We observed the repair process of the choriocapillaris after confluent argon laser retinal photocoagulation in the domestic cat with a plastic injection-corrosion technique coupled with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Confluent photocoagulation was applied to the area of the retinal tapetum, creating two kinds of lesions: one consisted of five confluent burns and the other of 20 confluent burns. Of 52 eyes treated with argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) 49 were considered to be well controlled after treatment. At the one year follow-up of these latter eyes 7 showed either a high IOP (greater than 22 mmHg), in spite of medical treatment (4 eyes), or progression in visual field defects (3 eyes). No further deterioration was seen when 35 eyes were re-examined at 18 months. There were no serious complications that could be attributed with certainty to ALT. Rapidly healing corneal burns, previously not systematically studied, were noticed in 80% of the eyes.

The present paper reports the first results with the Meditec OPL-3 neodymium:YAG laser (Rodenstock, Munich). The YAG laser is a pulsed laser, the biological effects of which are based on the formation of plasma at its focal point. Plasma formation induces a rapid explosion-like expansion of the tissue. The clinical and laboratory findings were examined of 10 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with a first applied technique of intravenous irradiation of the circulating blood with helium-neon laser combined with external irradiation of the inflamed joints. A distinct antiinflammatory and immunosuppressant effect was attained in all the RA patients. In 80% of the test subjects, the rheumatoid blood factor reduced to 1:20 titres. The treatment method did not cause any side effects or complications and shortened the time of the patients' stay at hospital.

The authors report on the neodymium-YAG laser used after extracapsular cataract extraction with the implantation of a posterior chamber lens in 1726 patients. The most common indication was capsular fibrosis necessitating posterior capsulotomy. The alternative to the YAG laser would be a bulbus-opening procedure via pars plana using a Sato knife. The advantage of the YAG laser in comparison with capsulotomy with a Sato knife is that there is no danger of intraocular infection or bleeding (which may result from tension on the fibers with the first method). Condyloma acuminata of the anal margin or anal canal raise therapeutic problems as soon as they become important. Two groups of patients recently underwent either laser or conventional conization at the University Women's Hospital in Bern, Switzerland.
