A Cymbal Transducer as a Single-Element Device for Enhanced Cavitation Generation.

Cavitation driven by low-frequency ultrasound has been widely recognized as an effective method of transdermal drug delivery, but challenges remain regarding the size and efficiency of the sonicator. The cymbal transducer is a promising candidate for such applications; however, the conventional design is limited by its relatively low power output and difficulty in manufacturing with consistency, limiting its success in arrays and for extended treatment times. This study introduces a modified cymbal transducer, operating at 66.2 kHz, designed to offer higher output pressure and an easier fabric

Nanotechnology-Driven Ultrasound/Photoacoustic Theranostics for Real-Time Imaging and Therapeutics.

Theranostic technologies that incorporate nanotechnology into ultrasound (US) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) show great promise for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases. Despite recent advancements in nanomaterials, US/PA systems, which use both endogenous and exogenous contrast agents, are now more sensitive and effective in therapy. Intrinsic optical absorption-based label-free imaging is made possible by endogenous agents such as collagen, lipids, haemoglobin, and melanin. Exogenous contrast agents, on the other hand, are engineered to circumvent drawbacks such as low ti

Stacked 2-D and 1-D Arrays Dual-Core Probe for Ultrasound-Guided Sonoporation.

Sonoporation represents a promising drug delivery modality in oncology. This modality consists of insonifying the targeted tissue with a low-frequency ultrasound beam (typically 1 MHz) following the intravenous injection of gas microbubbles. Activation of these microbubbles under the influence of the ultrasound field increases the permeability of biological barriers, thereby facilitating the passage of therapeutic agents and enhancing their therapeutic efficiency. To support this type of image-guided therapy, a bi-modal probe was designed and characterized. This probe combines a 128-element li

Vibrational Damping of Single Supported Plasmonic Nanodisks.

Achieving mechanical nanoresonators that combine high frequencies with large quality factors remains a central challenge in nanomechanics. Meeting this challenge requires a detailed understanding and mitigation of vibrational damping mechanisms arising from both intrinsic dissipation and acoustic radiation into the surrounding medium. Supported nano-objects are particularly promising in this regard, as recent studies have demonstrated strong, mode-specific reduction of acoustic radiation using tailored simple geometries. Here, we report systematic investigations of the dependence of vibrationa

Beaked whale bioacoustics: knowledge gaps, vulnerability, and conservation imperatives in the Anthropocene.

Marine mammals provide important ecosystem services but are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic noise. Beaked whales (Ziphiidae), among the deepest-diving and least understood marine mammals, remain particularly enigmatic due to their elusive behaviour and limited surface time. Although scientific research efforts have been organized around beaked whales since the 1970s, knowledge of their bioacoustics and responses to anthropogenic sound remains incomplete. Here, we synthesize over two decades of bioacoustic studies to reveal critical gaps in understanding their vulnerability to anthropogenic …

Human-AI emotional resonance in generative music: a mini-review of authorship attribution, affective response, and aesthetic evaluation.

Generative artificial intelligence is increasingly involved in music creation, raising important questions about how listeners emotionally respond to music that is generated by, or attributed to, AI. This mini-review synthesizes recent empirical research on listeners' emotional, aesthetic, and physiological responses to AI-generated music. Existing evidence suggests that AI systems can reproduce some acoustic cues associated with basic emotional categories and may elicit measurable affective or attentional responses under specific conditions. However, listeners' evaluations are shaped not only

A closed-head, rotational traumatic brain injury model demonstrates deficits in righting reflex, neurological function, and auditory brainstem responses in rats.

AIMS: The pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is incompletely understood and warrants further investigation with preclinical models that recapitulate aspects of the human condition. Therefore, our goal was to quantify the initial presentation of deficits in a closed-head rotational TBI model in male and female rats in return of righting reflex (RORR) and global neurological function including gross sound reflex scores as a measure of acoustic startle. METHODS: A total of 116 rats (43 female) were included in this study that underwent TBI (n = 53), Sham (n = 42), or No Anesthesia c

Oxygen-enriching hollow MOF as nanobubbles to enhance treatment of hypertrophic scar via microneedle-mediated sonodynamic therapy.

Hypertrophic scars (HS) are characterized by the over-proliferation of hypertrophic scar fibroblasts (HSFbs) and excessive deposition of a dense extracellular matrix (ECM), which collectively restrict the transdermal delivery and intralesional diffusion of therapeutic agents. Moreover, the hypoxic microenvironment, a prominent hallmark of HS, further exacerbates fibrosis and compromises therapeutic responses. Inspired by clinical ultrasonic microbubbles for cross-barrier transport, we have developed hollow porphyrinic metal-organic framework (H-PMOF) and, PFOB(O2)@H-PMOF (HPPO) nanobubbles by

Advances in ultrasound-mediated nanozyme systems in therapeutic applications.

