Patients and healthcare professionals' perspectives on the implementation of shared decision making in multiple myeloma: a multinational qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision making (SDM) is highly relevant in oncology and cancer care, yet its application within multiple myeloma (MM) remains underexplored. This study aims to (1) investigate SDM implementation in MM clinical practice, (2) assess the role of various stakeholders next to haematologists in the SDM process, and (3) identify barriers and potential solutions to SDM implementation in MM care. METHODS: This qualitative study consisted of semi-structured interviews with patients (n = 39), haematologists (n = 15), and haematology nurses (n = 5) from nine countries in Europe and Is

Yoga improves self-reported cognitive function among cancer survivors: results from the STAYFit trial.

IntroductionVarious physical activity-based interventions have been tested to determine their efficacy in improving cancer related cognitive decline (CRCD), however the role of mind-body practices such as yoga remains to be explored. In this manuscript we present preliminary effects of yoga vs. aerobic and stretching-toning modalities of exercise on CRCD among adult cancer survivors.MethodsParticipants (N = 78) were randomized to one of the three exercise groups for a duration of 12-weeks and engaged in ≥150 min per week of supervised group exercises. At baseline and following the 12-week inte

Health-related quality of life and psychological distress among cancer survivors in Southeast Asia: results from a longitudinal study in eight low- and middle-income countries.

BackgroundA better understanding of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological distress in cancer survivors can raise awareness, promote the development of policies in cancer survivorship care, and facilitate better targeted use of limited resources in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The main objectives of this paper were therefore to assess HRQoL and the prevalence of psychological distress amongst cancer survivors in Southeast Asia and identify risk factors of these outcomes.MethodsThe ACTION study was a longitudinal study in eight LMICs in Southeast Asia with 5249 fi

Body composition predictors of mortality in patients undergoing surgery for long bone metastases.

Background and objectivesBody composition measurements using computed tomography (CT) may serve as imaging biomarkers of survival in patients with and without cancer. This study assesses whether body composition measurements obtained on abdominal CTs are independently associated with 90-day and 1-year mortality in patients with long-bone metastases undergoing surgery.MethodsThis single institutional retrospective study included 212 patients who had undergone surgery for long-bone metastases and had a CT of the abdomen within 90 days before surgery. Quantification of cross-sectional areas (CSA)

Physical Characteristics Pertaining to Health-Related Quality of Life in Hospitalized Patients With Hematologic Malignancies: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Patients with hematologic malignancies often experience pre-existing physical decline, which is further exacerbated during chemotherapy, resulting in markedly reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL). These functional impairments are largely attributable to modifiable factors such as physical inactivity and malnutrition. However, the precise relationships among body composition, physical function, and HRQOL in this population remain insufficiently understood. Therefore, this study aimed to identify key physical determinants of HRQOL in hospitalized patients with hematologic ma

Multiple myeloma and physical activity: a scoping review.

ObjectivesMultiple myeloma is the second most common haematological cancer. A growing body of literature is emerging that investigates the role physical activity plays in all stages of multiple myeloma (prevention and survivorship) and to date no attempt has been made to collate and understand this literature. Therefore, this scoping review aims to (1) outline what is already known about physical activity in all stages of multiple myeloma (2) map the literature on physical activity and multiple myeloma and (3) identify future directions for research.DesignScoping Review.Data sourcesSearches we

A real-world comparative analysis of carfilzomib and other systemic multiple myeloma chemotherapies in a US community oncology setting.

BackgroundMost multiple myeloma (MM) patients ultimately progress, with remission duration decreasing after first relapse. Recently, novel agents have been approved for the treatment of relapsed MM. There is a paucity of real-world data on these treatments. We sought to compare time to next treatment (TTNT) in MM patients in their second line of therapy (LOT2), treated with common proteasome inhibitor (PI)-based triplets.MethodsAdult MM patients who received carfilzomib (K) between 1 November 2013 and 29 February 2016 at US Oncology Network (USON) clinics utilizing iKnowMed™ electronic health

Impact of genetic polymorphisms on the response to transdermal fentanyl in cancer patients-a single-center, prospective, biological study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Transdermal fentanyl (TDF) is widely used for moderate-to-severe cancer pain, yet substantial variability in fentanyl exposure, analgesic response, and tolerability remains incompletely explained by clinical factors. We evaluated whether pharmacogenetic variability is associated with pharmacokinetic parameters and clinical outcomes in cancer patients receiving TDF. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center study, adults with solid or hematological malignancies and chronic cancer pain treated with stable-dose 72 h TDF were enrolled. Blood samples were collected for pha

Urban and Rural Differences in Cancer Treatment Disruption Among Patients With COVID-19: An Analysis of the US ASCO COVID-19 in Oncology Registry.

IntroductionCancer patients in rural areas experience greater barriers to treatment access compared with patients in urban areas. There is limited research on how the COVID-19 pandemic affected cancer treatment delivery for rural patients who were also diagnosed with COVID-19. This study has two objectives: to assess (1) the urban-rural differences in cancer care and (2) the predictors of cancer treatment delay or discontinuation (TDD) among patients diagnosed with COVID-19.MethodsWe used data from the American Society of Clinical Oncology Survey on COVID-19 in Oncology Registry (March 2020-Se

Over-the-counter and compounded mouthwashes for radiotherapy-induced xerostomia: a randomized controlled trial.

Head and neck radiotherapy quantitatively and qualitatively compromises salivary flow, and salivary substitutes have the potential to alleviate the symptoms. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of two salivary substitutes in relieving symptoms of radiotherapy-induced xerostomia through a double-blind randomized controlled trial. Twenty-four patients were selected from a dental oncology clinic and randomly assigned to the over-the-counter or compounded mouthwash group. Each patient was instructed to rinse their oral cavity with the assigned solution three times a day for 30 days. Both p

The EPICURE study: a pilot prospective cohort study of heterogeneous and massive data integration in metastatic breast cancer patients.

BackgroundBreast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the first cancer concerning mortality. Metastatic breast cancer remains a disease with a poor prognosis and about 30% of women diagnosed with an early stage will have a secondary progression. Metastatic breast cancer is an incurable disease despite significant therapeutic advances in both supportive cares and targeted specific therapies. In the management of a metastatic patient, each clinician follows a highly complex and strictly personal decision making process. It is based on a number of objective and subjective parameters whic

The impact of smoking on outcomes among patients undergoing hematopoietic SCT for the treatment of acute leukemia.

A paucity of research exists examining the potential impact of tobacco use on cancer treatment outcomes, especially among patients treated with hematopoietic SCT (HSCT). A retrospective cohort study design was used to examine the impact of smoking on duration of hospitalization and overall survival among 148 consecutive patients undergoing HSCT for treatment of acute leukemia from 1999 to 2005. Of the 148 patients, 15% reported current smoking, 30% former smoking, and 55% never used tobacco. Patients were followed for a median 3.5 years (interquartile range=2.1-5.5). Perceptions of Older Adults with Hematological Cancer on Diet and Exercise Behavior and Its Role in Navigating Daily Tasks.

Diet and exercise are associated with the maintenance of physical function, independence and better health-related quality of life in cancer survivors. Adherence to healthy diet and exercise guidelines, however, remains low. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of hematological cancer survivors (HCS, ≥50 years) on the role of diet and exercise in navigating daily tasks using a qualitative descriptive research method. Eligible HCS completed an online survey gathering demographic information including physical functioning, exercise frequency, malnutrition and frailty risk. Follow
