This study explores the mental health impact of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) during wartime, focusing on the prevalence and severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative symptoms among a sample of 1,511 Israeli adults exposed to the recent war. Data were collected during the third month of the Israel-Hamas war. Our findings reveal elevated clinical PTSD symptoms (36.8%) and dissociation (16.3%) across the population, including 17.8% of individuals not directly exposed to trauma who nonetheless reported PTSD symptoms above the clinical threshold. These results challe

The prevalence of treatment-resistant depression within global and military populations highlights the need for novel treatment approaches beyond monoamine neurotransmitter modulators. Buprenorphine (BUP), a semi-synthetic partial opioid agonist, is approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder and has shown promise in treating both depression and chronic pain. This case report discusses the use of transdermal BUP in treating a 36 year-old man with treatment-resistant depression with prominent anhedonia, military-related posttraumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain because of barosinusi

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among earthquake survivors who sought psychiatric consultation at outpatient clinics in the aftermath of the Kahramanmaras Twin Earthquakes (Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.5).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This observational study targeted a demographic impacted by seismic events within the first month, specifically all patients who self-presented at our outpatient clinic. The primary outcome variable was the diagnosis at the time of consultation according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DS

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic-stress disorder (PTSD) patients suffer from cognitive dysfunction and show impairments even in non-trauma-related memory. Research has focused on the relationship between associative-memory and PTSD severity due to patients' tendency to over-generalize from traumatic cues to neutral ones, leading to escalation of traumatic symptoms. In this study we aim to test to what extent inhibitory control impairments are correlated to associative-memory deficits in PTSD.
METHOD: Twenty PTSD and 22 control participants were included. Posttraumatic symptoms were assessed via a boa

Exposure to traumatic events is higher in people with severe psychiatric conditions (SPC) than those without, yet little is known about possible gender differences in the prevalence and type of trauma experienced as well as its relationship to subsequent psychological symptomatology. The present study aims to (1) examine the prevalence for both genders of trauma exposure and associated mental health outcomes in a SPC population, (2) explore possible patterns of exposure to traumatic events among men and women separately with SPC, and (3) explore the association between trauma patterns of each

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious and prevalent problem affecting approximately one in three women globally. Physical IPV can involve non-fatal strangulation (NFS), which can result in an acquired brain injury (ABI), inferred by an alteration in consciousness (AIC). However, there is limited research pertaining to NFS-related ABIs, especially in the context of understanding long-term outcomes. We examined neurobehavioral and traumatic stress symptoms associated with a past history of IPV-related strangulation, focusing on the presence of strangulation and the presence and type of a

Sleep deficiency is a major global health threat. While some studies have suggested a J-shaped relationship between sleep duration and adverse health outcomes, the influence of excessive sleep is often attributed to confounding factors, such as depression. It remains unclear whether insufficient and excessive sleep would be similarly or differentially associated with a transdiagnostic range of mental health problems in young people. We collected data from 3210 participants (15-25 years) from a household-based epidemiological youth study in Hong Kong. Using univariate and multivariable logistic

Virtual reality (VR) applications have shown significant potential in enhancing psychological interventions by evoking vivid emotional reactions and creating immersive environments. This commentary provides an overview of five clinical case reports illustrating the advantages and pitfalls of VR-enhanced psychotherapy in social anxiety disorder, PTSD due to military trauma, auditory hallucinations, depression, and chronic pain. The case reports are analyzed with a dimensional framework designed to evaluate VR applications to be used in psychotherapy. The framework is based on three key dimensio

Objective: Cumulative data indicate that new protocols of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may induce neuroplasticity and improve clinical symptoms of patients suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of HBOT on veterans with combat-associated PTSD (CA-PTSD) in a randomized, sham-controlled trial. Methods: Male veterans aged 25-60 years with CA-PTSD, with a Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) score above 20, were included. Exclusion criteria included a history of traumatic brain injury, other psychiatric dise

