Perinatal asphyxia affects rat auditory processing: implications for auditory perceptual impairments in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Perinatal asphyxia, a naturally and commonly occurring risk factor in birthing, represents one of the major causes of neonatal encephalopathy with long term consequences for infants. Here, degraded spectral and temporal responses to sounds were recorded from neurons in the primary auditory cortex (A1) of adult rats exposed to asphyxia at birth. Response onset latencies and durations were increased. Response amplitudes were reduced. Tuning curves were broader. Degraded successive-stimulus masking inhibitory mechanisms were associated with a reduced capability of neurons to follow higher-rate re

What's in a name? Eponyms in head and neck imaging.

Head and neck (H&N) eponyms serve to honour physicians who have made important contributions. Compared with more descriptive diagnostic names, eponyms can sometimes be confusing, especially to the novice. Adding to the confusion, eponyms are sometimes applied incorrectly. Nevertheless, their use remains common in the medical literature and clinical practice. Familiarity with H&N eponyms is important for accurate communication with radiology colleagues and clinicians. Some eponyms describe potentially fatal infections and their urgency should be appreciated. Other eponyms, such as those for inn

Perioperative care of the patient with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder of the connective tissue whose primary manifestation is an increased susceptibility to fractures. Severely affected patients often suffer multiple fractures after minimal or no trauma. In addition to its primary effect on the skeletal system, the alterations in connective tissue may affect several extraskeletal structures, such as the cardiovascular system, sclera, middle and inner ear, tendons/ligaments, central nervous system, and teeth. Patients with osteogenesis imperfecta also have a greater incidence of airway anomalies, thoracic anatomy a

Modest phenotypic improvements in ASA-deficient mice with only one UDP-galactose:ceramide-galactosyltransferase gene.

BACKGROUND: Arylsulfatase A (ASA)-deficient mice are a model for the lysosomal storage disorder metachromatic leukodystrophy. This lipidosis is characterised by the lysosomal accumulation of the sphingolipid sulfatide. Storage of this lipid is associated with progressive demyelination. We have mated ASA-deficient mice with mice heterozygous for a non-functional allele of UDP-galactose:ceramide-galactosyltransferase (CGT). This deficiency is known to lead to a decreased synthesis of galactosylceramide and sulfatide, which should reduce sulfatide storage and improve pathology in ASA-deficient mi

Surgical aspects of cochlear implantation: mechanisms of insertional trauma.

The development of hybrid electroacoustic devices has made conservation of residual hearing an important goal in cochlear implant surgery. Our laboratory has recently conducted anatomical studies directed toward better understanding mechanisms underlying loss of residual hearing associated with electrode insertion. This paper provides an overview of observations based on microdissection, scanning electron microscopy and temporal bone histology relating to inner ear injury that may occur during implant surgery. Trauma to cochlear structures including lateral wall tissues, the basilar membrane,

[Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome. Which characteristics must the HNO doctor consider in its diagnosis].

Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome (Kabuki make-up syndrome) is a congenital disorder with characteristic facial features and possibly anomalies of the skeletal system and internal organs. There is an increasing number of reports of patients with combined hearing impairment, inner ear deformities or sensorineural hearing impairment. In addition, the patients often suffer from therapy-resistant chronic otitis media. In addition to multiple cardiac and renal deformities, our 3 year old patient has a hearing impairment due to chronic otitis media with chronic otorrhea, and requires a hearing aid. A high-def

Autoimmune deafness is not related to hyperreactivity to type II collagen.

The pathogenic role of anti-type II collagen was analysed in a variety of hearing losses, in age-matched controls and in different autoimmune diseases. The immune reactivity of peripheral blood lymphocytes to type II collagen was studied by the degree of proliferation measured as the incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine in cultured lymphocytes. The anti-type II collagen antibodies showed a very low incidence in the hearing loss group. Lymphocytes of otosclerosis, Meniere's disease and other sensorineural deafness patients proliferated in response to concanavalin A and to type II collagen to a lo

Adrenergic innervation of the human endolymphatic sac.

Adrenergic innervation of the human endolymphatic sac (ES) has not been verified previously. To investigate this question a sensitive histofluorescence method for visualization of catecholamines and serotonin, using a solution composed of sucrose-potassium phosphate-glyoxylic acid (SPG) in cryostat sections, was employed. Three human ES specimens were obtained during surgery for acoustic neuroma. Distinct fluorescence in the subepithelial tissue, indicating the presence of monoaminergic neurones and their axonal varicosities, was observed. SPG-positive terminal nerve fibres around small ES cap

Developmental ototoxicity.

The aminoglycoside antibiotics are active bactericidal agents used for the treatment of tuberculosis and gram-negative bacterial infections. Well over 2 million patients per year receive aminoglycosides; however, a major limitation to their use is ototoxicity (cochleotoxicity and vestibulotoxicity), nephrotoxicity, and neuromuscular blockade. Ototoxicity can result from aminoglycoside administration to any patient population, including adults, fetuses, and preterm and full-term neonates. Preterm infants and experimental animals are hypersensitive to aminoglycoside ototoxicity during the period

[Lermoyez syndrome. Clinical aspects and follow-up].

The clinical data and follow-up of five patients with Lermoyez syndrome are reported. Three of them presented with marked lesions of the cervical spine. Serological antibodies against nuclei and sarcolemma as well as against heart muscle and gastric cells were found. Tests of the sera against guinea pig cochlear tissue showed antinuclear antibodies in one patient and against basilar membrane structures in another. Three sera were negative despite positive heterologous finding. Therapy included infusions active on the inner ear, decompression of the saccus endolymphaticus in two cases and physi

Transmission of complex pressure waves through the perilymphatic fluid in cats.

