A trifactor model for integrating ratings across multiple informants.

Psychologists often obtain ratings for target individuals from multiple informants such as parents or peers. In this article we propose a trifactor model for multiple informant data that separates target-level variability from informant-level variability and item-level variability. By leveraging item-level data, the trifactor model allows for examination of a single trait rated on a single target. In contrast to many psychometric models developed for multitrait-multimethod data, the trifactor model is predominantly a measurement model. It is used to evaluate item quality in scale development,

Recognition memory and the medial temporal lobe: from monkey research to human pathology.

This review provides a historical overview of decades of research on recognition memory, the process that allows both humans and animals to tell familiar from novel items. The emphasis is put on how monkey research improved our understanding of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) role and how tasks designed for monkeys influenced research in humans. The story starts in the early 1950s. Back then, memory was not a fashionable scientific topic. It was viewed as a function of the whole brain and not of specialized brain areas. All that changed in 1957-1958 when Brenda Milner, a neuropsychologist from

Stress, serotonin, and hippocampal neurogenesis in relation to depression and antidepressant effects.

Chronic stressful life events are risk factors for developing major depression, the pathophysiology of which is strongly linked to impairments in serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission. Exposure to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) has been found to induce depressive-like behaviours, including passive behavioural coping and anhedonia in animal models, along with many other affective, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms. The heterogeneity of these symptoms represents the plurality of corticolimbic structures involved in mood regulation that are adversely affected in the disorder. Chronic stress ha

A three-phase model of the social emotional functioning in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Problems with social emotional functioning are an important part of eating disorder psychopathology. AIM: This study aimed to propose a model of social emotional functioning before and during the illness and to explain the consequences for those involved. METHOD: We propose a three-phase model of social and emotional processes as both causal and maintaining factors in anorexia nervosa. The predictions from this model are examined, and we consider the relevance for treatment. RESULTS: The evidence base for the theoretical model is presented: Phase 1 describes causal predispositio

[Cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety disorders].

It is necessary to take the psychological characteristics of anxiety into account when we consider the improvement of anxiety. Anxiety is generally observed basic emotion in human and never extinguishable. Therefore, it is important for patients with anxiety disorders to learn how to manage their daily anxious responses, even after their pathological anxiety is successfully treated and improved. Considering these points, comprehensive psychological treatment, including not only effective intervention to pathological anxiety but also anxiety management program, is needed in treating anxiety dis

The role of independent motion in object segmentation in the ventral visual stream: Learning to recognise the separate parts of the body.

This paper investigates how the visual areas of the brain may learn to segment the bodies of humans and other animals into separate parts. A neural network model of the ventral visual pathway, VisNet, was used to study this problem. In particular, the current work investigates whether independent motion of body parts can be sufficient to enable the visual system to learn separate representations of them even when the body parts are never seen in isolation. The network was shown to be able to separate out the independently moving body parts because the independent motion created statistical dec

Introduction to a theoretical model based on embodied cognition: a pilot study of the diagnosis and treatment of hemiphobia.

PURPOSE: Neurorehabilitation programs have traditionally followed the mind-body dichotomy proposed by Descartes, which resulted in the creation of divergent theoretical frameworks. The purpose of this pilot study is to present a transdisciplinary proposal that integrates human experience via the embodied cognition concept, that is, to explore how the individual relates from their experiential totality. We illustrate this model with a case report: a woman with a physical imbalance caused by stroke, which we diagnose as an experiential disorder and we treat using a transdisciplinary approach. M

Punishment sustains large-scale cooperation in prestate warfare.

Understanding cooperation and punishment in small-scale societies is crucial for explaining the origins of human cooperation. We studied warfare among the Turkana, a politically uncentralized, egalitarian, nomadic pastoral society in East Africa. Based on a representative sample of 88 recent raids, we show that the Turkana sustain costly cooperation in combat at a remarkably large scale, at least in part, through punishment of free-riders. Raiding parties comprised several hundred warriors and participants are not kin or day-to-day interactants. Warriors incur substantial risk of death and pro

Dissociation in trauma: a new definition and comparison with previous formulations.

Amid controversy regarding the psychobiological construct of dissociation, efforts to formulate a precise definition of dissociation are rare. Some understandings of dissociation are so broad that a host of common psychobiological phenomena would qualify as dissociative. Overly narrow conceptualizations of dissociation exclude phenomena that originally, and for good reasons, have been regarded as dissociative. A common lack of conceptual distinctions between dissociation as process, organization, deficit, psychological defense, and symptom adds to the current confusion. In previous publication

The relationship between different measures of oral reading fluency and reading comprehension in second-grade students who evidence different oral reading fluency difficulties.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether different measures of oral reading fluency relate differentially to reading comprehension performance in two samples of second-grade students: (a) students who evidenced difficulties with nonsense-word oral reading fluency, real-word oral reading fluency, and oral reading fluency of connected text (ORFD), and (b) students who evidenced difficulties only with oral reading fluency of connected text (CTD). METHOD: Participants (ORFD, n = 146 and CTD, n = 949) were second-grade students who were recruited for participation in different rea

Developmental comorbidity in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

With the present review, we intend to highlight the importance of considering the age- and development-dependent occurrence of comorbidity in ADHD and to outline distinct trajectories of symptom progression with possible impact on course and outcome of ADHD. The review will focus on introducing the concepts of "developmental epidemiology" and "developmental comorbidity". Psychiatric and non-psychiatric age-dependent comorbidity can be seen in the majority of children, adolescents and adults with ADHD, resulting in a severe impairment of everyday life with considerable functional and psychosoci

Collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance: meta-analyses of their relationships, and test of a mediation model.

