[Potentials for research and innovations in allied health professions in Germany].

In order to address the increasing complexity and continuously changing needs and demands in the German healthcare system, there is a need to strengthen knowledge translation, evidence-based practice and the conduct of clinical trials in the field of allied health professions. An interdisciplinary working group representing the fields of nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy developed a guide and a concept for seminars to provide potential analyses for research and innovations in the allied health professions in Germany. These potential analyses compare the

Addiction industry studies: understanding how proconsumption influences block effective interventions.

The legalized consumption of products with addiction potential, such as tobacco and alcohol, contributes in myriad ways to poor physical and mental health and to deterioration in social well- being. These impacts are well documented, as are a range of public health interventions that are demonstrably effective in reducing harm. I have discussed the capacity for the profits from these substances to be deployed in ways that block or divert resources from interventions known to be effective. Addiction industry studies constitute a new and previously neglected area of research focusing specificall

Manhattan transfer: lethal radiation, bone marrow transplantation, and the birth of stem cell biology, ca. 1942-1961.

This study investigates how, in the late 1940s and 1950s, fears of nuclear accidents and nuclear warfare shaped postwar radiobiology. The new and intense forms of radiation generated by nuclear reactor technology, and which would be released in the event of a nuclear war, created concerns about a public-health hazard unprecedented in form and scale. Fears of inadvertent exposure to acute and potentially lethal radiation launched a search for anti-radiation therapies, out of which emerged the new technique of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). This study analyzes the use of BMT first as a resea

A numerical study of non-Newtonian blood-based hybrid nanofluid flow over a stretching cylinder with Cattaneo-Christov heat flux and homogeneous heterogeneous reactions.

Non-Newtonian hybrid nanofluids have attracted considerable attention in biomedical and industrial thermal systems because of their superior heat transfer performance and complex transport characteristics. In particular, blood-based hybrid nanofluids containing copper (Cu) and alumina (Al₂O₃) nanoparticles offer promising applications in biomedical transport processes and advanced thermal management systems. However, the classical Fourier heat conduction model is often insufficient to accurately describe thermal relaxation effects and chemically reactive transport phenomena occurring in such c

Amnion-derived hydrogels as a versatile platform for regenerative therapy: from lab to market.

In recent years, the amnion (AM) has emerged as a versatile tool for stimulating tissue regeneration and has been of immense interest for clinical applications. AM is an abundant and cost-effective tissue source that does not face strict ethical issues for biomedical applications. The outstanding biological attributes of AM, including side-dependent angiogenesis, low immunogenicity, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and antibacterial properties facilitate its usage for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, the clinical usage of thin AM sheets is accompanied by some limitations

Protocol for the isolation of the mouse sympathetic splanchnic-celiac-superior mesenteric ganglion complex.

Neurons that originate from pre-vertebral sympathetic ganglia, the splanchnic-celiac-superior mesenteric ganglion complex (SCSMG) in mouse, have important roles in control of organs of the upper abdomen. Here, we present a protocol for the isolation of the mouse sympathetic SCSMG. We describe steps for surgical incision, ganglia isolation, ganglia fine dissection, and whole-mount SCSMG after clearing-enhanced 3D (Ce3D) clearing method and immunohistochemistry. Given the importance of mice in studies of that control, this protocol aims to assist biomedical researchers in the dissection of the m…

Infertility as seen by the infertile couples from a collectivistic culture.

Infertility in collectivistic cultures is usually regarded as a matter of social stigmatization instead of a biomedical problem. It has adverse sociocultural consequences, especially for the female spouse. The current study, by involving 20 infertile couples, was a qualitative research focusing on the sociocultural experiences of the infertile couples about the nature, causes, and consequences of infertility. The findings of the current study clearly depicted the sociocultural factors involved in interpreting infertility as a matter of shame and bad reputation for the couple and its family. Th

Lyme Disease and the Epistemic Tensions of "Medically Unexplained Illnesses".

