Genital size: a common adolescent male concern.

Long before adolescence, males hear insinuations about adequacy of penis size. This concern may heighten during teen years and persist to varying degrees into adulthood. Men tend to underestimate their own penis size. This chapter provides objective information about anatomy and growth of the penis, including data about normal sizes. Published data indicate that, although full growth may be reached at different ages during adolescence, size is similar for most adult males. Hopefully, this information will provide the basis for teenaged males to develop a healthy perspective and to avoid intimi

Sociological factors in the development of eating disorders.

In recent years, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, whether combined into a single clinical picture or considered as distinct syndromes, have reached epidemic proportions among adolescents. Professionals in the educational and physical and mental health care fields need to be aware of the influence of social pressures on teenagers' perceptions of body image and appearance. This article reviews the sociocultural, socioeconomic, and sex-related factors which contribute to the development of eating disorders. It is recommended that professionals help adolescents resist societal pressure to conform to

Editorial: Criticality: a novel brain metric associated with sleep that may elucidate sleep's influence on adolescent depression.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has been shown to have a bidirectional relationship with sleep. Adolescence is both the peak period of onset for MDD and a time of pronounced sleep disruption, yet the mechanisms linking disturbed sleep to depression risk remain poorly understood. We propose that brain criticality, an EEG measure of neural dynamics and information processing capacity, offers a novel putative mechanistic lens to understand this relationship. In adolescence, criticality may be perturbed by sleep disturbance through both a short-term failure of nightly restoration and long-term pro

[Expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in children and adolescents (2026 edition)].

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a common malignant tumor in children, accounting for approximately 7% of all childhood malignancies, with a higher incidence rate among adolescents. After standardized treatment, the overall survival rate exceeds 80%. Lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL), mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (mB-NHL), and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) account for 90% of pediatric and adolescent NHL cases. The Lymphoma Group of the Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association has organized multidisciplinary experts from pediatric oncology, pediatrics, internal medicine, patholo

Cost-Effectiveness of Increasing Outdoor Activity in Preventing Myopia in Children and Adolescents - China.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Myopia has emerged as a significant public health concern in China, particularly among children and adolescents. While evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of outdoor activity in preventing myopia, comprehensive economic analyses evaluating its role in reducing myopia-related diseases remain limited. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of increasing outdoor activity across different educational stages in preventing myopia-related diseases among Chinese children and adolescents. The findings indicate that interv

Examining the Validity of the Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire for Adolescents Aged 12-18 (LOPF-Q 12-18): A Replication and Extension With a Sample of Lithuanian Adolescents.

With the shift to the dimensional model of personality pathology, the need for measures assessing personality functioning in adolescence has emerged. The Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire 12-18 (LoPF-Q 12-18) was developed specifically for adolescents, tailoring the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in the DSM-5. Using the Lithuanian LoPF-Q 1218, we further investigate its validity by reexamining its factorial structure and extending convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity analyses. A total of 1,048 community-based and clinically referred 12-18-year-old adoles

KidsTUMove-A Holistic Program for Children with Chronic Diseases, Increasing Physical Activity and Mental Health.

The prevalence of chronic diseases in children and adolescents has risen alarmingly worldwide. Diseases such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, mental disorders, and congenital heart defects are increasingly affecting the lives of children and pose significant challenges for the healthcare system. Physical activity plays a crucial role in preventing and treating these diseases. Numerous studies have shown that regular exercise improves physical performance, increases well-being, and leads to better health in the long term. Specially tailored sports programs that meet the individual needs and abilit

Analyzing the role of resilience and life satisfaction as mediators of the impact of COVID-19 worries on mental health.

The aim of this study was to test whether resilience and life satisfaction (two traditional protective factors) mediate between COVID-19 related worries and the development of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in adolescents and young adults. Participants involved 392 adolescents and young adults (70.20% female) aged between 12 and 25 years (M = 17.05 years, SD = 3.08). Participants completed the COVID-19 related worries scale, the CD-RISC to analyse resilience, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales-21 to study emotional symptoms. Global child and adolescent mental health perspectives: bringing change locally, while thinking globally.

Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) are a global priority. Different countries across the globe face unique challenges in CAMH services that are specific to them. However, there are multiple issues that are also similar across countries. These issues have been presented in this commentary from the lens of early career CAMH professionals who are alumni of the Donald J Cohen Fellowship program of the IACAPAP. We also present recommendations that can be implemented locally, namely, how promoting mental health and development of children and adolescents can result in better awareness and int

Blood pressure dynamics after pubertal suppression with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs followed by estradiol treatment in transgender female adolescents: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: The benefits of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) in the treatment of central precocious puberty are well established, and their use is regarded as both safe and effective. Possible adverse effects on blood pressure (BP) and cardiac outcomes, body composition, bone health and brain development, however, continue to be of some concern. The aim of this study was to analyze BP changes in transgender female adolescents before and after receiving GnRHa and after adding estrogen treatment. METHODS: This was a retrospective pilot study. We analyzed systolic BP (SBP) and di

Direct brain recordings reveal occipital cortex involvement in memory development.

