[Survival in Lung Cancer among Female Never-smokers in Rural Xuanwei
and Fuyuan Counties in Eastern Yunnan Province, China].

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer rates among women in rural Xuanwei and Fuyuan counties in eastern Yunnan province, China, are among the highest in the world, even though almost all women are non-smokers, and they tend to develop lung cancer at a younger age than other locations by roughly 5 yr-10 yr. This study investigated the survival of lung cancer patients among female never-smokers. METHODS: The female never-smokers, who had lived for many years in Xuanwei and Fuyuan counties, with lung cancer newly-diagnosed between July 2006 to March 2010, were followed up through the end of 2016. Age-standard

Antipsychotic reduction and/or cessation and antipsychotics as specific treatments for tardive dyskinesia.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1950s antipsychotic medication has been extensively used to treat people with chronic mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. These drugs, however, have also been associated with a wide range of adverse effects, including movement disorders such as tardive dyskinesia (TD) - a problem often seen as repetitive involuntary movements around the mouth and face. Various strategies have been examined to reduce a person's cumulative exposure to antipsychotics. These strategies include dose reduction, intermittent dosing strategies such as drug holidays, and antipsychotic cessatio

Predictive modeling of peripheral blood EGFR positivity in patients with advanced primary non-small cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for approximately 85% of cases. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are the most prevalent driver alterations in NSCLC, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have markedly improved survival outcomes. Accurate molecular testing is essential for guiding targeted therapy. However, tissue biopsy, the current gold standard, is often limited by insufficient samples, invasive procedure risks, or tumor heterogeneity, some patients experiencing sampling fa

Lymph nodes rather than pleural metabolic activity in 18F-FDG PET/CT correlates with malignant pleural effusion recurrence in advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Frequently recurrent malignant pleural effusion (MPE) significantly hampers the life quality of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. We aimed to explore the effects of progression patterns and local intervention on MPE recurrence and apply fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) to establish a predictive model for MPE recurrence in NSCLC. METHODS: We retrospectively recruited two cohorts of patients including treatment-naïve NSCLC diagnosed with MPE at the onset and receiving PET/CT scanning, as well as those with MPE a

Wearable Sensors Detect Movement Differences in the Portable Warrior Test of Tactical Agility After mTBI in Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of functional recovery of service members following a concussion is central to their return to duty. Practical military-relevant performance-based tests are needed for identifying those who might need specialized rehabilitation, for evaluating the progress of recovery, and for making return-to-duty determinations. One such recently developed test is the 'Portable Warrior Test of Tactical Agility' (POWAR-TOTAL) assessment designed for use following concussion in an active duty population. This agility task involves maneuvers used in military training, such as rapid stan

AI-powered risk prediction models for preventable maternal mortality in rural settings: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in rural settings with limited access to skilled obstetric care. Artificial intelligence and machine learning models offer promise for early risk prediction, yet their methodological rigour, applicability, and deployment feasibility in resource-constrained rural contexts remain inadequately synthesised. This systematic review evaluated AI-powered risk prediction models for preventable maternal mortality, with an emphasis on their suitability for rural and low-resource settings. MET

The necessity of CT/CTA scans on pediatric cerebrovascular injury after blunt trauma - a single center study.

BACKGROUND: Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is a rare but potentially devastating complication of pediatric blunt trauma. Delayed or missed diagnosis may result in ischemic stroke, permanent neurological deficits, or death. To avoid missed injuries, many trauma centers apply liberal computed tomography angiography (CTA) screening strategies, although this may expose children to substantial and potentially unnecessary radiation. Several adult- and pediatric-derived screening tools have been proposed, but their applicability in pediatric trauma populations remains controversial. This study a

Development of a multivariable clinical prediction model for acute kidney injury after valve replacement surgery: incremental value of the triglyceride-glucose body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) complicates cardiac valve replacement (CVR) in up to one-third of patients. The triglyceride-glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) is a composite marker derived from routine laboratory tests and anthropometric measurements. It reflects the combined burden of insulin resistance and obesity-two interrelated conditions that contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and increased renal microvascular vulnerability. However, its association with AKI after CVR remains unclear. This study aimed to develop a multivariable

Development and internal validation of a CT radiomics-based model for severity classification in HIV-associated Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Severity assessment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is clinically important because arterial blood gas indices are standard but may not fully capture the heterogeneity of lung involvement on chest computed tomography (CT). We aimed to develop and internally validate a CT radiomics model for classifying severity in adults with confirmed HIV-associated PJP. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 96 adult patients with confirmed HIV-associated PJP who underwent chest CT at presentation. Disease severity was cla

Collagen-ORC Versus Standard Treatment in Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomised Trials.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a major cause of infection, hospitalisation, and amputation. Collagen-based dressings-especially collagen combined with oxidised regenerated cellulose (ORC)-are proposed to improve healing by modulating matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), stabilising the extracellular matrix (ECM), and tempering inflammation; some formulations also include antimicrobial or bioactive adjuncts. We conducted a systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance. Adults with DFUs were e

Total metabolic tumor volume on 18F-FDG PET/CT is a game-changer for patients with metastatic lung cancer treated with immunotherapy.

PURPOSE: Because of atypical response imaging patterns in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs), new biomarkers are needed for a better monitoring of treatment efficacy. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the prognostic value of volume-derived positron-emission tomography (PET) parameters on baseline and follow-up 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose PET (18F-FDG-PET) scans and compare it with the conventional PET Response Criteria in Solid Tumors (PERCIST). METHODS: Patients with metastatic NSCLC were included in two
