Repeated Sessions of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Study Protocol for a Randomized, Double-Blind, and Sham-Controlled Clinical Trial.

Background: Social-emotional difficulties are a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Accordingly, individuals with ASD have problems with social cognition such as recognizing emotions from other peoples' faces. Various results from functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography studies as well as eye-tracking data reveal a neurophysiological basis of these deficits by linking them to abnormal brain activity. Thus, an intervention targeting the neural origin of ASD impairments seems warranted. A safe method able to influence neural activity is transcranial direct cu

Are there shared neural correlates between dyslexia and ADHD? A meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry studies.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders (estimates of 25-40% bidirectional comorbidity). Previous work has identified strong genetic and cognitive overlap between the disorders, but neural overlap is relatively unexplored. This study is a systematic meta-analysis of existing voxel-based morphometry studies to determine whether there is any overlap in the gray matter correlates of both disorders. METHODS: We conducted anatomic likelihood estimate (ALE) meta-analyses of voxel-based morphometry studies in which ind

Investigating the neural origins of Ear-EEG: A correlation study using scalp EEG source reconstruction.

Ear electroencephalography (Ear-EEG) has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional scalp EEG, offering a noninvasive, discreet, and portable method for neural monitoring. While its ability to capture brain activity is established, the cortical origins of Ear-EEG signals remain unclear. It is uncertain whether these signals primarily reflect activity from nearby cortical regions or volume-conducted signals from distant areas. This study investigates the cortical sources of Ear-EEG signals and their relationship to neural activity across frequency bands, including alpha rhythms, sleep sp

Neural reward sensitivity and longitudinal patterns of alcohol and cannabis use in college-aged youth.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and cannabis are commonly used substances among adolescents, yet the neurobiological mechanisms that confer risk for alcohol and cannabis use disorder remain poorly understood. Abnormalities in neural reward processing have been implicated in the etiology of substance use disorders, but their predictive utility is unclear. Identifying such risk factors is critical for developing prevention and intervention strategies for high-risk youth. METHOD: We examined whether deficits in neural reward processing predicted changes in problematic alcohol and cannabis use symptoms in yo

No effect of rhythmic visual stimulation on experimental pain perception.

Brain oscillations, particularly in the alpha, beta, and gamma bands, have been implicated in pain perception through correlational studies. Rhythmic visual stimulation (RVS) offers a noninvasive method to experimentally manipulate these oscillations and examine their potential role in pain perception. We conducted 2 within-participant experiments to assess whether RVS is associated with changes in both acute pain perception and pain-related neural oscillations. In experiment 1, 41 participants received brief (13 seconds) RVS at alpha (10 Hz), beta (18 Hz), or gamma (42 Hz) frequencies, or an

How are grammatical and arithmetic processing related in the brain? An ALE meta-analysis.

Grammatical and arithmetic skills are consistently associated, but the nature of this relationship remains debated. On the one hand, it may be due to shared linguistic processes. On the other hand, it may also come from domain-general abilities involved in extracting and applying abstract structured rules. To address this question, we investigated the neural basis of the relation between grammatical and arithmetic processing by conducting an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of whole-brain fMRI studies of grammatical (n = 50 experiments) and arithmetic (n = 70 experiments) p

Characterization of dermatan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate profiles during brain regeneration in Styela plicata.

Neuroregeneration is the ability of nervous tissue to renew itself after injury. This process is highly limited in mammals. In contrast, marine chordates such as ascidians display a remarkable regenerative capacity, making them valuable models to understand neural regeneration. This study investigated dermatan sulfate (DS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) profiles during brain regeneration in the ascidian Styela plicata. Neurodegeneration was induced by 3-acetylpyridine (3-AP), after which neural complex (NC) analyses were conducted using histology, RT-qPCR, liquid chromatography, behavioral testi

The Effect of 5-in-1 Dextrose Neural Prolotherapy for Periscapular Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Retrospective Study.

Background and objective Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a chronic musculoskeletal condition characterized by the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) that cause localized and referred pain, often leading to functional impairments. Despite a multimodal therapeutic approach, some cases prove refractory to conservative management. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 5-in-1 dextrose neural prolotherapy injection targeting key muscles and nerves in the periscapular region among patients with chronic MPS. Methods A retrospective case series was conducted involving 16 pati

Atorvastatin Protects Against the Macrophage/Microglia-Related Neuroinflammation via Inhibiting Lipocalin-2 in Mouse Experimental Intracerebral Hemorrhage Model.

There are few effective pharmacological interventions for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Atorvastatin (Ato) has been shown to exert a substantial protective effect on ischemic stroke and is effective in alleviating neuroinflammation. Lipocalin-2 (LCN2), an important inflammation-regulating protein, has been demonstrated to play pivotal roles in post-ICH neuroinflammation. However, the exact role of Ato and whether LCN2 is involved after ICH remain largely unknown. In the current study, the BV2 (microglia) cell line, which was transfected with or without LCN2 for overexpression/interference, w

A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging meta-analysis of differences in brain activity between children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder using activation likelihood estimation.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that often persists from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) provides valuable insights into the intrinsic neural activity associated with ADHD. However, despite increasing neuroimaging research, the developmental specificity of spontaneous alterations in brain activity in children and adolescents with ADHD remains poorly understood. A comprehensive activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was performed on rs-fMRI data to inv

From Sound to Movement: Mapping the Neural Mechanisms of Auditory-Motor Entrainment and Synchronization.

BACKGROUND: Humans exhibit a remarkable ability to synchronize their actions with external auditory stimuli through a process called auditory-motor or rhythmic entrainment. Positive effects of rhythmic entrainment have been demonstrated in adults with neurological movement disorders, yet the neural substrates supporting the transformation of auditory input into timed rhythmic motor outputs are not fully understood. We aimed to systematically map and synthesize the research on the neural correlates of auditory-motor entrainment and synchronization. METHODS: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines

Pharmacological and Psychological Treatment Have Common and Specific Effects on Brain Activity in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Initial treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) consists of pharmacological treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and/or psychological treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The assumption is that both treatments have different neural working mechanisms, but empirical evidence is lacking. We investigated whether these treatments induce similar or different functional neural changes in OCD. We conducted a longitudinal nonrandomized controlled trial in which thirty-four OCD patients were treated with sixteen weeks of CBT or SSRIs. Functional magneti

Frequency-Specific Alternations in the Amplitude of Fluctuations in Tension-Type Headache: A Machine Learning Study.

Brain neural signal at different frequency bands relates to different functions. However, the frequency-specific properties of spontaneous brain activity in tension-type headache (TTH)-the most rampant primary headache-remain largely unknown. We investigated the local neural activity of 33 TTH patients and 31 healthy controls (HCs) in the conventional frequency band and two sub-frequency bands (slow-4 and slow-5 frequency band), employing fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), percent amplitude fluctuations (PerAF) and Wavelet-ALFF analytic methods. Using age as covariate,

Shaking up the silence: consequences of HMGN1 antagonizing PRC2 in the Down syndrome brain.

Intellectual disability is a well-known hallmark of Down Syndrome (DS) that results from the triplication of the critical region of human chromosome 21 (HSA21). Major studies were conducted in recent years to gain an understanding about the contribution of individual triplicated genes to DS-related brain pathology. Global transcriptomic alterations and widespread changes in the establishment of neural lineages, as well as their differentiation and functional maturity, suggest genome-wide chromatin organization alterations in trisomy.
