Footwraps as a Sock Alternative in Disaster Settings: Insights From Trench Foot Prevention.

OBJECTIVE: Trench foot develops after prolonged exposure of the feet to cold, wet conditions (e.g., during floods in cold climates), causing pain, swelling, and impaired gait. It can be prevented by maintaining dry feet and changing socks whenever they become wet. However, sock shortages are common in disaster settings. A practical alternative is cloth footwrapping. This study evaluated footwrap skill acquisition across different age groups and assessed the feasibility of footwraps as sock substitutes. METHODS: A total of 100 laypersons from four age groups completed 10 footwrapping trials. S…

Analysis of time-varying impact points in soccer kicking using curved foot geometry.

The impact phase in soccer kicking, while extremely brief, determines both ball velocity and rotation. Quantifying the moment governing this rotation requires precise, time-resolved identification of the impact point; however, a robust methodology has not yet been established. This study developed a more accurate approach to determine the impact point by incorporating the curved geometry of the foot's impact area, enabling comprehensive calculation of mechanical variables of ball motion. To capture foot surface geometry under static conditions, 105 reflective markers were applied at high densi…

New Surgical Technique for Cleft Hand and Foot Using a Lateral Pantaloon Flap.

Various surgical techniques for cleft hand closure have been reported. Cleft closure aims to improve cosmetic appearance, and the form of interdigital spaces should be drawn closer to normal. Further innovations are required to reconstruct natural interdigital contours. The pantaloon flap used in syndactyly surgery provides a natural interdigital formation. We focused on this aspect and used the pantaloon flap as a lateral stem for cleft hand closure. This technique was applied in 3 cases of cleft hand (4 hands) and 2 cases of cleft foot (2 feet), classified as Manske types I, IIA, III, and IV…

Mechanistic role of lipid metabolism in foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) replication.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious animal disease caused by foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), primarily affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as swine, cattle, and sheep. As a core metabolic pathway for maintaining cellular homeostasis, lipid metabolism is frequently hijacked by viruses via metabolic reprogramming mechanisms to support their infection cycle. Studies have demonstrated that positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses can reshape the host cell membrane system and modulate the lipid metabolic network, thereby constructing a favorable microenvironment for their in…

Calcaneonavicular ligament in early and flexible progressive foot deformity: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (PCFD), a multifactorial disorder, involves the synergistic failure of dynamic restraints, primarily the posterior tibial tendon (PTT), and static restraints, chiefly the calcaneonavicular ligament (SL). The necessity of routinely reconstructing the SL complex in the early, flexible stages of the disease is a significant clinical debate. To clarify this, this study aimed to assess whether measurable macro-structural changes, specifically alterations in the ultrasonographic thickness of the supramedial fasciculus of the calcaneonav…

Foot segments motion during uneven terrain walking and influence on lower limb biomechanics.

Human locomotion has been extensively studied on flat ground; however, everyday walking often occurs on uneven terrain, which poses additional biomechanical challenges. The role of foot segmental mobility under these conditions remains underexplored. This study investigated how irregular surfaces influence foot kinematics and lower-limb biomechanics. Twelve able-bodied young adults performed eight barefoot tasks at self-selected speed, including level walking, obstacle crossing and walking on uneven ground. Multi-segment foot kinematics was quantified using the Oxford Foot Model, while hip, kn…

An AI-driven framework for diabetic foot ulcer classification, segmentation, and depth estimation.

Diabetic Foot Ulcers are a severe complication of diabetes that can lead to infection, amputation, and increased mortality, making timely and objective assessment essential. Conventional evaluation relies primarily on visual inspection and manual measurements, which are often subjective and inconsistent. This paper presents a comprehensive automated deep learning-based framework for DFU assessment that integrates classification, segmentation, relative depth estimation, and explainability. An EfficientNet-B0 model is employed for binary classification of ulcerated versus healthy skin. At the sa…

Surgical Technique of Endoscopic-Assisted Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon Transfer in Foot Drop.

The term "foot drop" is defined as the loss of active dorsiflexion at the tibiotalar joint. Surgical procedures such as tendon transfer may be considered in patients who have had foot drop for more than a year. The most commonly reported tendon transfer in the treatment of drop foot is the tibialis posterior tendon. In cases where the tibialis posterior tendon is non-functional, transfer of one of the non-standard tendons such as FHL tendon to the dorsum of the foot is performed. In the presented case, the surgical technique of endoscopic transfer of the FHL tendon was illustrated. The patient…

Engineering the "pro-healing niche": Hydrogel-driven immunometabolic reprogramming for diabetic foot ulcers.

The refractory nature of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) stems from persistent immunometabolic dysregulation. Although a myriad of reviews have extensively categorized hydrogel dressings, most remain confined to passive material classifications and isolated phenotypic targets. To bridge this gap, this review delineates an integrated "hydrogel engineering-immunometabolic regulation-tissue regeneration" framework. We redefine hydrogels as "intelligent bioreactors" that actively construct a "pro-healing niche," dissecting the underlying mechano-metabolic crosstalk (e.g., VASP/HIF-1α and mTOR signalin…
