OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of thumb polydactyly with symphalangism in children.
METHODS: Seven cases of thumb polydactyly with symphalangism were treated between January 2013 and May 2017. There were 5 males and 2 females, aged from 10 months to 11 years, with an average age of 3.1 years. The thumb-polydactyly was diagnosed with MRI and it was seen that the base of radial multi-finger and the proximal phalangeal joint were connected by cartilage. All patients were treated with resection, lateral collateral ligament reconstruction, bone osteotomy and internal fixatio

IntroductionCentral Cord Syndrome (CCS) is the most common of the spinal cord injury syndromes. Few cases have been presented with gunshot wound (GSW) as a cause of a central cord syndrome, and none, to our knowledge, has been presented without any evidence of central canal bullet/bone fragments.Case presentationA 27-year-old male suffered two close-range gunshot wounds, one to the left neck and one to the left shoulder. CT scan showed C5 spinous process fracture and paraspinal muscle hemorrhage without evidence of central canal stenosis or bullet/bone fragments. Physical examination showed se

Pierre-Robin sequence, radial deviation, and ulnar clinodactyly of the index fingers due to an additional phalangeal bone, as well as heart defects are the key features of Catel-Manzke syndrome. Although mutations in TGDS were identified as the cause of this disorder, the pathogenetic mechanism remains unknown. Here, we report on a fetus with severe heart defect, nuchal edema, talipes, Pierre-Robin sequence, and bilateral deviation and clinodactyly of the index and middle fingers. Pregnancy was terminated at the 22nd week of gestation. Postmortem radiographs showed hypoplasia and V-shaped disp

BACKGROUND: Multiple reconstruction techniques have been described in the management of chronic scapholunate (SL) instability, either based on the capsulodesis or tenodesis principle. It is uncertain which surgical method produces the best patient outcomes. We describe results of a technique using palmaris longus (PL) tendon for surgical reconstruction of the SL ligament and provide functional outcomes scores.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We surgically reconstructed the SL ligament using a PL tendon graft secured with Mitek® bone anchors. Surgical technique with photographs is provided in the main

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stem cell technology offers a new hope for many chronic disorders patients. The types of stem cells are different with many differences existing between each type. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent one type of adult stem cells that can be easily isolated, then re-transplanted to the patients. This offers potential for their future application in treating many disorders without fear of rejection possibility. MSCs can be isolated from different sources e.g. bone marrow (BMSCs) and adipose tissue (ADSCs). In the present study we compared BMSCs and ADSCs isolated f

CONTEXT: Morgagni-Stewart-Morel syndrome is defined as the presence of hyperostosis frontalis interna, variably associated with metabolic, endocrine, and neuropsychiatric disorders. The possible cause-effect relationship of these associations remains uncertain.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman presented with severe frontal headache and a history of psychotic disorders. On instrumental examination she was found to have extensive frontal hyperostosis and cortical atrophy. These findings, associated to the metabolic and neuropsychiatric pattern of the patient, are consistent with a high pe

Magnesium containing compounds present promising oral phosphate binders for the treatment of hyperphosphataemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the impact of magnesium in CKD patients still remains unclear in clinical routine practice. Therefore, this publication provides a practicable overview of knowledge about the physiological role of magnesium in general and in particular in CKD patients. Prevalence of hypomagnesaemia is high in the general population and especially in intensive care unit patients, but often not being detected. Magnesium deficiency increases the ri

OBJECTIVE: To present the ultrasound and molecular genetic diagnosis of thanatophoric dysplasia type II (TD2).
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old, primigravid woman was referred to our institution for genetic counseling and amniocentesis at 19 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age and sonographic abnormalities in the fetus. The prenatal ultrasound showed short straight femurs, prominent forehead, narrow chest, skin edema, short limbs, and cloverleaf skull consistent with the diagnosis of TD2. Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 46,XX. DNA testing for the FGFR3 gene using uncultured am

Hypoxia-inducible transcription factor-1 (HIF-1α) is overexpressed in multiple myeloma (MM) cells within the hypoxic microenvironment. Herein, we explored the effect of persistent HIF-1α inhibition by a lentivirus short hairpin RNA pool on MM cell growth either in vitro or in vivo and on the transcriptional and pro-angiogenic profiles of MM cells. HIF-1α suppression did not have a significant impact on MM cell proliferation and survival in vitro although, increased the antiproliferative effect of lenalidomide. On the other hand, we found that HIF-1α inhibition in MM cells downregulates the pro