Processing of low-level visual information shows robust developmental gains through childhood and adolescence. However, it is unknown whether low-level visual processing in the occipital cortex supports age-related gains in memory for complex visual stimuli. Here, we examined occipital alpha activity during visual scene encoding in 24 children and adolescents, aged 6.2-20.5 years, who performed a subsequent memory task while undergoing electrocorticographic recording. Scenes were classified as high- or low-complexity by the number of unique object categories depicted. We found that recognition

Adolescents' Addictive Phone Use: Associations with Eating Behaviors and Adiposity.

Concerns have been raised about excessive or "addictive" phone use among adolescents, and the impact that addictive phone use (APU) can have on adolescent development and health. Most research on the physical health correlates of smartphone use has been limited to sleep health, whereas other outcomes, such as eating behaviors and obesity risk have not received as much attention. To address this gap in the literature, we examined the association between APU and emotion regulation difficulties, impulsivity, maladaptive eating behaviors, and adiposity in a sample of 111 adolescents. We found that…

Children and adolescents' neural response to emotional faces and voices: Age-related changes in common regions of activation.

The perception of facial and vocal emotional expressions engages overlapping regions of the brain. However, at a behavioral level, the ability to recognize the intended emotion in both types of nonverbal cues follows a divergent developmental trajectory throughout childhood and adolescence. The current study a) identified regions of common neural activation to facial and vocal stimuli in 8- to 19-year-old typically-developing adolescents, and b) examined age-related changes in blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) response within these areas. Both modalities elicited activation in an overlapping

Genetic testing in intellectual disability psychiatry: Opinions and practices of UK child and intellectual disability psychiatrists.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of genetic causes of intellectual disabilities (ID) are identifiable by clinical genetic testing, offering the prospect of bespoke patient management. However, little is known about the practices of psychiatrists and their views on genetic testing. METHOD: We undertook an online survey of 215 psychiatrists, who were contacted via the Royal College of Psychiatrist's Child and Adolescent and Intellectual Disability Psychiatry mailing lists. RESULTS: In comparison with child and adolescent psychiatrists, intellectual disability psychiatrists ordered more genetic

Banting Memorial Lecture 2016 Reducing lifetime risk of complications in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes.

Adolescence is a challenging period of life for any young person, and for those with Type 1 diabetes, physiological and psychological factors can result in a deterioration in glycaemic control. In young people with Type 1 diabetes, puberty may be an additional risk factor impacting on the lifetime risk for renal and cardiovascular complications. Our longitudinal studies have identified that increases in urinary albumin excretion through childhood are associated with the development of microalbuminuria and a generalized endotheliopathy linked to cardiovascular risk. Screening of participants re

An examination of the reciprocal relations between life satisfaction and social problem solving in early adolescents.

Theoretical and emerging empirical advances in the life satisfaction (LS) and social problem solving (SPS) literature suggest that LS and SPS may have bidirectional relations. The main purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis of bidirectionality between LS and two components of the SPS, orientation (SPS-O) and skills (SPS-S). Two waves of data were collected from a sample of 733 adolescents at a middle school over a 6-month period. Cross-lagged panel analysis results showed that statistically, LS significantly predicted SPS-O and SPS-S after six months; however, neither SPS-O nor SPS-S

[Insomnia in children and adolescents. A consensus document].

Insomnia is very common during childhood (30% of children under 5), and causes a serious cognitive and emotional consequence in learning, as well as significant medical comorbidity. It also affects the quality of life, not only of the child, but also of the whole family. Paediatrician training in its diagnosis and treatment is usually poor. For this reason a consensus document is presented on the management of insomnia in children and adolescents. This has been developed by members of the Spanish Paediatrics Association, the Spanish Sleep Society, the Spanish Society of Paediatric Outpatient a

Attachment and mentalization and their association with child and adolescent eating pathology: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Insecure attachment and mentalizing difficulties have been associated with eating pathology in adulthood. However, it is unclear whether eating pathology is associated with attachment or mentalization in children. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature in this emerging field. METHOD: Electronic databases were used to search for articles. RESULTS: Twenty-two studies were identified. In the 15 studies investigating attachment, an association with eating pathology was found in all studies. Mentalizing difficulties and eating pathology were found to be correl

The negative effects of prejudice on interpersonal relationships within adolescent peer groups.

Social development theories highlight the centrality of peer groups during adolescence and their role in socializing attitudes and behaviors. In this longitudinal study, we tested the effects of group-level prejudice on ensuing positive and negative interpersonal interactions among peers over a 7-month period. We used social network analysis to identify peer groups based on sociometric nominations, followed by multilevel modeling of the effects of sexual prejudice at the group level on interpersonal interactions among individuals in these groups. As hypothesized, the interpersonal interactions

Disclosure and Psychological Well-Being of Sexually Abused Adolescents in Hong Kong.

The role of disclosure on psychological well-being of adolescents with child sexual abuse experience was investigated in a subsample of 74 disclosers among 800 adolescents recruited in the community in Hong Kong. The results supported that CSA experiences have differential impact on adolescents' psychological well-being. Family characteristics of the disclosers accounted for only a small amount of the variance in an array of psychological well-being measures. CSA characteristics were robust predictors of disclosers' sexual eroticism and externalizing behavioral symptoms. Disclosers' cognitive
