Effects of chronic social isolation on Wistar rat behavior and brain plasticity markers.

Chronic stress is a contributing risk factor in the development of psychiatric illnesses, including depressive disorders. The mechanisms of their psychopathology are multifaceted and include, besides others, alterations in the brain plasticity. Previously, we investigated the effects of chronic social stress in the limbic brain structures of Wistar rats (hippocampus, HIPPO, and prefrontal cortex, PFC) and found multiple characteristics that resembled alterations described in some clinical studies of depression. We extended our investigations and followed the behavior of stressed animals by the

Oral health and oral health-related behaviour in preschool children: evidence for a social gradient.

This study aims to investigate the social gradient in the reported oral health-related behaviour and oral health status of preschool children. Participants were 1,057 children born between October 2003 and July 2004 in Flanders, Belgium. Oral health examinations were performed by trained dentists when the children were 3 and 5 years old (respectively, in 2007 and 2009); data on dietary habits, oral hygiene habits and dental attendance of the children were obtained through structured questionnaires completed by the parents. Maternal educational level, measured in four categories, was used as a

Older female caregivers and HIV/AIDS-related secondary stigma in rural South Africa.

South Africa's HIV/AIDS epidemic poses a major public health threat with multi-faceted harmful impacts and 'socially complex' outcomes. While some outcomes relate to structural issues, others stem from society's attitudinal milieu. Due to negative attitudes toward People Living with HIV/AIDS, stigmatisation mars their own experience and often extends to those close to them, in particular their caregivers. Many of the caregivers in South Africa are older women; thus, older women are the focus of this paper, which aims to examine HIV/AIDS-related stigma from their perspective. This paper explore

Modeling early cortical serotonergic deficits in autism.

Autism is a developmental brain disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction, language and behavior. Brain imaging studies demonstrate increased cerebral cortical volumes and micro- and macro-scopic neuroanatomic changes in children with this disorder. Alterations in forebrain serotonergic function may underlie the neuroanatomic and behavioral features of autism. Serotonin is involved in neuronal growth and plasticity and these actions are likely mediated via serotonergic and glutamatergic receptors. Few animal models of autism have been described that replicate both etiology and p

Comorbidity and course of psychiatric disorders in a community sample of former prisoners of war.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed DSM-III-R disorders among American former prisoners of war. Comorbidity, time of onset, and the relationship of trauma severity to complicated versus uncomplicated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were examined. METHOD: A community sample (N=262) of men exposed to combat and imprisonment was assessed by clinicians using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R. RESULTS: The rates of comorbidity among the men with PTSD were lower than rates from community samples assessed by lay interviewers. Over one-third of the cases of lifetime PTSD were uncompli

Structure-altering mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 frameshifting RNA element.

With the rapid rate of COVID-19 infections and deaths, treatments and cures besides hand washing, social distancing, masks, isolation, and quarantines are urgently needed. The treatments and vaccines rely on the basic biophysics of the complex viral apparatus. Although proteins are serving as main drug and vaccine targets, therapeutic approaches targeting the 30,000 nucleotide RNA viral genome form important complementary approaches. Indeed, the high conservation of the viral genome, its close evolutionary relationship to other viruses, and the rise of gene editing and RNA-based vaccines all a

Functional topography of the right inferior parietal lobule structured by anatomical connectivity profiles.

The nature of the relationship between structure and function is a fundamental question in neuroscience, especially at the macroscopic neuroimaging level. Although mounting studies have revealed that functional connectivity reflects structural connectivity, whether similar structural and functional connectivity patterns can reveal corresponding similarities in the structural and functional topography remains an open problem. In our current study, we used the right inferior parietal lobule (RIPL), which has been demonstrated to have similar anatomical and functional connectivity patterns at the

Mapping Mpox vaccine hesitancy using an integrated machine learning and structural equation modeling approach.

