During eczematous skin inflammation, the main constituents of the skin, keratinocytes (KC), play an important role in inducing and shaping the immunological response to environmental stimuli. This review focuses on the epidermal inflammation caused by keratinocyte-T cell interactions arising from a disturbed barrier function of the skin. In eczematous dermatitis, activated dermis- and epidermis-infiltrating T cells target KC for apoptosis. Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering disorder that typically affects elderly patients. Rarely, it can occur in childhood. Vesicular pemphigoid is an atypical variant of BP. We report a case of childhood vesicular pemphigoid in an infant aged 6 months that was initially misdiagnosed as severe atopic dermatitis (AD). To the best of our knowledge, only one other case of childhood vesicular pemphigoid has been reported in the literature.

Recently an alarming increase in the prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to nickel has been noted worldwide, with the majority of cases occurring in women and children. A known risk factor for the development of nickel sensitization is early and prolonged exposure to the allergen. Children frequently encounter nickel in many everyday objects, and it has become apparent that cell phones may constitute a substantial source of nickel exposure. We identified 3 patients with unilateral nickel-induced facial dermatitis elicited by cell phone use.

Cyanamide is a chemical substance used in the treatment of chronic alcoholism as well in agriculture as a fertilizer. We report the case of a 28-year-old healthy non-atopic man that developed a severe skin eruption after the accidental penetration of a small amount of Dormex (a plant growth regulator containing cyanamide) through the patient's gloves. Patch tests revealed positive reactions to Dormex 1% pet. and cyanamide at a dilution of 0.1% pet. and 1% pet. We discuss the causes of sensitization in a patients that regularly used protective measures during anti-parasites treatments.

Skin reactions to chemicals used by hair dressers are usually reported as irritative or allergic contact dermatitis of the hands. We describe a 15-year old girl who suffered an unusually severe injury to her scalp with necrosis of the galea aponeurotica as a result of highlighting her hair. Injury resulted in a scaring alopecia, which can only be treated by plastic reconstructive surgery. The cause for this injury might have been a higher than usual concentration of hydrogen peroxide used for highlighting the hair.

Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis is typically described as a severe irritant dermatitis of the perianal region. However, Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis, perianal pseudoverrucous papules and nodules, and granuloma gluteale infantum/ adultorum have been regarded as discrete entities or all part of the same clinical spectrum, representing the result of chronic, severe, irritant contact dermatitis. We present a case of Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis and a discussion of the clinical spectrum of diseases to which it belongs.
