Many bacterial pathogens of animals and plants use a conserved type III secretion system (T3SS) to inject virulence effector proteins directly into eukaryotic cells to subvert host functions. In this study 104 adult patients with chronic conjunctival irritation without obvious diagnosis were investigated by conjunctival scrapings. The smears were stained with May-Grünwald-Giemsa or fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal antibodies prepared against Chlamydiae. In 45 cases it was possible to make a correct diagnosis of Chlamydia infection (29%) or allergy (20%).

The effect of progesterone alone and in combination with estradiol was investigated in ovariectomized and gonadally intact female guinea pigs infected with the chlamydial agent of guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis (GPIC). The course of the infection, as determined by the percentage of cells with GPIC (chlamydia) inclusions in Giemsa-stained vaginal scrapings, was not affected in animals receiving 5.0 mg of progesterone daily. Thirty-two trachoma strains were simultaneously titrated in the yolk sac of embryonated chicken eggs and in HeLa 229 cells pretreated with diethylaminoethyl-dextran to determine the relative sensitivity of the two culture systems for detection of the infection.
