[Rehabilitation with bone anchored facial prostheses].

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation of orbita defects with loss of eyelids is difficult to achieve with plastic surgery. Here defect coverage with a facial prosthesis shows good results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 105 patients with orbita defects were treated since 1991 with bone anchored facial prostheses. Preoperatively we measured the bone availability with computed tomography. We inserted Brånemark-titanium implants (Fa. Nobel Biocare), with a two-stage procedure. After a period of at least three months we exposed implants and connected the supraconstruction. Then our anaplastologist produced the facia

Multisegmental cervical spondylotic myelopathy and radiculopathy treated by multilevel oblique corpectomies without fusion.

OBJECTIVE: The description of the technique of multilevel oblique corpectomy (MOC) without fusion in the treatment of spondylotic myelopathy and radiculopathy and the analysis of the results of this technique from a series of 101 cases are presented. METHODS: MOC is performed using an anterolateral approach with control of the vertebral artery. The vertebral bodies are drilled obliquely from the lateral side toward the opposite posterolateral corner. More than half of the vertebral bodies are preserved, and no fusion procedure is required. The series of patients from 1992 through 1997 include

[A case of primary intracranial malignant fibrous histiocytoma associated with peritumoral hemorrhage].

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is common among the soft-tissue sarcoma and especially occurs in the retroperitoneum and the four extremities. However primary intracranial MFH is an extremely rare occurrence. A case with primary intracranial MFH associated with peritumoral hemorrhage is reported. A 81-year-old woman was admitted to our department with impaired consciousness and left hemiparesis. On admission, she was drowsy. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a low density mass lesion of 4.5 x 3.5 x 6.0cm in diameter, which was surrounded by a high density area suggesting hematoma, i

[Computerized manometry concept for site-specific reconstruction of the pharynx and pharyngo-esophageal transition].

Fifty-three patients who underwent laryngopharyngeal cancer surgery were examined with a sequential computer manometry system using 4-channel pressure probes. Swallowing coordination is largely independent of the oropharyngeal pressure thrust nor of the pharyngeal transit time and depends mainly on initiation of swallowing. The points of interest are the pharyngeal entrance and outlet. The topographic correlates are the base of the tongue and the upper esophageal sphincter. Resections of the base of the tongue decrease the volume available for pressure generation reducing the driving force of

Fine needle aspiration cytology of renal and retroperitoneal angiomyolipoma. Report of two cases with cytologic findings and clinicopathologic pitfalls in diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma is a benign soft tissue neoplasm that usually arises in the kidney, although rare extrarenal examples have been documented. CASES: Two cases of the neoplasm occurred in which fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies were performed. The first patient was a 73-year-old female with a history of breast carcinoma who presented with a large retroperitoneal mass. Transabdominal FNA biopsy revealed multiple fragments of spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells, a few of which showed marked cellular atypia with occasional cells containing fat vacuoles, producing a lipoblastlike appeara

Imaging of mediastinal foregut cysts.

This study was undertaken to determine the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of mediastinal foregut cysts. The MRI scans of 56 patients (with a total of 57 mediastinal masses) were reviewed. The patients (26 women and 30 men) had been examined between March 1986 and April 1991 at a tertiary-care hospital. T1-weighted and T2-weighted spin-echo images were available in all cases. The signal intensity of the lesions was compared with that of normal fat and muscle; the size, shape and location of the mediastinal masses were also noted. The 57 lesions consisted of 15 lympho

A comparison of two techniques for attaining root coverage.

This study compared the relative success of soft tissue coverage of denuded roots by two surgical procedures: Autogenous free gingival graft (FGG) and a 2-stage coronally-positioned flap (CPF). Eight patients who had bilateral areas of gingival recession were selected. The areas of recession treated were Class I or II according to Miller's classification and caused either an esthetic problem or root sensitivity. The defects were randomly assigned to surgical procedures in each subject. In the FGG, the root surfaces were root planed, conditioned with a saturated citric acid solution, and an adj

[Otitis externa maligna and cranial neuropathy].