Patients with wrist pain commonly present with an acute injury or spontaneous onset of pain without a definite traumatic event. A fall onto an outstretched hand can lead to a scaphoid fracture, which is the most commonly fractured carpal bone. Conventional radiography alone can miss up to 30 percent of scaphoid fractures. Specialized views (e.g., posteroanterior in ulnar deviation, pronated oblique) and repeat radiography in 10 to 14 days can improve sensitivity for scaphoid fractures. If a suspected scaphoid fracture cannot be confirmed with plain radiography, a bone scan or magnetic resonanc

INTRODUCTION: Cranial aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare pathological finding that is usually diagnosed in young patients. It is defined as a benign lesion made up of intervillous spaces limited by connective bone tissue septa and osteoclast-type giant cells; these histological characteristics are common to extracranial ABC. Clinically, in most patients, they manifest as cranial tumours which may be painful and vary in size. About 100 cases of cranial ABC have been reported in the literature. We present a literature review of the cases of frontal ABC reported to date, including one that was

This study presents a novel algorithm to measure joint space widths (JSWs) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using radiographic hand images. Radiographic images were first preprocessed, and then phalangeal regions corresponding to the bone structures of each finger were extracted using step-wedge functions. Phalangeal branch paths were also extracted. Each of the five extracted phalangeal branch paths matched the bone structures of each finger exactly and ran through the center of each finger. The algorithm automatically detected 14 joints, which were identified as sharp changes in gr

To evaluate the outcomes of endoscopic LASER assisted dacryocystorhinostomy without stenting, a total of 39 patients (41 eyes) with complains of epiphora and diagnosed with nasolacrimal duct obstruction were included in a prospective study. All the patients had the same preoperative assessment, including radiological and ophthalmologic evaluation, with repeated lacrimal washouts, to confirm the postsacal obstruction. The surgical technique's goal was to create a wide opening of the medial wall of the sac, using drilling of the frontal process of the maxillary bone and some of the lacrimal bone

Cemented total knee arthroplasty (TKA), using mechanically sound components such as the total condylar system (Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, New Jersey), have been performed for >25 years. Long-term follow-up studies have shown excellent durability. In 1 series with a minimum 20-year follow-up, the revision rate for aseptic loosening was 3.5%. More contemporary prostheses, such as the low contact stress rotating platform (DePuy, Warsaw, Indiana) and Kinematic Knee systems (Howmedica, Rutherford, New Jersey), have demonstrated minimal loosening at 20-year follow-up. In a minimum 20-year fol

The treatment of osteoporotic patients with teriparatide is associated with a significant increase in bone formation and gain of bone mass. The purpose of this post hoc analysis was to determine if the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the spinal canal and the vertebral body is affected by teriparatide treatment. Narrowing of the spinal canal might represent a safety problem, while widening of the vertebral CSA might improve mechanical stability. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans of vertebra T12 were obtained at baseline and after 6, 12, and 24 months of teriparatide treatment (20 m

Hydroxyapatite cement is an ideal alloplastic material to replace the autogenous bone grafts in craniofacial surgery. Hydroxyapatite cement is advantageous because it can be easily molded by hand unlike other alloplastic materials such as silicone and high-density polyethylene. For aesthetic applications of hydroxyapatite cement, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of the rapidly hardening hydroxyapatite cement used in facial contour augmentation, especially for the forehead and the malar area. A total of 18 cases of facial skeleton augmentation or contouring surgery using rapidly hardening h

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the historical origins of the current middle fossa (MF) approach to the cerebellopontine angle (CPA).
METHODS: A review of more than 30 original articles from the 1880 s to the early 1960s that document the evolution of the MF approach. Historically important journal articles and book chapters in various languages were supplemented by interviews with surgeons instrumental in the adaptation of this method to modern microsurgical neurotology.
RESULTS: The inspiration for the current MF approach could be traced back to the late 19th century extradural subtemporal surg
