Influence of smoking, weight gain, and pregravid weight for height on intrauterine growth.

Combined effects of pregravid weight, weight gain and smoking on birth weight, length, and head circumference was investigated in uncomplicated, term pregnancies. Each gravida was categorized by height and pregravid weight as underweight, normal, moderately overweight, or massively overweight. Weight gain was grouped: poor, low-normal, high-normal, and excessive. Women who smoked 10 to 20 cigarettes daily were studied. Women who did not smoke were used as controls. Birth weights, lengths, and head circumferences were evaluated. Within each pregravid category and each gain group there was nearl…

Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Motivational Interviewing-Based Wellness Coaching for Kids and Families (WC4K) Program in Pediatric Obesity Care: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Pragmatic Trial.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of severe obesity among youth and the early onset of comorbidities highlight the urgent need for effective solutions to support behavior and lifestyle changes. Motivational interviewing (MI), a client-centered counseling technique, has shown promise in improving obesity-related outcomes and is now recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a key component of behavioral interventions for children with overweight and obesity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the design and baseline characteristics of the Wellness Coaching for Kids and Famil…

Association between body mass index and mortality in intensive care unit patients with sepsis: A retrospective cohort study.

The link between body mass index (BMI) and outcomes in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with sepsis is inconsistently supported by the available data. This study aimed to examine the association between BMI and mortality among ICU patients with sepsis. On the basis of their BMI values upon admission to the ICU, sepsis patients from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database were categorized as low weight, normal weight, overweight, or obesity group. The primary outcome measure was in-hospital mortality and the secondary outcome was 90-day mortality. Multivariable …

Risk Reclassification Beyond BMI by Waist Circumference and Waist-to-Hip Ratio Across 9 Cardiovascular Outcomes: Results From the Cross-Cohort Collaboration.

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to assess total adiposity, yet does not provide insight into overall body composition, potentially obscuring meaningful heterogeneity in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are surrogate measures of central adiposity that are commonly discordant with BMI and may provide additional prognostic information. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to quantify the reclassification and misclassification of traditional normal weight/overweight/obesity categories using central adiposity and to ev…

A longitudinal analysis of health inequalities from adolescence to young adulthood and their underlying causes.

Research suggests that children of low-educated parents face greater health burdens during the passage from adolescence to young adulthood, as they are more likely to become low-educated themselves, establish behavioural and psychosocial disadvantages, or being exposed to unhealthy working conditions. However, studies examining the development and drivers of health inequalities during this particular life stage are limited in number and have produced varied results. This study investigates trajectories of self-rated health and overweight from 14 to 25 years of age, stratified by parental educa…

Obesity at age 20 and weight gain during adulthood increase risk of total and premature all-cause mortality: findings from women attending breast screening in Manchester.

BACKGROUND: Obesity in early adulthood is associated with lower breast cancer rates in later life. This could be interpreted as a positive r … nopausal status, ethnicity, alcohol intake, physical activity, and BMI. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight (25-30 kg/m2) and obesity (> 30 kg/m2) were 10.4% and 2.5% respectively at 20 years, increasing to 35.2% and 25.9% respectively at cohort entry. After a mean 8.7 years follow-up we observed that overweight (HR = 1.27, 95%CI = 1.10-1.47) and obesity …

Underweight patients are the highest risk body mass index group for perioperative adverse events following stand-alone anterior lumbar interbody fusion.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Prior studies investigating the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and patient outcomes following spine surgery have had inconsistent conclusions, likely owing to insufficient power, confounding variables, and varying definitions and cutoffs for BMI categories (eg, underweight, overweight, obese, etc.). Further, few studies have considered outcomes among low BMI cohorts. PURPOSE: The current study analyzes how anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) perioperative outcomes vary along the BMI spectrum, using World Health Organization (WHO) categories of BMI. STUDY DE…

The Impact of Body Mass Index on Perioperative and Postoperative Outcomes for Endovascular Abdominal Aneurysm Repair.

BACKGROUND: There is varying evidence regarding the effects of body mass index (BMI) on outcomes of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). This study investigates the effects of BMI on an index of perioperative and postoperative outcomes after EVAR. METHODS: Four hundred ninety-two patients who underwent elective EVAR at Mount Sinai Hospital were included in this study. Patients were classified as either normal weight (BMI = 18.5-25), overweight (BMI = 25-30), or obese (BMI>30). Chi-squared tests were used to determine significant differences between weight classes across an index of outcomes. …

Effect of Aerobic and Resistance Exercise Intervention on Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Women With Early-Stage Breast Cancer: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The Framingham Risk Score (FRS) is a valid method for predicting the 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Higher FRS is reported in patients with early-stage breast cancer who are overweight than in healthy, age-matched women, but whether exercise reduces FRS in this patient population is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of a 16-week aerobic and resistance exercise intervention on the FRS in women with early-stage breast cancer and with overweight condition or obesity. [Cognitive impairment in patients with obesity and impaired carbohydrate metabolism (dysglycemia)].

Obesity is a chronic disease, heterogeneous in etiology and clinical manifestations, progressing with a natural course, characterized by exc … pidemia, malignant neoplasms and other associated pathological conditions against the background of overweight and obesity.Currently, the problem of the relationship of cognitive impairment in patients with overweight or changes in the glycemic profile is very relevant, due to the high prevalence and insufficient study of this issue.

Physical activity and obesity in children.

Globally, obesity is affecting an increasing proportion of children. Physical activity plays an important role in the prevention of becoming overweight and obese in childhood and adolescence, and reducing the risk of obesity in adulthood. Puberty and the following adolescent period are acknowledged as particularly vulnerable times for the development of obesity due to sexual maturation and, in many individuals, a concomitant reduction in physical activity. In many Western settings, a large proportion of children and adolescents do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines and, typicall…