AIMS: Although natural hazards (e.g., tropical cyclones, earthquakes) disproportionately affect developing countries, most research on their mental health impact has been conducted in high-income countries. We aimed to summarize prevalences of mental disorders in Global South populations (classified according to the United Nations Human Development Index) affected by natural hazards.
METHODS: To identify eligible studies for this meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science up to February 13, 2024, for observational studies with a cross-sectional or longitudinal design that

BACKGROUND: The psychological health and sleep quality of intensive care unit (ICU) patients and their families have health implications, and greater attention should be devoted to developing effective interventions to address these concerns. Due to an increasing amount of evidence on ICU diary interventions, their comparative effectiveness should be evaluated.
AIMS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of ICU diaries on psychological disorders and sleep quality in critically ill patients and on psychological disorders in their family members.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans deal with 'unobservable' medical or mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, at higher rates than the general population. Disclosure of such conditions is important to provide social, emotional, medical and mental health support, but veterans may face challenges when deciding whether to disclose conditions, including fear of stigma or discrimination. Safe disclosure in the workplace is particularly important, as it allows employees to gain accommodations and enables employers to manage workplace health and safety effectively. The objective of thi

BACKGROUND: Nosocomephobia, a type of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is a diagnosis of an extreme fear of hospitals that can hinder current/future medical care. There is little research on how nosocomephobia affects elective surgery or how acupuncture can help patients cope.
METHODS: Using the transactional model of stress/coping, this qualitative case study examined the role of acupuncture in nosocomephobia patients' elective surgery appraisal processes. Two patients were interviewed about their nosocomephobia and prior hospital experiences. Six reviewers coded interview transcripts l

OBJECTIVE: After WW II, Holocaust survivors often faced negative assessments by German psychiatrists when claiming compensation for psychological damage, a fact that was met with criticism. This study examines how as a result the prevailing doctrine on trauma sequelae underwent a transformation.
METHODS: Academic contributions in German language from 1946 to 1969 are analyzed for their para-digmatic views on the etiology of mental disorders after war and Nazi persecution.
RESULTS: Only a new generation of psychiatrists was able to develop more adequate psychotraumatological concepts by using

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment is indisputably linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including an increased risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. The role of childhood maltreatment in the context of recovery from a trauma later in adulthood is not well understood. A variable related to both childhood maltreatment and PTSD symptoms, and a potential link between the two, is sleep. The current study aimed to understand how sleep disturbances may play a mechanistic role in the effect of subtypes of childhood maltreatment on PTSD symptom severity in an adult trau

The perinatal period is marked by a higher risk of experiencing depressive, anxiety, and/or trauma-related symptoms, a phenomenon that affects millions of individuals each year. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms commonly co-occur but have rarely been examined together beyond prevalence estimates in the perinatal period. Our study aimed to explore patterns of associations among OCD and PTSD symptoms to elucidate within- and between-person effects and how these effects may change over time. Participants (N = 270) were recruited during pregnancy

Young children exposed to trauma are vulnerable to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although experts agree on the importance of tailoring PTSD assessments to be developmentally-appropriate for young children, there is little research on which assessment methods best identify clinically significant symptomatology in this difficult-to-assess population. Two competing models for assessing PTSD have been proposed by the DSM-5 and ICD-11. This study compared a DSM-5 measure to an ICD-11 measure in young children (ages 1-6) exposed to a natural disaster. The measures identified simil

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has negatively impacted the mental health and well-being of both Canadians and the world as a whole, with Veterans, in particular, showing increased rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Spouses and common-law partners often serve as primary caregivers and sources of support for Veterans, which may have a deleterious effect on mental health and increase risk of burnout. Pandemic related stressors may increase burden and further exacerbate distress; yet the effect of the pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Veterans' spouses is currently unknown. This study exp

Background: Previous studies showed that self-stigma is associated with poor clinical outcomes in people with serious mental illness, and is associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, less is known about self-stigma in people with dissociative symptoms, which are often related to psychological trauma. This study examined whether baseline self-stigma would be associated with dissociative, PTSD and depressive symptoms at post-intervention, after controlling for treatment usage and baseline symptom severity, in a sample of traumatized Chinese adults undertaking a psychoeducat