Ultrasound-mediated nanozyme systems are emerging therapeutic platforms that couple externally controllable acoustic fields with enzyme-mimetic catalysis. Ultrasound can improve tissue delivery, penetration and local activation through cavitation, sonoporation, phase transition and piezoelectric effects, whereas nanozymes remodel pathological microenvironments by generating or scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), modulating oxygen availability, perturbing metabolism and restoring redox homeostasis. A central challenge is to distinguish true nanozyme catalysis from related ultrasound-respo

Porphyrin-based nanoscale metal-organic framework nanocarriers entrapping platinum nanoparticles and S-nitrosoglutathione for sonodynamic therapy in hypoxic tumors.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), which employs acoustic energy to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), has emerged as a promising strategy for tumor treatment. While ultrasound (US) offers deep tissue penetration and minimal invasiveness, the low energy conversion efficiency of sonosensitizers and the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME) significantly limit SDT efficacy. To overcome these challenges, we developed a nano-sonosensitizer, TBP-Hf@Pt-GSNO (Hf-Pt-G), composed of a porphyrin-based nanoscale metal-organic framework (nMOF), TBP-Hf, integrated with platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and S-nit

Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid Effects on Vestibular Function: A Preliminary Report.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear receptors are sensitive to vibratory stimuli. Based on this sensibility, bone-anchored hearing aids have been introduced to correct unilateral or bilateral conductive or mixed hearing loss and unilateral deafness. The vestibular system is also sensitive to the vibratory stimulus and this type of response is used in clinics to test its functionality. Being aware of this double separated sensibility, we wondered whether bone vibration, which activates the acoustic receptors of patients with bone conduction aids, can also influence the functionality of the vestibular system.

Nasal Patency in Sitting, Supine, and Prone Positions in Individuals with and without Allergic Rhinitis.

(1) Background: Physiological changes in nasal patency in response to posture contribute to sleep-related problems. Previously, we reported that the supine and prone positions cause a significant decrease in nasal patency in subjective and objective assessments of healthy individuals. Therefore, we conducted a study to evaluate the effect of posture on nasal patency in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR); (2) Methods: The present study comprised 30 patients diagnosed with AR and 30 healthy subjects without nasal disease (non-AR). Changes in nasal patency were evaluated in the sitting, supine,

Cognitive Digital Biomarkers from Automated Transcription of Spoken Language.

BACKGROUND: Although patients with Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive-related neurodegenerative disorders may benefit from early detection, development of a reliable diagnostic test has remained elusive. The penetration of digital voice-recording technologies and multiple cognitive processes deployed when constructing spoken responses might offer an opportunity to predict cognitive status. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cognitive status might be predicted from voice recordings of neuropsychological testing. DESIGN: Comparison of acoustic and (para)linguistic variables from low-quality

Eliciting and Characterizing Porcine Vocalizations: When Pigs Fly.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While voice-related therapeutic interventions are often researched preclinically in the porcine model, there are no well-established methods to induce porcine glottic phonation. Described approaches, such as training animals to phonate for positive reinforcement are time-consuming and plagued by inherent variability in the type of phonation produced and contamination of background noise. Thus, a reliable method of assessing glottic phonation in the porcine model is needed. METHODS: In this study, we have created a novel pulley-based apparatus with harness for "pig-lifti

Neurodegeneration Within the Amygdala Is Differentially Induced by Opioid and HIV-1 Tat Exposure.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a critical problem that contributes to the spread of HIV and may intrinsically worsen neuroHIV. Despite the advent of combined antiretroviral therapies (cART), about half of persons infected with HIV (PWH) experience cognitive and emotional deficits that can be exacerbated by opioid abuse. HIV-1 Tat is expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) of PWH on cART and is thought to contribute to neuroHIV. The amygdala regulates emotion and memories associated with fear and stress and is important in addiction behavior. Notwithstanding its importance in emotional sali

Determination of modifications in rat liver due to phthalate uptake by SAM, RS, and ICP-OES.

The use of phthalates as plasticizers has been omnipresent, especially in cosmetics and food packaging, despite the proven effects on some organs of humans and animals. Therefore, alterations in living organisms due to phthalate exposure attract the attention of many scientists. Here, we demonstrate a mechanical and chemical investigation of the mentioned effects of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) on rat liver by utilizing scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM), Raman spectroscopy (RS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for the first
