[Transitional psychiatry in Switzerland: Results of the first-year follow-up of 187 patients after the establishment of the transitional psychiatric department at St. Urban Clinic in Lucerne].

INTRODUCTION: The structural separation of child and adolescent psychiatric care from adult psychiatric care necessitates a transition between the two systems when patients reach the age of majority. In order to facilitate an orderly transition, St. Urban Clinic in Lucerne opened a department for transitional psychiatry in November 2023. The department provides treatment for patients aged 16 to 25 from the cantons of Lucerne, Nidwalden, and Obwalden. In this study, an analysis was conducted on the treatment courses of the first-year cohort. The results are intended to support quality assurance

Mental disorder trajectories and quality of life among youth residential care leavers: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adults formerly placed out-of-home (care leavers) often accumulate multiple psychosocial adversities that can lead to poor quality of life (QoL) and place them at high risk for developing mental disorders persisting into adulthood. This study examines the development of mental disorders among care leavers and their QoL, differentiating by disorder groups. METHODS: The sample consisted of 119 young adults formerly placed out-of-home (Mage at baseline = 15.0 years; Mage at follow-up = 25.4 years). Mental disorders were assessed at baseline using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Dis

Borderline personality disorder Athens study: a quasi-experimental pragmatic trial for the assessment of a public, psychodynamic, stepped care service for borderline personality disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common mental disorder that severely impairs patients' psychosocial functioning and quality of life and results in prolonged use of health services. Although psychotherapy is recommended as the most effective treatment for patients with BPD, their complex emotional needs can be met in everyday clinical practice by developing integrative, holistic, personalized mental health services tailored to their needs. AIM AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a specialized psychodynamic stepped-care service for BP

Investigating feelings of imposterism in first-year medical student narratives.

INTRODUCTION: Imposter phenomenon (IP), feeling as if a person does not belong, has been reported in medical students at various rates. In medical literature, this phenomenon has often been defined as a 'syndrome', but other studies have described it as a dynamic experience that can have various impacts on different people at different time points. Although studies have linked IP with other phenomena such as burnout in residents and physicians, no studies have examined its aetiology nor how these feelings are experienced by medical students. METHODS: With the use of social identity theory as

Understanding attitudes and beliefs regarding COVID-19 vaccines among transitional-aged youth with mental health concerns: a youth-led qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Transitional-aged youth (16-29 years) with mental health concerns have experienced a disproportionate burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccination is limited in this population; however, determinants of its vaccine hesitancy are not yet thoroughly characterised. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to answer the following research question: What are the beliefs and attitudes of youth with mental illness about COVID-19 vaccines, and how do these perspectives affect vaccine acceptance? The study aims to generate findings to inform the development of vaccine resources specific to youth with

A realist review of medication optimisation of community dwelling service users with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Severe mental illness (SMI) incorporates schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, non-organic psychosis, personality disorder or any other severe and enduring mental health illness. Medication, particularly antipsychotics and mood stabilisers are the main treatment options. Medication optimisation is a hallmark of medication safety, characterised by the use of collaborative, person-centred approaches. There is very little published research describing medication optimisation with people living with SMI. OBJECTIVE: Published literature and two stakeholder groups were employed to answer: Wh

Family Dynamics and Functioning of Adolescents from Two-Child and One-Child Families in China.

BACKGROUND: To promote the balanced development with the population, China has phased out a one-child policy in 2016, and a two-child policy was launched, which has led to dramatic changes in family structure. The transition could be a huge challenge for adolescents who are in a period of psychological vulnerability. PURPOSE: This study explored the differences and predictors of family dynamics and functioning between two-child and one-child families in the context of China's two-child policy. METHODS: We used the Self-rating scale of Systemic Family Dynamics (SSFD) and Family Assessment Dev

The Illness Trajectory in Marilyn Monroe's Psychological Autopsy: From Autism Spectrum Disorder to Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder with Catatonia.

OBJECTIVE: A mounting body of literature is showing that, in the clinical and general population, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autistic traits (ATs) would appear to be spread along a continuum, reaching the highest levels among individuals affected by other mental disorders, such as borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Furthermore, individuals with ASD or ATs appear to be more vulnerable to psychological traumas, with greater likelihood of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and BD. Marilyn Monroe was a famous actress, singer and model, as well as

Frequency of and Factors Associated with the Presence of a History of Probable Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a Population of Patients with Sex Addiction.

INTRODUCTION: Since the first description of sex addiction (SA) by Carnes, research on this problematic behaviour has continued to grow, and the association with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) appears to be frequent. This study aimed to estimate the frequency of a history of probable ADHD in a population of patients with SA and to explore the factors associated with it. METHODS: One hundred 85 patients referred to the Nantes University Hospital for SA between 2011 and 2020 were included. Patients completed the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST) or its revised version (SAS

Associations between alexithymia, parental rearing styles, and frequency of drug use in male methamphetamine dependence patients.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, which is characterized by difficulty identifying and describing feelings, is a stable personality trait and it has been associated with early life experiences. Methamphetamine dependence patients with high level of alexithymia may be particularly vulnerable to engaging in more frequent methamphetamine use. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether alexithymia was associated with frequency of methamphetamine use. Additionally, the current study sought to examine early-life factors associated with the development of alexithymia, i.e., parental rearing styles. METHOD: Part

Evaluating the genetic interaction effects of gut microbiome and diet on the risk of neuroticism in the UK Biobank cohort.

OBJECTIVES: In this study designed to investigate the effect of diet and gut microbiome on neuropsychiatric disorders, we explored the mechanisms of the interaction between diet and gut microbiome on the risk of neuroticism. METHODS: First, using the individual genotype data from the UK Biobank cohort (N = 306 165), we calculated the polygenic risk score (PRS) based on 814 dietary habits single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 21 diet compositions SNPs and 1001 gut microbiome SNPs, respectively. Gut microbiome and diet-associated SNPs were collected from three genome-wide association studies

Neurological manifestations in thrombotic microangiopathy: Imaging features, risk factors and clinical course.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a group of microvascular occlusive disorders that presents with neurological involvement in up to 87% of the cases. Although the central nervous system (CNS) is an important target organ in TMA, the role of neurological manifestations in the disease clinical course is not well established. In this study, we described the neurological manifestations and CNS radiological aspects in patients with a first, acute TMA event. We also examined the association between severe neurological involvement and adverse clinical outcomes in TMA. METHO

Serious game to promote socioemotional learning and mental health (emoTIC): a study protocol for randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The development of emotional competences may be a protective factor for mental health problems, promoting well-being at such a complex age as adolescence. Technologies may be used to carry out this empowerment because adolescents are attracted to them. The purpose of the study is to design a serious game based on the Mayer et al's emotional intelligence ability model and analyse the effectiveness of the emoTIC programme to develop emotional competences, well-being, mental health, and personal strengths immediately after completion and at 12 months.