This study employs an integrated computational approach to investigate Mpox vaccine intention in Bangladesh as Mpox immunisation strategies require a thorough understanding of behavioural determinants. Data from 405 participants were analysed using a structured framework that included frequentist statistics to examine demographic relationships, t-distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding (t-SNE) for unsupervised grouping, and structural equation modelling (SEM) to confirm underlying behavioural trends. About 77% of people were willing to get vaccinated, and this was mainly influenced by their

Structural stigma, gender-affirming interventions, and identity concealment as determinants of depression and life satisfaction among trans adults in 28 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Although medical gender-affirming interventions (GAIs) are vital for most transgender individuals, previous evidence regarding their impacts on psychological well-being is mixed. While some studies reported improvements, others failed to find such effects. Using a large-scale dataset of trans adults from 28 European countries, we aimed to understand how structural stigma and identity concealment might explain this inconsistency. METHOD: 15,845 trans adults who participated in the EU-LGBTI-II survey, including measures of gender-affirming interventions, identity concealment, and li

Structural learning difficulties implicate altered hippocampal functioning in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Structural learning is fundamental to the formation of cognitive maps that are necessary for learning, memory, and spatial navigation. It also enables successful navigation of the social world, which is something that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) find particularly difficult. To master these situations, a person needs to bind pieces of information to one another and to consider the context in which experiences happen. Such binding is a capacity of the hippocampus. Although altered hippocampal function has for long been suspected to play a role in the etiology of ASD, the rele

Impact of Poor Air Quality and Excess Heat on Pregnancy Outcomes.

Climate change is worsening air pollution and increasing global temperatures, which is adversely affecting human health in many ways. Pregnant people appear to be at greater risk for complications related to exposure to excess heat and air pollution due to normal physiologic adaptations that occur in pregnancy. Social and structural determinants of health contribute to disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards among some populations which worsens existing inequities in perinatal outcomes. Nurses are uniquely positioned to educate patients about environmental health risks, promote adap

Precarious Capital: A Qualitative Study Investigating the Role of Relationships When Women Navigate Experiences of Homelessness and Violence.

Research investigating the experiences of women experiencing homelessness often highlights the prevalence of (sexual/domestic) violence and abuse in their trajectories. Drawing on observations across a sample of English statutory and voluntary sector homelessness services and 60 semi-structured interviews with practitioners and with women with homelessness experiences, this study explores these experiences of gender-based violence and the relational impact these may have had on women's help-seeking. Findings suggest that experiences of violence are often normalized, leading some of the women t

The role of social determinants of health in addressing morbidity associated with peripartum cardiomyopathy in Black individuals: A narrative literature review.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare but significant cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. Among Black birthing individuals, opportunities to address disparities in care can impact outcomes. Studies linking social and structural drivers and determinants of health to maternal outcomes are limited, particularly pertaining to PPCM. This narrative review attempts to address literature gaps by offering solutions based approaches to cardio-obstetrical outcomes in the maternal mortality and morbidity space, which is needed for not only obstetrical clinicians and maternal fetal medicine spe

Assisted dying in practice: Australian lessons for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

This editorial draws on clinical experience with Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) in Western Australia to critically examine the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. It compares the legislative approaches and examines the three key eligibility criteria: Terminal Illness (clause 2), Capacity (clause 3), and Coercion (clause 7). Concerns include prognostic accuracy, assessment setting, and structural coercion. Recommendations include independent life expectancy evaluations, outpatient based assessments, and early mandatory palliative care and social work involvement. Transparency about societ

Crack use is increasing throughout Europe, particularly among socially marginalized groups in urban areas. Current pharmacological treatments for cocaine use disorder show limited efficacy. Cocaine-assisted treatment, modeled on heroin-assisted approaches, may offer a harm-reduction alternative. It combines medical supervision, controlled dosing, and better alignment with user preferences. Three administration routes are discussed: pharmaceutical-grade powder, user-prepared crack, or ready-to-use inhalable form. Such a strategy could reduce health risks, improve treatment adherence, and suppor

Social Support, Delivery Mode, and Cultural Factors in Twin Parents' Postpartum Depression: A Response to Egsgaard et al.

BACKGROUND: Egsgaard et al. (2024) highlight the temporal patterns of postpartum depression (PPD) risk in twin parents versus singleton parents. However, additional factors such as social support systems, delivery mode, and cultural influences require exploration. PURPOSE: To discuss the role of structured postpartum care, cesarean sections, and mother-infant bonding in moderating PPD risk, especially within cultural contexts. CONCLUSION: These factors may explain the gender-specific temporal patterns observed by Egsgaard et al. Future research should integrate sociocultural and clinical var