The response of the perilymphatic fluid to complex pressure waves, composed of low-frequency sine waves superimposed on square-wave pressure pulses of varying amplitude was studied. In cats with a patent cochlear aqueduct a pronounced positive pressure change could be induced in the perilymphatic fluid when complex pressure waves were used. The time constants associated with the stabilization of the perilymphatic pressure after the application of pressure complexes were longer than those associated with square-wave pulses alone. The results indicate that the functional patency of the cochlear

Dynamics of otosclerosis-like lesions in LP/J mice.

The LP/J inbred mouse is the first known animal to spontaneously develop otosclerosis-like bone lesions in the middle and inner ear. These abnormal bone foci resemble human otosclerotic lesions, are inherited, and produce a progressive hearing loss. On the basis of histological evaluation alone, it was unclear whether these otosclerosis-like lesions in LP/J mice develop suddenly or gradually as in human otosclerosis. To study the dynamics of lesion formation, four different colored fluorochrome bone labels were given in sequence to postpubertal LP/J mice and CBA/J mice as normal controls. All

[Candida meningitis. Case report].

Subacute meningitis caused by Candida albicans was confirmed by culture and immunoserologically in a 19-year-old girl. Combined administration of amphotericin B and flucytosine only slowly affected the course of the disease despite impressive improvement in clinical symptoms. Pleocytosis (1000/mm3) in cerebrospinal fluid persisted. Falling Candida antibody titre in serum and CSF, however, pointed to an improvement in the acute infection. Treatment had to be discontinued after 42 days because of side-effects such as rigor, fever and polyuria with low concentration. Under serial clinical observa

Targeted Next Generation Sequencing Revealed a Novel Homozygous Loss-of-Function Mutation in ILDR1 Gene Causes Autosomal Recessive Nonsyndromic Sensorineural Hearing Loss in a Chinese Family.

Hereditary hearing impairment is one of the major and common birth defects in Chinese population. Non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss (NSHL) is the most common types of hereditary hearing impairment. Genotypically and phenotypically NSHL is extremely heterogenous and follow either autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive or X-linked mode of inheritance. Presently, 127 genes have been identified to be associated with both syndromic and (NSHL). Here, we studied a Chinese family with moderate and profound hearing impairment. The proband is a 30-year old Chinese man. The proband was born wit

Auditory behaviour and brainstem histochemistry in adult rats with characterized ear damage after neonatal ossicle ablation or cochlear disruption.

Binaural and monaural ossicle ablation in neonate rats before the time of onset of auditory input resulted in hearing deficits as detected by behavioural responses to sound stimuli in these rats as young adults. Cochlear disruption at the same neonatal age similarly resulted in the absence of startle reflexes in many of the rats. When the middle and inner ears of the rats were analysed postmortem in serial sections, it was observed that most ears after neonatal ossicle ablation contained only small remnants of the malleus-incus unit, separated from the stapes; in other ears an apparent continu

[Research progress on the mechanism of auditory center remodeling and clinical intervention strategies in presbycusis].

Objective:Presbycusis is a bilateral symmetrical hearing loss related to age. The deprivation of auditory input caused by the degeneration of the inner ear structure is the main reason for the remodeling of the auditory center. At the level of the central nervous system, it leads to the upregulation of central gain and the imbalance of excitation-inhibition, thereby causing symptoms such as tinnitus and auditory hypersensitivity. At the cellular and molecular levels, it can induce cross-channel remodeling of the auditory cortex and other multiple senses, leading to a decline in speech ability,

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease Mimicking Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem autoimmune disorder characterized by an inflammatory response targeting melanocyte-associated antigens in tissues such as the uveal tract, inner ear, meninges, and the skin. The classic presentation is bilateral pan-uveitis (choroiditis and multifocal serous retinal detachment) in association with extra-ocular features such signs of meningeal irritation (headache, neck stiffens), auditory signs (tinnitus, hearing loss), and skin changes (poliosis, vitiligo). This is a case of an incomplete form of VKH presenting predominantly with bilateral d

ClC-K Kidney Chloride Channels: From Structure to Pathology.

The molecular basis of chloride transport varies all along the nephron depending on the tubular segments especially in the apical entry of the cell. The major chloride exit pathway during reabsorption is provided by two kidney-specific ClC chloride channels ClC-Ka and ClC-Kb (encoded by CLCNKA and CLCNKB gene, respectively) corresponding to rodent ClC-K1 and ClC-K2 (encoded by Clcnk1 and Clcnk2). These channels function as dimers and their trafficking to the plasma membrane requires the ancillary protein Barttin (encoded by BSND gene). Genetic inactivating variants of the aforementioned genes

Case report: Susac syndrome-two ends of the spectrum, single center case reports and review of the literature.

Susac syndrome is a rare and enigmatic complex neurological disorder primarily affecting small blood vessels in the brain, retina, and inner ear. Diagnosing Susac syndrome may be extremely challenging not only due to its rarity, but also due to the variability of its clinical presentation. This paper describes two vastly different cases-one with mild symptoms and good response to therapy, the other with severe, complicated course, relapses and long-term sequelae despite multiple therapeutic interventions. Building upon the available guidelines, we highlight the utility of black blood MRI in th
