Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3): a novel diagnosis marker in Burkitt lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

The distinction between Burkitt lymphoma (BL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), two types of mature aggressive B-cell lymphomas that require distinct treatments, can be difficult because of forms showing features intermediate between DLBCL and BL (here called BL/DLBCL). They can be discriminated by the presence of c-myc translocations characteristic of BL. However, these are not exclusive of BL and when present in DLBCL are associated with lower survival. In this study, we show that Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3) is differentially expressed among BL and DLBCL. Analysis of ge

Tactile shape discrimination recruits human lateral occipital complex during early perceptual processing.

Neuroimaging studies investigating somatosensory-based object recognition in humans have revealed activity in the lateral occipital complex, a cluster of regions primarily associated with visual object recognition. To date, determining whether this activity occurs during or subsequent to recognition per se, has been difficult to assess due to the low temporal resolution of the hemodynamic response. To more finely measure the timing of somatosensory object recognition processes we employed high density EEG using a modified version of a paradigm previously applied to neuroimaging experiments. Si

Patterns in perceived employment discrimination for adults with multiple sclerosis.

Using multiple correspondence analysis, data from the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (1992-2003) were examined for types and patterns of allegations of discrimination filed by adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Women comprised the majority of the Charging Parties (n=687, 67%), and most of the Charging Parties were White (n=769, 76%). The total number of allegations studied (N=3,668) was divided into two datasets, specifically 1,142 occurring separately and 2,526 occurring as part of a multiple allegation set. The four mos

Histocompatibility screening by molecular techniques: use of polymerase chain reaction products and heteroduplex formation.

Novel molecular approaches have recently become available allowing improved major histocompatibility complex (MHC) matching of potential allogeneic bone marrow donors and recipients. Current cellular and serological assays are hindered by aberrant cell populations and limited reagents which only detect an individuals' phenotype. Therefore, a molecular screening protocol which discriminates at the genotypic level would be advantageous. Here we describe a two-step DNA-based approach that can be applied to large-scale screening of potential donors. A primary screen, utilizing polymerase chain rea

Automated recognition of cell images in high grade malignant lymphoma and reactive follicular hyperplasia.

In the past, the comparison of results of studies on malignant lymphomas has been biased by the use of different classifications of the diseases and to an even greater extent by subjective interpretation in the classification of the tumour cells. To overcome these short-comings, we have developed cytometric features specifically for automated recognition of cell images from high grade malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) and reactive lymphoid lesions. This study used a colour TV-microscope system, high resolution scanning (13.3 pixel/microns), and image processing to study a total of 3600 l

Understanding purchase intention toward upcycled foods through a consumer education lens: an extended theory of planned behavior approach.

BACKGROUND: Upcycled foods offer a promising pathway for reducing food waste, improving resource-use efficiency, and promoting sustainable food consumption by transforming food resources that retain edible or nutritional value into new food products. However, the mechanisms through which consumers form purchase intention toward upcycled foods remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: Drawing on the extended theory of planned behavior, this study developed a research model to examine the effects of health consciousness, environmental awareness, and product knowledge on attitude, as well as th

Item analysis of the gastroesophageal reflux disease quality of life instrument QLICD-GERD based on classical test theory and item response theory.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive disorder that severely affects patients' physical and psychological health, leading to a substantial decline in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The Quality of Life Instrument for Chronic Diseases-Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (QLICD-GERD, V1.0) was developed to comprehensively assess the impact of GERD using both generic and disease-specific modules. This study aimed to analyze the psychometric properties and item performance of the QLICD-GERD (V1.0) using both Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theor

Enhanced serodiagnosis of opisthorchiasis using a multi-epitope dot-ELISA: comparative evaluation of visual and imageJ-assisted analysis of IgG and IgM responses.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchiasis remains an important public health problem in Southeast Asia and is strongly associated with cholangiocarcinoma. Although stool-based diagnosis is widely used, its sensitivity is limited in light infections, highlighting the need for alternative diagnostic approaches. This study developed and evaluated a dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) based on a multi-epitope recombinant antigen (OvCB_OvAEP_OvCF) for the serological detection of Opisthorchis viverrini, and compared conventional visual interpretation with ImageJ-assisted digital analysis for IgG an

DTI-Associated Blood Biomarkers in a Human Perioperative Brain Perturbation Model.

