Ganglioneuroma of the adrenal gland and retroperitoneum: A case report.

CONTEXT: Ganglioneuromas are benign tumors of the sympathetic nervous system that rarely arise in the adrenal gland. Majority of cases are detected incidentally since they are usually asymptomatic. Up to the current era of laparoscopic adrenal mass excision, this unusual entity has not been adequately reported in the surgical literature. CASE REPORT: A 51 year old male with history of hypertension was found to have abdominal bruit during a regular physical examination. A 4 cm right adrenal mass with upper pole calcification and a 6 cm retro-pancreatic mass were subsequently found on a compute…

Cigarette smoking and hypertension.

Cigarette smoking is a powerful cardiovascular risk factor and smoking cessation is the single most effective lifestyle measure for the prev … nts. Cigarette smoking acutely exerts an hypertensive effect, mainly through the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. As concern the impact of chronic smoking on blood pressure, available data do not put clearly in evidence a direct causal relationship between these two cardiovascular risk factors, a concept supported by the evidence that no lower blood pressure v …

Effect of methamphetamine dependence on heart rate variability.

Methamphetamine (METH) is an increasing popular and highly addictive stimulant associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, cardiovascular pathology and neurotoxicity. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to assess autonomic function and predict mortality in cardiac disorders and drug intoxication, but has not been characterized in METH use. We recorded HRV in a sample of currently abstinent individuals with a history of METH dependence compared to age- and gender-matched drug-free comparison subjects. HRV was assessed using time domain, frequency domain, and non-linear en

Tinnitus as a warning for preventing vasovagal syncope.

It has been widely outlined by our group the possibility that a sufferance of the inner ear can take place as a consequence of hemodynamic imbalance which could affect young and healthy people and recognize a merely functional origin. As reported in previous papers, an altered reaction of the autonomic nervous system could actually jeopardize the labyrinthine perfusion even in absence of other damages. From this standpoint, the hypothesis that a hyperactivity of the vagal response to an acute sympathetic drive may result in an inner ear sufferance deserves to be explored. A mechanism which app

Dopamine-secreting adrenal ganglioneuroma presenting with paroxysmal hypertension attacks.

Adrenal ganglioneuromas are rare tumors originating from the neural crest tissue of the sympathetic nervous system. The clinical presentation for most patients is asymptomatic, and most of these tumors are hormone silent. We report a case of dopamine-secreting adrenal ganglioneuroma associated with paroxysmal hypertensive attacks in an adult patient. A 46-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a 2-month history of right flank pain, and a 2-year history of paroxysmal hypertensive attacks associated with headaches, palpitations, nervousness, and sweating. Abdominal CT and MRI revealed …

Chronic testicular pain: an overview.

Chronic testicular pain (orchialgia, orchidynia or chronic scrotal pain) is common and well recognized but its pathophysiology is poorly und … ion of intraoperative local anaesthetic may have a role in reducing the risk. The importance of the sympathetic nervous system and the role of a possible alteration of the adrenergic receptors of the vas deferens in patients with chronic testicular pain are discussed. For patients failing to respond to conservative treatment, microsurgical denervation of the spermatic cord, …

[Bone mass regulation by leptin: a hypothalamic control of bone formation].

Bone mass is maintained constant between puberty and menopause by the balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts activity. The existence of … nally, the peripheral mediator of leptin's antiosteogenic function has been identified as being the sympathetic nervous system. Catecholamine-deficient mice have a high bone mass and sympathomimetics administered to mice decreased bone formation and bone mass. Conversely, beta-blockers increased bone formation and bone mass and blunt the bone loss induced by ovariectomy.

Hemodynamic consequences of neuropeptide Y-induced obesity.

BACKGROUND: Acute central nervous system administration of neuropeptide Y (NPY) elicits variable hemodynamic responses. Chronic intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of NPY produces obesity in rats. Obesity has been shown to increase arterial pressure. METHODS: In this study we examined the chronic hemodynamic effects of NPY-induced obesity. Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters to continuously record heart rate and arterial pressure in the conscious state. Neuropeptide Y or vehicle was delivered into the third cerebral ventricle by osmotic minipumps over

The incidence, pathophysiology, treatment and prognosis of Cheyne-Stokes breathing disorder in patients with congestive heart failure.

DEFINITION: Cheyne-Stokes respiration is a breathing disorder characterized by recurrent central sleep apneas, mainly during sleep, alternating with a crescendo-decrescendo pattern of tidal volume. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND PROGNOSIS: The pathophysiology of Cheyne-Stokes respiration, involving the cardiovascular, pulmonary and sympathetic nervous systems, is still not well understood. Although 50% of moderate to severe congestive heart failure patients suffer from significant Cheyne-Stokes respiration, studies been undertaken to determine the prevalence of this phenomenon and its implications regard…

The pathology of dry eye.

