Effect of 6-Shogaol Derived from Ginger (Zingiber officinale) on Dual-Species Biofilm Formation by Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dental plaque, a biofilm composed of accumulated oral microorganisms, is a key contributor to various oral diseases. … A) disks for 42 h and exposed to 6-shogaol. The pH was measured in the experimental medium, and the biomass, colony-forming unit (CFU) of microbial cells, and insoluble extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) were quantified in the biofilm formed on the HA disk. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to assess biofilm morphology, and quantitative …

Relationship Between Species Diversity and Community Stability of Vegetation Patches in Thymus mongolicus Steppe, China.

Grassland ecosystems play a crucial role in sustaining the stability of global ecosystem functions. However, the plant communities of grassl … hes dominated by grasses exhibited the highest values in coverage, height, density, and aboveground biomass. Besides, species diversity indices were highest in Achnatherum splendens patches and Festuca litvinovii patches, followed by Thymus mongolicus communities and Leymus chinensis patches, while the lowest diversity indices were observed in Artemisia f …

Fabrication of high-strength and antifungal densified bamboo through cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin regulation combined with structural reorganization and functional modification.

Bamboo, as a sustainable biomass material, is distinguished by its high cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content, making it a promising candidate for structural and decorative applications. In this study, bamboo was modified through in situ silanization and hydrothermal synthesis of titanium dioxide (TiO₂), coupled with adjustments in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content, followed by densification at varying compression ratios to enhance its mold resistance and mechanical properties. The densification process increased the density of vascular bundles, parenchyma cells, and fiber bu…

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is currently defined as a progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with a histop … dly been demonstrated. Environmental exposures to particles other than cigarette smoking, including biomass fuel smoke and ambient air pollution, as well as numerous occupational particle exposures, have also been associated with IPF. The pathogenesis of the disease includes a complexation and sequestration of cell iron at the particle surface, which resu …

Food Waste Compost as a Tool of Microbiome-Assisted Agri-Culture for Sustainable Protection of Vegetable Crops Against Soil-Borne Parasites.

A low-scale Food Waste Compost (FWC1), characterized by optimal physic-chemical parameters and high organic matter percentages, was used as a fertilizer and a bio-stimulant for vegetable plants. Groups of treated plants were inoculated with active juveniles of root-knot nematodes to detect the effect on plant defense. Optimal amounts of compost mixed with soil increased plant biomass 30% compared to untreated plants. Moreover, when plants were inoculated, treated roots contained about 50% less sedentary forms (SFs) of nematodes and a lower reproduction rate of the parasites than untreated plan…

The rate of glucose metabolism sets the cell morphology across yeast strains and species.

Yeasts are a diverse group of unicellular fungi that have developed a wide array of phenotypes and traits over 400 million years of evolutio … rains tested, we also found that the rate of glucose metabolism influenced ethanol production rate, biomass yield, and carbon dioxide transfer rate. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the rate of glucose metabolism is a key factor shaping yeast cell morphology and physiology, offering new insights into the fundamental principles of yeast biology.

Metabolite-Mediated Trophic Interactions: Long-Term Responses of Thalassiosira weissflogii to High CO2 and Warming Have Cascading Effects on Consumer Metabolism.

Rising CO2 and warming are key components of climate change that are reshaping ecosystems by altering trophic interactions. Although a large body of literature describes changes in biomass in response to these drivers, the biochemical mechanisms driving these shifts remain unclear. This study investigated the long-term response of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii to high CO2, warming, and their combinations (3.5 years, ~2000 generations) and examined how these changes affect its metabolomic profile and influence a primary consumer (a clam), using metabolomics and biochemical analysi…

New insights into carbon metabolism in Spathaspora passalidarum for second-generation ethanol production.

Bioethanol is a sustainable, low-impact energy source with the potential to reduce or even replace fossil fuel consumption. Second-generatio … ore, S. passalidarum was able to metabolize arabinose and glycerol, although these pathways favored biomass production through oxygen-dependent processes. Arabinose could be co-metabolized with xylose, but its assimilation was markedly suppressed in the presence of glucose. Collectively, these findings provide new insights into the metabolic regulation of …

Catalytic degradation of kraft lignin to determine its antioxidant potential for industrial purposes.

The lignin fraction of the lignocellulosic biomass corresponds to 15-30 % wt. This is largely obtained as a by-product of wood pulping to produce cellulose and paper, with the kraft process being the most used by industry. The chemical composition of lignin makes an excellent raw material for obtaining various chemical compounds with industrial applications, such as phenolic resins, biofuels and fine chemical products. Furthermore, lignin has high potential as a raw material for sustainable additives for liquid fuels, due to its aromatic nature, since its alkylphenols can be used as antioxidan…

Discussion of the possibility of increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis using genetic and metabolic engineering methods.

Photosynthesis is the main process by which biomass of living matter is created from inorganic carbon. However, the efficiency of photosynthesis is low. The main reason for the low efficiency of photosynthesis is the properties of the enzyme that fixes carbon dioxide - ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxidase (RuBisCO). There are reasons to believe that it is impossible to improve the properties of RuBisCO. It is apparently possible to significantly increase the efficiency of photosynthesis only by replacing RuBisCO with another enzyme. Among the known enzymes capable of fixing CO2, there…