Circulating biomarkers of brain perturbation are rarely evaluated against anatomically localized in vivo imaging measures, limiting biological interpretation. We tested whether perioperative changes in candidate biomarkers were associated with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-defined microstructural changes in a controlled human perioperative model. In a paired cohort of 75 patients undergoing left-sided encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis, we obtained matched pre- and postoperative DTI and blood samples. Six biomarkers (ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 [UCH-L1], glial fibrillary acidic protein [GF

Tongue Thickness and Skin-to-Hyoid Distance as Ultrasonographic Markers of Difficult Airway in Patients Without Anticipated Difficulty: A Prospective Diagnostic Accuracy Study of 713 Adults.

Background/Objectives: In patients without clinically anticipated difficulty, an unexpected difficult airway carries the greatest potential for harm, yet routine bedside tests exclude difficulty poorly, and evidence for point-of-care ultrasonography remains heterogeneous, with difficult mask ventilation rarely studied as a distinct outcome. We evaluated three rapid anterior-neck ultrasonographic parameters-tongue thickness (TT), skin-to-hyoid-bone distance (SHBD), and cricothyroid membrane length (CTML)-for their diagnostic performance and independent association with a difficult airway in adu

Brain Atrophy and White Matter Changes Grading Agreement on NCCT and MRI in Ischemic Stroke.

PURPOSE: Brain frailty measures like atrophy and white matter changes (WMC) are becoming increasingly relevant in stroke outcome prediction but are conventionally thought to be best seen on MRI compared to CT. We assessed agreement between baseline CT vs follow-up MRI ratings for brain atrophy and WMC; and compared their discriminative ability for 90-day functional outcomes in acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: In this post-hoc, observational analysis of baseline CT and follow-up MRI data from the Alteplase compared to Tenecteplase (AcT) randomised-controlled trial, experts assessed brain atroph

Plantar Pressure and Radiographic Deformity at Diagnosis of Active Charcot Neuro-Osteoarthropathy as Potential Prognostic Markers for Time to Remission.

Background: Active Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy (CNO) requires prolonged offloading, yet no reliable markers exist to predict time to remission at diagnosis. This study examined whether plantar pressure and radiographic deformity at diagnosis are associated with time to remission, and whether these measures provided independent and complementary prognostic value. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 20 adults with active CNO. Barefoot peak plantar pressure and five radiographic angles from weight-bearing lateral radiographs were assessed at diagnosis. Associations with time to r

Preoperative prediction of postoperative SIRS and sepsis after ureteroscopic lithotripsy: discriminative performance of large language models.

Postoperative systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis following ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) are uncommon but potentially life-threatening complications. No prior study has evaluated large language models (LLMs) for predicting post-URS SIRS/sepsis using exclusively preoperative parameters. This study evaluated the discriminative performance of LLMs in this setting. This retrospective case-control study included 210 patients who underwent URS between January 2024 and December 2025 (42 SIRS/sepsis cases, 168 controls). Risk scores (0-100) were generated using GPT-4o-mini and

Plasma circulating tumor deoxyribonucleic acid methylation enables noninvasive disease stratification beyond prostate-specific antigen in prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Accurate discrimination between localized and metastatic prostate cancer (PCa) remains a critical unmet need in clinical practice, particularly in patients with equivocal imaging findings or biologically high-risk disease. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) methylation represents a stable epigenetic signal that may reflect tumor burden and disease state. We aimed to evaluate whether plasma ctDNA methylation markers can accurately discriminate disease state beyond conventional clinical parameters. METHODS: A total of 174 patients were included, comprising localized PCa (n = 73), metasta

Diagnostic Accuracy of Serum-Based Fibrosis Scores for Clinically Significant Liver Fibrosis in an East Asian Cohort.

Serum-based fibrosis scores are widely used for noninvasive risk stratification in chronic liver disease; however, direct comparisons across liver disease etiologies remain limited, particularly in Asian populations with a high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This study retrospectively analyzed the data of adults who underwent transient elastography (FibroScan) at a university-affiliated hospital. Three fibrosis scores were evaluated: Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4), aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), and metabolic dysfunction-assoc