Malignant external otitis (MEO) is a disease of the external auditive channel (EAC) due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa which usually involves individuals with diabetes mellitus. It may result in the invasion of the cranial base with cranial neuropathy and a high mortality rate despite therapy. We report the clinical features, diagnostic procedures, evolution and therapy of 8 patients with MEO, seven of which had cranial neuropathy. All patients have diabetes except one who had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. All had otalgia, otorrhea and headache lasting for several months. Six patients had hom

Magnetic resonance imaging of mediastinal and hilar masses: comparison with CT.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was compared to computed tomography (CT) of the mediastinum and/or hila in 37 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma (35 unresectable for cure) and 11 patients with other masses. Spin-echo pulse sequences using a short pulse repetition rate (TR) and short echo delay (TE) were most helpful for detection of abnormal soft-tissue mediastinal and hilar masses. The accuracy of MRI and CT in staging bronchogenic carcinoma for curative resectability/nonresectability was comparable. CT staged 35 of 37 cases appropriately, while MRI correctly staged 36 of 37 cases. Several

Acute mesenteric ischemia caused by adhesive-band-induced mesenteric artery compression with secondary ileal volvulus and internal hernia: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a surgical emergency caused by inadequate blood flow through the mesenteric vessels, resulting in intestinal ischemia and eventual gangrene of the bowel wall. The condition may result from arterial thrombosis, embolism, mesenteric venous thrombosis, or non-occlusive systemic hypoperfusion. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of AMI in a 73-year-old female with a significant past surgical history of transabdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy. She presented with sudden, severe abdominal pain that was disproportionate to

Two divers submerged in the Mediterranean Sea for 30 years: persistence of adipocere and implications for postmortem submersion interval estimation.

Estimation of the postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) remains challenging in bodies recovered from aquatic environments, particularly after prolonged submersion and in the presence of adipocere. We report the cases of two divers who disappeared during the same accident in the Mediterranean Sea in December 1993 and were recovered 30 years later at depths of 103 and 113 m, 13 m apart. Both bodies underwent whole-body postmortem computed tomography, external examination, autopsy, toxicological analyses, and genetic identification. Both showed advanced skeletonization predominantly affecting the

Implementing 3D-printed indexing devices and contemporary scanning techniques for complete-arch implant-supported rehabilitations: A clinical case report.

A sixty-eight-year-old male presented to the dental clinic seeking a complete mouth rehabilitation. He exhibited generalized dental caries, dental staining, cervical lesions, fremitus, and anterior wear. After declining tooth-retaining options, he elected full-mouth extractions with immediately loaded implant-supported prostheses. A hybrid workflow, incorporating both digital and conventional steps, was used to plan treatment. The cone-beam computed tomography-derived anatomical data were integrated with the articulated diagnostic casts using a custom three‑dimensional (3D)-printed hexagonal i

A soft tissue mass around the arteries after pancreatectomy: the association with local recurrence and the impact of neoadjuvant radiotherapy in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

PURPOSE: The presence of a soft tissue mass (STM) around the arteries is often observed after pancreatectomy. Although a STM frequently represents local recurrence, it can also reflect benign postoperative changes. However, the frequency of STMs and the factors determining whether its presence leads to local recurrence or remains benign have not been studied. This study aimed to determine the frequency of STM after pancreatectomy and to identify the clinical factors associated with the development of local recurrence. METHODS: A total of 246 patients who underwent pancreatectomy at a single i

massMatchR: a Shiny application for glycomics mass spectrometry data analysis.

MOTIVATION: The identification and analysis of glycans using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is a critical task in glycomics research, yet it often requires complex data interpretation and manual processing. Existing software tools frequently lack automated solutions for efficient glycan annotation, data structuring and grouping, and semi-quantitative evaluation, making large-scale glycan analysis challenging. To address these limitations, we developed massMatchR, an open-source software tool designed to streamline the identification and quantification of glycans in MALDI-TOF spectra. RESULTS: ma

Limb salvage with brachial-to-radial bypass using a saphenous vein graft following severe crush injury: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Severe crush injuries to the upper limb can result in complex arterial damage and acute limb ischaemia, which often precludes primary repair. In such challenging settings, distal-target bypass using an autologous conduit may be required to achieve timely revascularisation and limb salvage. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male patient presented with acute ischaemia of the upper limb following a work-related crush injury. Computed tomography angiography revealed a long-segment occlusion of the distal brachial artery and absent distal flow. Emergency surgical exploration revealed ex

Uncertainty quantification in FEM simulation of human liver: sensitivity analysis, Gradient-Enhanced Kriging, and Monte Carlo simulation.

The numerical simulation of metabolic processes in the human liver involves challenges related to model accuracy, physiological representation, and data uncertainty. Soft tissue models must capture complex, multiphase, and time-dependent behavior. However, the high computational cost of such analyses often restricts them to simplified deterministic scenarios that neglect biological variability and uncertainty. In this paper, the deterministic foundation of a liver perfusion-function model based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) is extended to incorporate material variability. To this end, a w