Homeostasis of the tear film involves delicate hormonal and neuronal regulatory mechanisms. The eye appears to be a target organ for sex hormones, particularly the androgens, as they modulate the immune system and trophic functions of the lacrimal glands and the functioning of the meibomian glands. The cornea, lacrimal glands, mucous cells, and meibomian glands are all richly innervated, indicating the importance of nervous regulation in their function. Parasympathetic, sympathetic, and sensory innervation play complex stimulatory or inhibitory roles, and neuronal pathways interact via complex

C-cell hyperplasia, pheochromocytoma and sympathoadrenal malformation in a mouse model of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B.

Dominantly inherited multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) is characterized by tumors of the thyroid C-cells and adrenal chromaffin cells, together with ganglioneuromas of the gastrointestinal tract and other developmental abnormalities. Most cases are caused by substitution of threonine for Met918 in the RET receptor tyrosine kinase, which is believed to convert the RET gene to an oncogene by altering the enzyme's substrate specificity. We report the production of a mouse model of MEN2B by introduction of the corresponding mutation into the ret gene. Mutant mice displayed C-cell hyperp

Regulation of cytokine and chemokine production by transmitters and co-transmitters of the autonomic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system innervates immune organs and, when activated, releases its signaling molecules in the vicinity of immune cells. The released molecules include the "classical" transmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine and the co-transmitters ATP and adenosine. Immune cells express various adrenergic and purinergic receptors that are sensitive to these molecules, and the production of immune/inflammatory mediators (cytokines, chemokines, and free radicals) is modulated by activation of these receptors. Notably, the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, -10, a…

Parasympathetic dysfunction in rheumatoid arthritis patients with ocular dryness.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether abnormalities in the function of the autonomic nervous system are associated with oral and ocular dryness in rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: Pupillography was done using an infrared light reflection method (IRIS) to measure both parasympathetic function (constriction latency and the latency of maximum constriction velocity (MCV)) and sympathetic function (dilatation latency) in rheumatoid arthritis patients with and without ocular dryness. The Schirmer and Saxon tests were used to measure the tear and saliva production respectively. RESULTS: The Schirmer and Sa

Cyclic AMP levels in ventricular myocytes from noradrenaline-treated guinea-pigs.

Chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system in human heart failure is believed to cause cardiac beta-adrenoceptor desensitisation. We have investigated the relationship between beta-adrenoceptor desensitisation and cyclic AMP levels in cardiac myocytes isolated from the ventricle of guinea-pigs chronically infused with noradrenaline hydrochloride for 7 days. Functional beta-adrenoceptor desensitisation was confirmed by a significant decrease in the maximum isoprenaline-stimulated contraction amplitude and an increased EC50 for isoprenaline. In the absence of beta-adrenoceptor stimulat…

Effects of catecholamines on plasma potassium: the role of alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors.

The sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in the control of plasma potassium levels. Administration of adrenaline or noradrenaline evokes, in the majority of mammal species a dual response: first a short transient hyperkalaemia, followed by a maintained hypokalaemia. Alpha 1- and alpha 2-adrenoceptors mediate the initial hyperkalaemia through the activation of hepatic Ca(2+)-dependent-K(+)-channels. Stimulation of beta 1- and beta 2-adrenoceptors induces the late hypokalaemia by stimulation of skeletal muscle Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase. Beta 3-adrenoceptor stimulation may also have an effe…

Role of the autonomic nervous system in catheter-induced urethral inflammation.

We have studied role of the autonomic nervous system on experimentally induced urethral inflammation in the rat. Urethral inflammation was produced by inserting latex strips into the urethra. The effects of different experimental procedures were assessed by using a 4-grade inflammation scale based on histological findings. Rats pretreated with the nonspecific catecholamine depletors reserpine or quanethidine had a significantly less severe urethral inflammation than vehicle-treated controls. The severity of urethral inflammation was increased in spontaneous hypertensive rats, which have an inc

Opioid dysfunction and risk for hypertension: naloxone and blood pressure responses during different types of stress.

Opioidergic inhibition of sympathetic nervous system responses may be deficient in persons at risk for essential hypertension (McCubbin et al: Hypertension 7:808, 1985). The opiate antagonist naloxone increases blood pressure responses during psychological stress in young adults with low causal blood pressure, but has no pressor effect in subjects with high casual blood pressure. The purpose of the present study was to determine the role of altered baroreflex function in the abnormal pressor effect of naloxone in persons at risk for hypertension development. We tested this by comparison of the…

Adrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the smooth and striated muscle components of the urethra from patients with spinal cord injury.

The adrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the smooth and striated muscle components of the urethra from spinal cord injury patients with detrusor sphincter dyssynergia were investigated neurochemically and histochemically. Catecholamine fluorescence histochemistry provided no evidence for the presence of adrenergic nerves associated with the skeletal muscle. The noradrenaline content of this region probably reflects the endogenous levels in adrenergic nerves associated with the blood vessels supplying the skeletal muscle. Choline acetyltransferase activity in the skeletal muscle was signif