The authors examined relationships among collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance. Meta-analytic results (based on 6,128 groups, 31,019 individuals, 118 correlations adjusted for dependence, and 96 studies) reveal that collective efficacy was significantly related to group performance (.35). In the proposed nested 2-level model, collective efficacy assessment (aggregation and group discussion) was tested as the 1st-level moderator. It showed significantly different average correlations with group performance (.32 vs. .45), but the group discussion assessment was homogeneous, w

Immunopathogenic mechanisms in tourette syndrome: A critical review.

Tourette syndrome (TS) has a multifactorial etiology, in which genetic, environmental, immunological and hormonal factors interact to establish vulnerability. This review: (i) summarizes research exploring the exposure of TS patients to immune-activating environmental factors, and (ii) focuses on recent findings supporting a role of the innate and adaptive immune systems in the pathogenesis of TS and related disorders. A higher exposure prior to disease onset to group A beta-haemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) infections in children with tics and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms has been docume

[What clinicians expect from animal models of depression].

In depression research, animal models are essential for better understanding of biological mechanisms, development of new agents, and showing evidence on various theories. Given the emotional feature of the disorder, people have debated, even revolted, on applying animal models to human studies. However, this logic is counter-arguable by noting the commonality of biological changes (e.g., behavioral disorder, environment maladjustment, and stress vulnerability) between human and experimental animals; moreover, genetic studies suggest further similarities. However, current animal models are ins

Clinicians' understanding of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision diagnostic criteria: F62.0 enduring personality change after catastrophic experience.

International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) has included a diagnostic category of "enduring personality change after catastrophic experience" (EPCACE). Preliminary investigation suggests that there is considerable endorsement in principle for this new category among experts in the field of intentional human trauma, yet many aspects of the diagnosis remain contentious. Criticisms leveled at EPCACE raised issues that question the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of this diagnostic category. In ICD-10, there are 2 sets of doc

Effects of visual information and task constraints on intersegmental coordination in playground swinging.

The authors investigated how and to what extent visual information and associated task constraints are negotiated in the coordinative structure of playground swinging. Participants (N = 20) were invited to pump a swing from rest to a prescribed maximal amplitude under 4 conditions: normal vision, no vision, and 2 visual conditions involving explicit phasing constraints. In the latter conditions, participants were presented with a flow pattern consisting of a periodically expanding and contracting optical structure. They were instructed to phase the swing motion so that the forward turning poin

The emergence and treatment of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. A comprehensive and practical model.

UNLABELLED: The objective was to propose and describe a new bio-psycho-social model of emergence and maintenance of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and demonstrate its application to treatment. An original model, based on literature review and our own clinical experience, was created. Therapeutic guidelines were derived from the theoretical model and applied in the treatment of 97 anorexia and bulimia nervosa patients presented at the eating disorders unit at Kaplan Hospital in Israel over 18 months. A team comprising a pediatrician, a child psychiatrist, a dietician, and trained nurses

Outcomes and sample selection: the case of a homelessness and substance abuse intervention.

In the likely event that some clients refuse to participate in a psychosocial field experiment, the estimates of the effects of the experimental treatment on client outcomes may suffer from sample selection bias, regardless of whether the statistical analyses include control variables. This paper explores ways of correcting for this bias with advanced correction strategies, focusing on experiments in which clients refuse assignment into treatment conditions. The sample selection modelling strategy, which is highly recommended but seldom applied to random sample psychosocial experiments, and so

Atypical Charles Bonnet hallucinations: an elf in the woodshed, a spirit of evil, and the cowboy malefactors.

In this article, the authors review the literature on the Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS), a condition involving visual hallucinations in normal persons with severe sight loss. Attempts to assess the characteristics of this "phantom vision" have resulted in descriptions of a "typical" CBS hallucination. However, the many exceptions to a modal CBS experience cause the authors to postulate two other general categories of CBS hallucinations: a) the atypical sensory/perceptual (ASP), and b) the atypical psychodynamic (APD) hallucinations. Case studies illustrating these two types are provided. Exten

Shifts in perceived position following adaptation to visual motion.

Where do we perceive an object to be when it is moving? Nijhawan [1] has reported that if a stationary test pattern is briefly flashed in spatial alignment with a moving one, the moving element actually appears displaced in the direction in which it is moving. Nijhawan postulates that this may be the result of a mechanism that predicts the future position of the moving element so as to compensate for the fact that the element will have moved position from the time at which the light left it to the time at which the observer becomes aware of it (as a result of the finite time taken for neural t
