Global Prevalence of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Patients with Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

A meta-analysis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) was performed using five databases (PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus) from 2000 to March 2023. Observational descriptive studies investigating the prevalence of DVT among patients with SCI were included. Data were retrieved by author, country, continent, gender, age, sample source, and additional variables. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Instrument for Studies Reporting Prevalence. Data and random-effects models were used to sy

Exploring the association between volatile organic compound exposure and chronic kidney disease: evidence from explainable machine learning methods.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects approximately 697.5 million people worldwide. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emerging as potential risk factors, but their complex relationships with CKD may be underestimated by traditional linear methods. This study explores the association between urinary VOC metabolites and CKD risk using a combination of epidemiological and interpretable machine learning approaches. METHODS: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-March 2020 pre-pandemic) were analyzed to examine 15 urinary VOC metabolites. Analytical me

SNP genotypes in CYP2C9 and VKORC1 genes do not affect prostate cancer or cancer mortality among warfarin users in Finnish prostate cancer patients.

The coagulation cascade is thought to contribute to cancer progression. Although in vitro studies suggest that anticoagulants, such as warfarin, might reduce cancer progression, epidemiological data indicate that warfarin users may have a higher risk of cancer mortality. However, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that influence warfarin dosing might affect this association. We investigated the risk associations between warfarin use and prostate cancer (PCa) survival, considering the SNP genotypes of CYP2C9 and VKORC1, which are known to impact both warfarin pharmacokinetics and pharmacody

Associations of PM2.5 carbonaceous and ionic constituents with fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO): A panel study with 16 follow-up visits over 4 years.

Epidemiological studies have linked fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to elevated fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), biomarker of airway inflammation. However, the specific roles of PM2.5 chemical components remain underexplored. This panel study examined relationships between temperature-resolved carbon subfractions or ionic components of PM2.5 and FeNO. A cohort of 69 self-reported healthy undergraduate students was followed 16 times between 2014 and 2018. PM2.5 samples were collected from the roof of a campus building, while carbonaceous and ionic components were quantified using a carbo

Exposure to ambient ozone and ovarian reserve in Chinese women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ambient ozone may be associated with a decline in ovarian reserve; however, epidemiological evidence remains limited. We aimed to estimate the association between ambient ozone exposure and ovarian reserve, and to identify critical exposure windows. METHODS: We included 2815 women aged 20-45 years who attended an infertility clinic in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, between 2014 and 2022. We calculated average concentrations of ozone exposure according to the development of follicles (2-month, 4-month, 6- month) and 1-year period prior to measurement, using a satelli

Cannabis use and its impact on respiratory physiology and lung cancer risk: Mechanistic and epidemiological insights (Review).

Cannabis use has become increasingly prevalent due to legalization and social acceptance, raising concerns about its potential health impacts, particularly on respiratory and oncological outcomes. Despite sharing toxic constituents with tobacco smoke, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds, the link between cannabis smoking and lung cancer remains inconclusive. Epidemiological studies present conflicting findings, with some suggesting increased risk among heavy users, particularly when combined with tobacco, while others find no significant association. Chron

Australian General Practitioners' Use of Diagnostic Lumbar Spine Imaging for Patients With Acute Low Back Pain: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) use of imaging for acute low back pain (LBP) is above guideline recommendations, and the reasons for this remain under-researched. We examined the perspectives, expectations and information needs of Australian GPs requesting lumbar spine diagnostic imaging for patients presenting with acute LBP. METHODS: We completed semi-structured interviews with 12 GPs practising in Victoria, Australia. Transcripts were thematically analysed, and themes compared according to whether or not GPs reported they regularly requested imaging for LBP. RESULTS: We identified

Spatial modeling of soil-transmitted helminthiases in Colombia under climate change scenarios.

INTRODUCTION: Soil-transmitted helminthiases remain a significant public health burden in Colombia, especially in rural and tropical areas. Climate change is expected to alter environmental conditions that favor the survival and transmission of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the current spatial distribution of these infections and project prevalence changes by 2035 under climate change scenarios, with and without public health interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ecological study with spatial modeling was conducted, integrating epidemiolo

The slow progression of Japanese encephalitis in aged mice is likely associated to B cell recruitment in the brain.

The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) causes Japanese encephalitis (JE), a severe disease that primarily affects children and induces significant central nervous system complications. With the widespread adoption of vaccination in children, the incidence among older individuals has increased substantially. Despite this epidemiological shift, research on JEV infection in the elderly remains limited. We established JEV infection models using both aged and young mice to explore age-related differences in pathology and underlying mechanisms. Brain tissue samples were analyzed for pathological chan

Acceptance of preventive therapy for latent tuberculosis infection in Chinese children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) is essential for pediatric tuberculosis control in children and adolescents. Evidence indicates most attrition occurs prior to TPT initiation rather than from post-initiation nonadherence. This study systematically evaluated TPT acceptance for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among Chinese children and adolescents and identified key influencing factors through comprehensive database searches (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane, CNKI, Wanfang database, CBM, VIP) up to February 21, 2025. The heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics (95.770%

Seasonal and climatic influence on respiratory infections in children with cystic fibrosis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) and Methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) are the predominant bacteria found in the airways of people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF), significantly contributing to lung disease progression. While various factors influencing the initial acquisition (IA) of these pathogens are known, the impact of environmental conditions remains understudied. This epidemiological study assessed the risk of MSSA and Pa initial acquisitions in relation to seasonality and climatic zones among 1,184 French pwCF under 18 years old. The age at IA for Pa (Pa-IA) and MSSA (MSSA-I
