[Functional velopalatal insufficiency. Therapeutic possibilities].

The function of the soft palate is complex; it takes part in speech, swallowing, and masticatory mechanisms. Its pathology ranges from morphological deficits to functional ones; these are commonly due to a central nervous system damage. The clinical analysis is based upon examination and instrumental prove, and leads to an optimum choice between surgical and prosthetic solutions. The latter is the best one in terms of quick execution, low costs and future possibilities of improvement.

[A comparative study of breast feeding and artificial infant feeding by ultrasonic scanning].

Sucking process was examined in 22 breast- and formula-fed infants by ultrasonic scanning. Analysis of the obtained echographic images of the oral cavity along the middle sagittal line has led the authors to a conclusion that employment of traditional milk soothers with both large and small holes is harmful for articulation and forms an erroneous pattern of sucking and swallowing function, this possibly resulting in abnormal development of the jaws and oral cavity organs.

Mucosal burn resulting from chewable aspirin: report of case.

A 4-year-old female patient with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis received a mucosal burn from chewable-aspirin therapy. She was given five chewable aspirin tablets before bedtime, and fell asleep before swallowing them. Mucosal burns from incomplete aspirin ingestion can be prevented by not administering aspirin at bedtime, and by cleaning the buccal vestibules with a cotton swab to ensure complete removal of all aspirin.

Unusual gastric foreign body: a case report.

Ingestion of foreign bodies, either intentionally or accidentally, is quite common. The authors report an unusual case in which a 32-year-old man deliberately assembled a large metallic aggregate in his stomach by swallowing magnets and coins in order to relieve epigastric discomfort. The collection was retrieved by laparotomy and gastrotomy; a gastric ulcer was also found and it was oversewn. Management of this patient is discussed and the principles of treatment for ingested foreign bodies are reviewed.

[Stridor in the neonatal period in heterotopic gastric mucosa of the hypopharynx].

A newborn girl suffered from recurrent respiratory distress and swallowing disturbances. With coughing or belching a grape-like tumor appeared in the oral cavity, which was affixed like a pendulum in the hypopharynx. Histological examination revealed a polypoid hamartoma of the hypopharyngeal wall and ectopic gastric mucosa. Various theories of embryogenesis of this very rare condition in the head and neck region are presented. No associated anomalies are reported. Complete surgical excision is curative.

Dysphagia and micrognathia in a patient with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

This report describes the case of a 35-year-old man with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The patient experienced swallowing difficulties that were initially thought to be a result of the disease affecting the cervical spine. A maxillofacial examination, however, showed a total loss of the mandibular condyles, short rami and bodies, and a retrusion of the jaw. This was considered to be the main cause of the dysphagia, and not a glossopharyngeal nerve compression. The surgical-orthodontic management of these difficult cases is discussed.

Indications for pump-assisted enteral feeding.

Of 80 patients fed enterally over nine months, 10 had serious gastrointestinal complications from gravity-controlled continuous enteral feeding. Use of an infusion pump controlled diarrhoea in patients with gastrointestinal disorders, but was less successful in patients with poor gastric emptying or impaired swallowing reflexes. Thus a pump is not indicated for routine use but, in carefully selected patients, it can obviate the necessity for parenteral nutrition.

[Laryngo-pharyngeal paralysis. Complications during the course of myelomeningoceles].

Report of 5 cases in babies with myèlomeningocele and hydrocephalus stridor and troubles in swallowing appeared after a free interval. These facts were already reported in literature. They represent an impairment of cranial nerves (IX,X and XI). The lesion may be located at the level of the nerves themselves or at the level of the origin nucleus in the brain stem. The mechanism of the lesion is not well known. The role of intracranial hypertension and of Arnold-Chiari malformation seem to be prominent.

[Reconstruction of the oesophagus after scarring due to swalled alkali and 22 years of gastrostomy feeding (author's transl)].

The unusual life history of a man (now 24 years old) is reported who, at two years of age, swallowed an alkaline solution which caused severe oesophageal stricture due to scarring. It required feeding by gastrostomy exclusively for 22 years. Reconstruction of the oesophagus was then performed by interposing the colon (splenic flexure). Since secondary malignant degeneration is to be expected in this form of oesophageal stricture, removal of the residual oesophagus is recommended.

Laryngeal Transplantation in Cancer Patients: Evaluation of Surgical Outcomes and Functional Recovery.

Laryngeal transplantation offers a promising avenue for functional restoration following total laryngectomy, yet concerns regarding cancer recurrence and perioperative challenges persist. This pilot study evaluates the preliminary outcomes of a refined surgical technique and postoperative follow-up protocol specifically for cancer patients. Between 2023 and 2024, four patients underwent laryngeal transplantation at West China Hospital, with immunosuppressive therapy, microbial prophylaxis, and postoperative rehabilitation. Over a follow-up period ranging from 10 to 26 months, outcomes were het

Golimumab-induced lupus erythematosus complicated by angioedema and anti-galactocerebroside antibody-positive dysphagia.

Drug-induced lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune condition that resembles systemic lupus erythematosus and occurs after exposure to specific medications, including tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitors. We report a rare case of golimumab-induced lupus erythematosus complicated by macrophage activation syndrome, angioedema, and severe dysphagia with anti-galactocerebroside antibodies detected. A 57-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis developed facial swelling, malar rash, arthritis, pancytopenia, hyperferritinemia, hypocomplementemia, and proteinuria after long-term treatment with tumor ne

Head and neck cancer survivors' experiences with eating and enjoying food three to five years post-treatment: impacts on social lives and sense of identity - a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: To explore the eating experiences of Norwegian survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC), with a particular focus on the social aspects of food and meals. METHODS: Twelve Norwegian HNC survivors, three to five years post-cancer treatment, underwent individual semi-structured interviews. We analysed the data using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The HNC survivors faced long-term side effects like taste disturbances, dry mouth, chewing, and swallowing difficulties. This made eating a demanding task, focused more on dietary intake than enjoyment. To accommodate the eating difficulties, the H

High-Protein Hydrogels Composed of Pea-Collagen Protein and κ-Carrageenan for the Dysphagia Diet.

In this study, pea-collagen proteins and κ-carrageenan were used to create hydrogels with high protein content (20%-27.5%) for dysphagia diets by varying the collagen concentration (7.5%-15%). The effects of collagen concentrations on physical, rheological, and textural properties; microstructure; suitability for a dysphagia diet; and the degree of proteolysis during in vitro digestion of hydrogels were explored. Temperature-sweep analysis indicated that collagen did not participate in network formation and behaved more like an inactive filler. For this reason, the amount of nonnetwork protein

Oral taste preferences and food-handling behaviour in the cave morph of Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus.

Since its discovery in 1936, the cave morph of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, has become a promising model for studies of compensatory adaptation. The loss of vision has driven the adaptive evolution of sensory systems in the cave morph. Studies of the gustatory system have mainly focused on the morphology and distribution of taste buds, but the functional aspects of this system remain unknown. In the present study, oral taste preferences of the cave morph of A. mexicanus were identified for the first time. Using a behavioural assay, it was found that more than half of the 21 proteinog
