OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to examine the association between parental incarceration and parent-youth closeness.
BACKGROUND: Despite the established complex repercussions of incarceration for relationships between adults, and the well-known intergenerational consequences of parental incarceration, little is known about how incarceration structures these intergenerational relationships.
METHOD: In this paper, I use data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,408), a cohort of children followed over a 15-year period, to examine how parental incarceration is asso

Although parental overprotection is theorized to have lasting negative effects throughout a child's life, there is limited empirical evidence available on its long-term significance on adolescent well-being. This preregistered, three-wave longitudinal study investigated the association of maternal and paternal perceived overprotection in early adolescence with the development of (mal)adaptive psychological, academic, and social functioning throughout adolescence. Data (N = 2229; 50.7% girls) from the longitudinal TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS) in the Netherlands were us

The contribution of sperm to embryogenesis is gaining attention with up to 50% of infertility cases being attributed to a paternal factor. The traditional methods used in assisted reproductive technologies for selecting and assessing sperm quality are mainly based on motility and viability parameters. However, other sperm characteristics, including deoxyribonucleic acid integrity, have major consequences for successful live birth. In natural reproduction, sperm navigate the male and female reproductive tract to reach and fertilize the egg. During transport, sperm encounter many obstacles that

OBJECTIVE: We present molecular cytogenetic characterization of de novo concomitant proximal 21q deletion of 21q11.2q21.3 and distal Xp deletion of Xp22.33p22.2 due to an unbalanced X; 21 translocation detected by amniocentesis.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old, primigravid woman underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age. Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 45,X,der(X)t(X; 21) (p22.2; q21.3),-21. Simultaneous array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) revealed the result of an 11.9-Mb Xp22.33p22.2 deletion encompassing HCCS, SHOX, AMELX and OFD1 and a 1

DNA methylation is an important epigenetic modification factor in regulating fertility. Corresponding process remains poorly investigated in hermaphroditic scallops. The interspecific F1 hybrids between the hermaphroditic bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) and Peruvian scallops (Argopecten purpuratus) exhibited significant heterosis in yield, but sterility in hybrids obstructs the utilization of the genetic resources. However, the determination mechanism of hybrid sterility in the hermaphroditic Argopecten scallops is still unclear. In this study, the effect of DNA methylation in the hybrid s

The hypothalamus regulates fundamental aspects of physiological homeostasis and behavior, including stress response, reproduction, growth, sleep, and feeding, several of which are affected in patients with Prader-Willi (PWS) and Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS). PWS is caused by paternal deletion, maternal uniparental disomy, or imprinting defects that lead to loss of expression of a maternally imprinted region of chromosome 15 encompassing non-coding RNAs and five protein-coding genes; SYS patients have a mutation in one of them, MAGEL2. Throughout life, PWS and SYS patients suffer from musculoskel

The clinical syndrome caused by cleavage-resistant RIPK1 is known as CRIA (Cleavage-resistant RIPK1-induced autoinflammatory) syndrome. We present a family with three generations affected by CRIA syndrome. Our index patient (P1), a boy born of a non-consanguineous marriage, developed recurrent episodes of fever after 5 months of age, with variable periodicity. His father (P2) and paternal grandmother also had periodic fever. At 23 months of age, P1 was diagnosed with renal biopsy-proven steroid-responsive nephrotic syndrome. His first visit to our center was at 2 years of age. At presentation,

Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are characterized by abnormal vessels connecting arteries and veins resulting in a disruption of normal blood flow. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is the most common cause of pulmonary AVM characterized by a right to left shunt. Here we describe a distinct malformation where the flow of blood was from a systemic artery to the pulmonary artery (PA) resulting in a left to right shunt instead of the right to left shunt seen in individuals with HHT. This distinct malformation was identified in seven probands, one from a multiplex family containing 10

BACKGROUND: Parenting is a common and potent environmental factor influencing adolescent anxiety. Yet, the underlying neurobiological susceptibility signatures remain elusive. Here, we used a longitudinal twin neuroimaging study to investigate the brain network integration and its heritable relation to underpin the neural differential susceptibility of adolescent anxiety to parenting environments.
METHODS: 216 twins from the Beijing Twin Study completed the parenting and anxiety assessments and fMRI scanning. We first identified the brain network integration involved in the influences of pare