In the US, disagreement over the biological basis of "chronic Lyme disease" has resulted in the institutionalization of two standards of care: "mainstream" and "Lyme-literate." For mainstream physicians, chronic Lyme disease is a "medically unexplained illness" that presents with an abundance of "symptoms" in the absence of diagnostic "signs." For Lyme-literate physicians, and complementary and alternative medicine practitioners more generally, symptoms alone provide sufficient evidence for medical explanation. Drawing upon ethnographic research among mainstream and Lyme-literate physicians, I

Highly adaptive Phenuiviridae with biomedical importance in multiple fields.

The newly established virus family Phenuiviridae in Bunyavirales harbors viruses infecting three kingdoms of host organisms (animals, plants, and fungi), which is rare in known virus families. Many phenuiviruses are arboviruses and replicate in two distinct hosts (e.g., insects and humans or rice). Multiple phenuivirid species, such as Dabie bandavirus, Rift Valley fever phlebovirus, and Rice stripe tenuivirus, are highly pathogenic to humans, animals, or plants. They impose heavy global burdens on human health, livestock industry, and agriculture and are research hotspots. In recent years the

[Primates as experimental animals].

The term "primates" comprises a varied group of animals, consisting of more than 250 different species. The close evolutionary relationship to man resulted in the use of nonhuman primates as subjects of study for scientists from different research fields. In biomedical research the use of primates is restricted to questions which cannot be answered by animals with less developed physiological senses. Primates play an important role in infectious disease research, as many pathogens relevant to humans can be transferred to selected primate species. In the last few decades this applied especially…

Emerging Technologies in Cardiovascular Disease Modeling: Bridging Basic Science and Clinical Translation.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, yet therapeutic development is limited by experimental models that incompletely recapitulate human physiology, disease heterogeneity, and treatment responses. Emerging human-relevant models, including patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells, cardiac organoids, engineered tissues, organ-on-chip systems, genome editing, multi-omics, and computational approaches, are improving the ability to investigate cardiovascular disease mechanisms and therapeutic responses. In this review, we critically compare these technolo

Fibroblast Growth Factors and Their Receptors in Major Depressive Disorder: A Scoping Review of Translational Research.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex psychiatric condition whose pathophysiology extends beyond the classic monoamine hypothesis, involving impaired neuroplasticity, neuroinflammation, HPA axis dysregulation, and altered neurotrophic signaling. The fibroblast growth factor (FGF) system, comprising ligands and their receptors (FGFRs), has emerged as a key candidate regulator of these processes. This scoping review qualitatively synthesizes current clinical, postmortem, and preclinical evidence on the role of the FGF system in MDD and antidepressant response. A structured literature sear

Targeting the Tumor Microenvironment Network to Overcome Immunotherapy Resistance in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Mechanisms to Clinical Translation.

BACKGROUND: Immunotherapy has transformed the treatment landscape for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), yet resistance mediated by the tumor microenvironment (TME) limits its efficacy in most patients. This review aims to synthesize the current understanding of the TME as an integrated network driving immunotherapy resistance and to evaluate emerging therapeutic strategies aimed at overcoming it. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive narrative review of key literature in the field, sourced from PubMed and major conference proceedings. The focus was on mechanistic studies elucidatin

Cancer-associated fibroblasts in therapeutic resistance of hepatocellular carcinoma: evidence, mechanisms, and translational implications.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains difficult to treat because responses to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are limited and heterogeneous. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) can influence therapeutic responses through paracrine signaling, immune regulation, and extracellular matrix remodeling, but CAF-driven tumor progression should not be equated with therapeutic resistance. This review critically evaluates HCC-specific evidence according to defined drug exposure, treatment-related outcomes, and functional rescue. The most mechanistically resolve

Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived macrophages (iMacs) in translational medicine: Disease models, drug testing, and therapeutic applications.

Macrophages play key roles in innate immunity, inflammation, and homeostasis. However, conventional macrophage models, particularly primary macrophages derived from donor monocytes (MDMs), are limited by donor-to-donor variability, limited proliferative capacity and non-renewable nature, low scalability, and poor genetic tractability. Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived macrophages (iMacs) have emerged as an alternative that offers a renewable source of engineered human macrophages. This review summarizes the approaches used to generate and characterize iMacs, highlighting their functional p
