Fetal Growth Restriction with Brain Sparing: Neurocognitive and Behavioral Outcomes at 12 Years of Age.

OBJECTIVE: To study neurocognitive functions and behavior in children with a history of fetal growth restriction (FGR) with brain sparing. We hypothesized that children with FGR would have poorer outcomes on these domains. STUDY DESIGN: Subjects were 12-year-old children with a history of FGR born to mothers with severe early-onset hypertensive pregnancy disorders (n = 96) compared with a normal functioning full term comparison group with a birth weight ≥2500 g (n = 32). Outcome measures were neurocognitive outcomes (ie, intelligence quotient, executive function, attention) and behavior. RES

Stunting is associated with blood lead concentration among Bangladeshi children aged 2-3 years.

BACKGROUND: Lead toxicity is of particular public health concern given its near ubiquitous distribution in nature and established neurotoxicant properties. Similar in its ubiquity and ability to inhibit neurodevelopment, early childhood stunting affects an estimated 34 % of children under 5 in low- and middle-income countries. Both lead and stunting have been shown to be associated with decreased neurodevelopment, although the relationship between these childhood burdens is underexplored. The association between lead exposure and stunting has been previously established, yet limited data are a

Chiari I malformation as part of the Floating-Harbor syndrome?

We report the first case of a patient diagnosed with Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) and Chiari I malformation. The 3-year-old girl was of proportional short stature, had delay of language development, conductive hearing loss and a high threshold of pain. Diagnosis of Chiari I malformation may be difficult in FHS patients who present with communication problems. Clinicians following patients with FHS should be aware of a possible relation between FHS and Chiari I malformation.

Seckel syndrome with asymptomatic tonsillar herniation and congenital mirror movements.

Seckel syndrome is a rare genetic disorder of recessive inheritance characterized by prenatal-onset growth retardation, abnormally small head, varying degrees of mental retardation and an unusual ''beak-like'' protrusion of the nose. Additionally, it is associated with multiple organ system anomalies, including that of the central nervous system. An 8-year-old male child with typical features of Seckel syndrome and asymptomatic cerebellar tonsillar herniation diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging associated with congenital mirror movements of the upper extremities is described. The child, ad

Management of pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease in children is associated with complications that require nursing interventions in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Given the progressive nature of the disease and the complexity of the treatment regimen, it is important that nurses be comfortable implementing acute and preventive care strategies and facilitating the coordination of care. In addition, the need for multiple therapies can be distressing for patients and theirfamilies, further supporting the role of the nurse in patient and family education and decision making regarding the plan of care. In this

Growth and nutrition of children with chronic renal failure.

It has long been recognized that chronic renal failure (CRF) in children is associated with growth delay. Still In our days nevertheless, growth retardation remains today a major impediment to the full rehabilitation of children with CRF. The reduction of in height velocity frequently results in diminished final adult height. Available evidence suggests that growth retardation might be the result of late referral and/or suboptimal clinical care in children with CRF. Management of malnutrition, renal osteodystrophy, metabolic acidosis, salt wasting and anemia should be optimal before recombinan

Menstrual cycle effects on hypothalamic dopamine receptor function in women with a history of puerperal bipolar disorder.

Neuroendocrine challenge tests of hypothalamic dopamine receptor function in the early postpartum period suggest that the sensitivity of these receptors is increased in women with a history of bipolar disorder after childbirth. We tested the hypothesis that, in women predisposed to bipolar disorder in the puerperium, hypothalamic dopamine receptor function is more sensitive to changes in circulating ovarian hormone concentrations than in women without such histories. Eight fully recovered and drug-free women who had had at least one episode of bipolar illness following childbirth were compared

Ascaris and Trichuris do not contribute to growth retardation in primary school children.

To access the effectiveness of the treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) on the growth of primary school children, 353 children were block stratified to receive either mebendazole plus pyrantel oxantel pamoate every three months or a placebo. The children were followed for two years with 89% completing the trial. Follow-up stools indicated that the treatment was efficacious for ascariasis and trichuriasis. There was virtually no hookworm infection. The children were malnourished as measured by the number below -2 SD of height and weight standards. There was no difference in height

Ocular manifestations of genetic and developmental diseases.

Significant advances were reported this year in our understanding of the association of lens opacities with neurofibromatosis type 2 and the genetics of the aniridia-Wilms' tumor association. The first successful surgical reattachment of detached retinas in patients with incontinentia pigmenti are reported. An important retrospective review of young adults with congenital rubella syndrome implies that the timing of infection during gestation is not related to the incidence of individual ocular conditions. The ophthalmic features of the MELAS syndrome, a mitochondrially inherited encephalomyopa

Fatal familial cholestatic syndrome in Greenland Eskimo children.

A syndrome of intrahepatic cholestasis leading to death in early childhood was studied in 16 Greenland Eskimo children. The pedigrees are compatible with autosomal recessive inheritance. Jaundice, bleeding, pruritus, malnutrition, steatorrhoea, osteodystrophy and dwarfism were typical clinical features. Eight had died between the ages of six weeks and three years due to bleeding or infections. Hyperbilirubinaemia, profound hypoprothrombinaemia, thrombocytosis and elevated alkaline phosphatase levels were evident. Serum calcium, phosphate and parathyroid hormone levels indicated a secondary hyp

Bradypneic, a new mutation in mice causing slow breathing, runting, and early death.

A new recessive mutation, bradypneic (bd), causes variable weight retardation beginning as early as 3 to 5 days. Severely affected mice die within the first 2 weeks; less severely affected mice may survive to weaning or to adulthood and may be fertile. Bradypneic mice tested at 3 weeks or older breathed at half the normal rate, but breathing was deeper and O2 consumption per unit of body surface was normal. No obstruction was found in the nasal passages, pharynx, trachea, or bronchi. The lungs were somewhat emphysematous and, probably in consequence, the right atrium was enlarged. The only oth

The consequences of ultra-processed foods on brain development during prenatal, adolescent and adult stages.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are highly refined formulations of non-nutritive compounds containing elevated amounts of sugar, fat, sodium, food additives, and dietary emulsifiers. Consumption of UPF is robustly linked to a range of non-communicable diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental disorders in adults. While substantial research highlights the negative health impacts of UPFs in adulthood, their effects on brain development during critical periods of biological vulnerability, pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence, remain underexplored. During pregn

Clinical and molecular overlap between nucleotide excision repair (NER) disorders and DYRK1A haploinsufficiency syndrome.

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) disorders are genetic conditions caused by defects in the pathway responsible for repairing DNA lesions due to UV radiation. These defects lead to a variety of heterogeneous disorders, including Cockayne syndrome (CS) and trichothiodystrophy (TTD). In this study, we report 11 patients initially suspected of having CS or TTD who were ultimately diagnosed with DYRK1A haploinsufficiency syndrome using high-throughput sequencing. Comparing clinical presentations, we observed that DYRK1A symptoms overlapped with CS, with shared features such as intellectual disabili