Immunological recognition of the fetus is the prerequisite of successful pregnancy. Decidualization enables the formation of embryo-competent tissue environment. The decidua is an independent organ performing endocrine and immunological function. On the other hand, the embryo itself is also an active participant of fertilization through the strictly regulated bidirectional communication between embryonic and maternal tissues. Immunological properties of fetomaternal interface dynamically change and pregnancy can be characterized by immunological stages. Chronology of pregnancy may be represent

Heterozygous loss-of-function variants in the PKD1 gene are commonly associated with adult-onset autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), where the formation of renal cysts depends on the dosage of the PKD1 gene. Biallelic null PKD1 variants are not viable, but biallelic hypomorphic variants could lead to early-onset PKD. We report a non-consanguineous Chinese family with recurrent fetal polycystic kidney and negative findings in the coding region of the PKHD1 gene or chromosomal microarray analysis. Trio exome analysis revealed compound heterozygous variants of uncertain signific

Tongue reduction surgery is often pursued to manage the adverse effects of macroglossia in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). This study characterized dental outcomes in patients with BWS based on surgical timing and molecular diagnosis. A retrospective study was designed to include patients with BWS over the age of two who had clinical or radiographic documentation of dental development. Patients were grouped by history of tongue reduction surgery and surgical timing (early: <12 months). One hundred three patients were included (55 no tongue reduction, 18 early, 30 late). Patien

Down syndrome (DS, trisomy 21) with an extra copy of chromosome 21 is one of the most common aneuploidies in humans. Jacobs syndrome or XYY syndrome (trisomy XYY) with an extra copy of sex chromosome Y is a rare sex chromosome trisomy in males. Double aneuploidy (DA) with an extra copy of chromosome 21 and sex chromosome Y is an extremely rare occurrence. Most trisomy 21 results from nondisjunction during maternal oocyte meiosis-I, whereas trisomy XYY is results from nondisjunction during paternal spermatocyte meiosis-I. We present a case of natural conception premature newborn of 30.4 weeks g

Fahr's disease, or primary familial brain calcification (PFBC), is a rare genetic neurologic disease characterized by abnormal calcification of the basal ganglia, subcortical white matter and cerebellum. Common clinical features include parkinsonism, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive decline. Genes implicated in Fahr's disease include PDGFB, PDGFRB, SLC20A2, XPR1, MYORG, and JAM2. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman who developed subacute cognitive and behavioral changes primarily affecting frontal-subcortical pathways and parkinsonism in association with extensive bilateral calc

Ciliopathies are a group of genetic disorders caused by ciliary dysfunction. Thirty-five distinct multi-organ phenotypes have been recognized, with 187 genes associated. We performed a literature review of pancreatic involvement in ciliopathies and found that pancreatic disease is an uncommon phenotype described in only a handful of these genetic disorders. We present a case report of a pediatric patient with WDR19-related ciliopathy whose degree of pancreatic disease exceeds what has previously been reported in the literature for WDR19-related ciliopathies. WDR19 is one member of the nephrono

Animal personality can affect individual fitness and population growth. Personality traits of either parent or parents' combination may facilitate reproduction and offspring survival across species. However, previous studies focused mainly on the role of only one sex, and the link between personality and fitness has not been confirmed in primates. We examined this link in both sexes of captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), a cooperatively breeding primate with extensive paternal care. We studied the effects of five personality traits of the parents (Agreeableness, Assertiveness, Consc

Having its genome makes the mitochondrion a unique and semiautonomous organelle within cells. Mammalian mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a double-stranded closed circular molecule of about 16 kb coding for 37 genes. Mutations, including deletions in the mitochondrial genome, can culminate in different human diseases. Mapping the deletion junctions suggests that the breakpoints are generally seen at hotspots. '9 bp deletion' (8271-8281), seen in the intergenic region of cytochrome c oxidase II/tRNALys, is the most common mitochondrial deletion. While it is associated with several diseases like myop

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive characteristics common to autistic individuals are often seen in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN), raising the question of whether autistic people and people with AN may share an endophenotype. We need to examine autistic characteristics during the early stages of AN to accurately parse true symptom co-occurrence from behavioural alterations due to prolonged illness.
METHODS: We conducted a post-hoc analysis examining autistic characteristics in 59 youth with AN. Adolescents and parents participating in a randomised-clinical trial for AN completed questionnaires probing
