The olfactory basis of orchid pollination by mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of disease and require sources of carbohydrates for reproduction and survival. Unlike host-related behaviors of mosquitoes, comparatively less is understood about the mechanisms involved in nectar-feeding decisions, or how this sensory information is processed in the mosquito brain. Here we show that Aedes spp. mosquitoes, including Aedes aegypti, are effective pollinators of the Platanthera obtusata orchid, and demonstrate this mutualism is mediated by the orchid's scent and the balance of excitation and inhibition in the mosquito's antennal lobe (AL). The P.

Sensory Biology of Starfish-With Emphasis on Recent Discoveries in their Visual Ecology.

Asteroidea, starfish, constitutes a major part of the macrobenthos in most marine environments. Being members of the echinoderms, they have a nervous system with no well-defined central nervous system. Accordingly, starfish are assumed to pick up rather limited information from the surroundings, and it is also often assumed that most of their behaviors are guided by olfaction. Here, the sensory biology of starfish is reviewed in order to evaluate these assumptions. There is a vast amount of behavioral data dealing with mechanoreception, chemoreception, and combinations of the two (chemosensory

Reduced motivation in the BACHD rat model of Huntington disease is dependent on the choice of food deprivation strategy.

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor, cognitive, psychiatric and metabolic symptoms. Animal models of HD show phenotypes that can be divided into similar categories, with the metabolic phenotype of certain models being characterized by obesity. Although interesting in terms of modeling metabolic symptoms of HD, the obesity phenotype can be problematic as it might confound the results of certain behavioral tests. This concerns the assessment of cognitive function in particular, as tests for such phenotypes are often based on food depriving the

Low-grade chronic inflammation induces behavioral stereotypy in rats.

Schizophrenia is known to be associated with metabolic disturbances including diabetes mellitus, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. A growing body of evidence has suggested abnormal cytokine levels in schizophrenia. In the present study, we explored the effects of low-grade chronic inflammation on behavioral stereotypy in a rat model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In order to induce NAFLD, rats were fed with either water enriched with 30 % fructose or plain tap water for 8 weeks. Following feeding period, behavioral stereotypy was evaluated with apomorphine-induced stereotypy

Photic and pineal modulation of food anticipatory circadian activity rhythms in rodents.

Restricted daily feeding schedules entrain circadian oscillators that generate food anticipatory activity (FAA) rhythms in nocturnal rodents. The location of food-entrainable oscillators (FEOs) necessary for FAA remains uncertain. The most common procedure for inducing circadian FAA is to limit food access to a few hours in the middle of the light period, when activity levels are normally low. Although light at night suppresses activity (negative masking) in nocturnal rodents, it does not prevent the expression of daytime FAA. Nonetheless, light could reduce the duration or magnitude of FAA. I

Is Sanfilippo type B in your mind when you see adults with mental retardation and behavioral problems?

Sanfilippo type B is an autosomal recessive mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS IIIB) caused by deficiency of N-acetyl-alpha-D-glucosaminidase, a lysosomal enzyme involved in the degradation of heparan sulfate. It is characterized by neurologic degeneration, behavioral problems, and mental decline. Somatic features are relatively mild and patients with this disorder can reach late adulthood. It is the most common subtype of MPS in the Netherlands and probably underdiagnosed in adult persons with mental retardation (MR). In order to increase knowledge on the adult phenotype and natural history in Sanfil

Study on the behavioral and metabolic response mechanisms of Peronia verruculata to marine heatwaves.

Intertidal organisms face severe thermal stress due to global warming and frequent marine heatwaves. Thus, this study focused to investigate metabolic characteristics of the intertidal marine mollusk Peronia verruculata under different intensities of simulated marine heatwave stress (Normal Temperature, NT: 26 °C; High Temperature, HT: 30 °C; and Extreme High Temperature, EHT: 34 °C) for 72 h based on behavioral observations, body energy reserves, and differential metabolic markers. The results showed that the survival rate, cumulative movement distance, movement duration, and feeding duration

Feeding a Diurnal Rodent at Night Induces Weight Loss and Body Temperature Reduction Without Food-Anticipatory Activity.

An important component of behavioral plasticity is the ability of animals to shift the timing of daily or seasonal activities to accommodate changing physical and biotic conditions, a phenomenon known as temporal niche switching. Temporal niche switching in response to experimentally altered food availability in the laboratory is often accompanied by locomotor activity that anticipates the time of daily food access ("food-anticipatory activity" = FAA), which reflects the plasticity of the mammalian circadian system. Most FAA studies have been conducted in nocturnal rodents, reporting robust an

Caloric Restriction Preserves BBB Integrity After Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia Through Reducing Neutrophil Infiltration.

AIMS: Caloric restriction is a health-promoting lifestyle that has been reported to protect both white and gray matter in cases of ischemic stroke. This study will explore the underlying mechanism of restricted feeding (RF) and provide a theoretical basis for precise clinical treatment of stroke. METHODS: In this study, we pretreated C57BL/6J mice with 70% RF for a continuous 28-day period prior to 60 min of transient focal cerebral ischemia (tFCI). Histological staining, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and behavioral assessments were used to assess RF's neuroprotection following tFCI. Immuno

Hypothalamic NPFFR2 attenuates central insulin signaling and its knockout diminishes metabolic dysfunction in mouse models of diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamus is a crucial brain region that mediates the effects of insulin and leptin signals on peripheral metabolic functions. Previous research has shown that insulin signals in the hypothalamus act via multiple neuronal circuits and anabolic/catabolic pathways that converge on the vagus nerve and sympathetic fibers to coordinate energy metabolism in peripheral organs. Additionally, neuropeptide FF (NPFF) has been identified as a regulator of feeding behaviors and energy homeostasis in the hypothalamus, but the mechanisms underlying its involvement in metabolic control rema…

The effects of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) roots on the reproductive aspects in male Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

BACKGROUND: The Japanese quail is considered one of the most significant species in the poultry industry. However, the high male-to-female ratio results in the aggressive behavior of males. Dietary strategies that improve the properties of semen could reduce the number of males required to maintain optimal fertility and reduce aggressive behavior. Therefore, this study aims to provide insight into the possible improving efm fect of ginger roots on the reproductive aspects of Japanese male quails. RESULTS: To achieve this objective, powder of Ginger roots was administrated to 2 groups of quail

Effects of hypocretin-saporin injections into the medial septum on sleep and hippocampal theta.

Neurons containing the peptide hypocretin, also known as orexin, were recently implicated in the human sleep disorder narcolepsy. Hypocretin neurons are located only in the lateral hypothalamus from where they innervate virtually the entire brain and spinal cord. This peptide is believed to be involved in regulating feeding and wakefulness. However, to fully understand what other behaviors are regulated by this peptide it is necessary to investigate each hypocretin target site. In the present study, we focus on one hypocretin target site, the medial septum, where there is a dense collection of
