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, with methane (CH₄) accounting for 33% of anthropogenic emissions. CH₄ is generated via fermentative processes by the rumen microbiome, primarily through hydrogen utilisation by methanogenic archaea. Feeding beef cattle the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis (ASP) has been shown to reduce CH₄ emissions by up to 80%. However, the microbial mechanisms underlying this reduction remain poorly understood. In this study,

Within-species phenotypic resistance rather than community turnover tracks antimicrobial usage in Staphylococcus aureus on swine farms.

Bioaerosol-mediated transfer of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria from swine farms to workers represents a poorly quantified occupational hazard. Whether farm-level antimicrobial usage track resistance through community-level taxonomic turnover or through within-species phenotypic differences remains unclear. Existing occupational risk assessments also lack phenotypic resistance resolution and corrections for microbial viability. Here, we performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing of 962 isolates across six species from six Korean swine farms stratified by defined daily dose for animals (DD

Assessing mpox knowledge and sexual behaviours within high-risk populations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Historically, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has faced the greatest public health burden from mpox, including more than 70,000 probable cases from 01 January 2024 to 02 February 2025. However, there has been a relative paucity of investigation focused on mpox community engagement in DRC, including assessments of disease knowledge and risk perception. METHODS: Given the ongoing Clade I mpox public health emergency of international concern, and the linkage between sustained human-to-human transmission and dense sexual networks, we sought to investigate mpox knowledge and
