Improved visualization of malpositioned middle ear prostheses using photon-counting detector CT: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of middle ear prostheses requires high-resolution imaging to assess position and structural integrity. PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic performance of photon-counting-detector (PCD)-CT for middle ear prosthesis imaging in cadaveric specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine different middle ear prostheses were implanted in 5 fresh-frozen whole-head specimens, both in correct anatomic position and displaced to mimic malposition. Specimens were scanned on PCD-CT (NAEOTOM Alpha, Siemens) and energy-integrating-detector (EID)-CT (SOMATOM Force, Siemens), reconstructed at 0.2 …

Investigating the neural origins of Ear-EEG: A correlation study using scalp EEG source reconstruction.

Ear electroencephalography (Ear-EEG) has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional scalp EEG, offering a noninvasive, discreet, and portable method for neural monitoring. While its ability to capture brain activity is established, the cortical origins of Ear-EEG signals remain unclear. It is uncertain whether these signals primarily reflect activity from nearby cortical regions or volume-conducted signals from distant areas. This study investigates the cortical sources of Ear-EEG signals and their relationship to neural activity across frequency bands, including alpha rhythms, sleep sp…

Genome-Wide Association Mapping of Ear Traits in Early-Maturing Maize Under Contrasting Planting Densities.

Developing early-maturing maize varieties with improved tolerance to high-density planting is essential for enhancing yield in China. In this study, a unique panel of 498 cold-adapted early-maturing inbred lines were evaluated for ear length (EL) and ear diameter (ED) across two locations under contrasting planting densities in one growing season. Phenotypic analysis revealed abundant phenotypic variation in these ear traits among the tested lines, and there were significant correlations between environments. A total of 406,897 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphism markers (SNPs) were ob…

Guideline-Integrated Large Language Models Improve Decision Support for Acute Ear, Nose and Throat Emergencies.

BACKGROUND: Acute otolaryngologic emergencies such as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), epistaxis, and acute facial paralysis frequently present to emergency departments (EDs), where early guideline-concordant decisions are critical to prevent irreversible morbidity. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly explored for clinical decision support, yet their ability to consistently apply specialty guidelines in time-sensitive settings remains uncertain. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which supplies LLMs with authoritative guideline content during response generation, may imp…

Acetazolamide alleviates motion sickness by inhibiting inner ear carbonic anhydrase 2 and reducing endolymph volume.

Motion sickness is common in aerospace, aviation and maritime operations, and travel by vehicles or ships. Existing preventive and therapeutic drugs for motion sickness induce central nervous system (CNS)-related side effects; therefore, there is an urgent need to find new anti-motion sickness targets and to develop novel drugs with reduced adverse effects. In this study, we found that rotational stimulation significantly upregulated carbonic anhydrase 2 (CA2) expression in the inner ears of guinea pigs and mice. Pretreatment with acetazolamide (AZ), an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, effecti…

Complete Ear Reconstruction With Pre-laminated Radial Artery-Based Free Flap in Old Traumatic Amputation.

Total ear reconstruction in old avulsion injuries can be extremely challenging for reconstructive surgeons due to regional scarring. This rules out the use of local flaps. In this case report, a young woman presented to us with a seven-year-old total amputation of the left ear, which was initially reconstructed with a Medpor implant and occipito-parietal fascial flap. The implant had to be later explanted due to infection. The authors decided to use a pre-laminated radial free flap with a costal cartilage graft framework for ear reconstruction.

Transcriptomic profiling of inner ear hair cell spontaneous regeneration reveals the key role of dlx5a.

Sensory hair cells (HCs) are susceptible to damage, typically causing permanent hearing and balance deficits in mammals due to limited regeneration. Understanding spontaneous regeneration in non-mammalian models offers key insights for restoring sensory function. Here, we establish a zebrafish semicircular canal crista HC injury model and characterize subsequent regeneration and functional recovery processes. Lineage tracing demonstrates that regenerated crista HCs derive from preexisting and newly formed supporting cells (SCs) that emerged after crista HC injury via both mitotic and non-mitot…

Investigating Wearable Sensor Placement for Heat Risk Monitoring of Firefighters: A Skin-Ear Temperature Study.

In firefighting, heat stress is a significant physiological hazard that leads to an increased risk of heat-related illness. Heat-risk monitoring of core body temperature (CBT) can help identify early signs of heat strain and can be accomplished with wearable sensing technologies (WST). This study employs non-invasive temperature sensing to examine the relationship between tympanic temperature and skin temperature (ST) and across multiple on-body locations under different experimental conditions. This study was conducted with 10 healthy adults, male and female, under calm and non-calm condition…

Long-term outcomes of middle ear regenerative therapy using cell sheet transplantation combined with tympanoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Regenerative medicine using autologous mucosa-derived epithelial cell sheets has attracted increasing attention as a novel therapeutic strategy for reconstructing epithelial tissues. We have developed a new regenerative treatment for middle ear diseases, including cholesteatoma, using autologous nasal mucosal epithelial cell sheets, and conducted clinical studies demonstrating its potential to suppress postoperative recurrence. In this study, we evaluated the long-term clinical outcomes of patients treated with this approach. METHODS: In our clinical research project, six patien…

The Role of Ear Canal Sound Pressure in Bone Conduction Across Different Bone Conduction Devices.

OBJECTIVES: Conflicting findings exist regarding the contribution of the outer ear canal pathway to bone conduction (BC) hearing perception. This pathway, represented by the ear canal sound pressure (EC SP ) generated under BC stimulation, may vary in significance depending on the type and position of bone conduction devices (BCDs). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between EC SP , cochlear promontory motion (V PROM ), and intracochlear pressure in the scala vestibuli (P SV ) across different BCD coupling types to evaluate the ear canal's contribution to BC hearing. DESIGN: Mea…

Rapid Postmortem Temporal Bone Extraction and Dissection of Human Inner Ear Organs From Organ Donors.

We developed a postmortem protocol for temporal bone extraction and dissection in organ donors, enabling atraumatic bilateral temporal bone retrieval within 1-2 h of ischemia, followed by stepwise microsurgical dissection of neurosensory organs. Combining rapid extraction, abbreviated decalcification, and atraumatic microsurgical dissection, this protocol establishes a scientifically versatile framework for human inner ear tissue acquisition.

Normative Ranges for Wideband Middle Ear Muscle Reflex Magnitude: Limited Potential for Diagnosing Cochlear Deafferentation.

PURPOSE: Cochlear synaptopathy, the loss of the synapses between the inner hair cells and their auditory nerve fiber targets, is expected to be a common type of auditory deficit resulting from noise exposure or aging. Unfortunately, there is currently no means for diagnosing cochlear synaptopathy or other forms of cochlear deafferentation. Wideband middle ear muscle reflexes (MEMRs) have been proposed as a potential diagnostic indicator of cochlear deafferentation, but we lack normative ranges for MEMR magnitude. The objective of this study was to develop normative ranges for wideband MEMR mag…
