Mixed-pathogen infective endocarditis is uncommon and may be difficult to recognize when the clinical course is prolonged and nonspecific. We report a case of mixed Candida albicans and Brucella melitensis native aortic valve endocarditis in a 37-year-old previously healthy man who presented with five months of intermittent fever, chills, anorexia, fatigue, 7 kg weight loss, progressive dyspnea, and intermittent chest pain. Physical examination revealed fever, sinus tachycardia, wide pulse pressure, elevated jugular venous pressure, bibasilar crackles, and a loud early diastolic murmur. Labora

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection with significant mortality, yet its burden is underestimated due to diagnostic limitations. The dynamics of naturally acquired anti-Leptospira antibodies, particularly during pregnancy, remain poorly understood. This study examined the seroincidence of leptospiral infection among a cohort of pregnant women and characterized longitudinal antibody kinetics in an endemic setting. Paired sera were collected from a population-based pregnancy cohort in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Women were enrolled before 12 weeks of gestation and followed up between 25-28 weeks.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation with fluctuating clinical severity. Although fecal calprotectin (FC) and fecal occult blood (FOBT) are established noninvasive biomarkers of intestinal inflammation, their interplay with nutritional status and disease activity has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore the relationship between FC, FOBT, and disease activity in IBD, and to assess the potential mediating role of nutritional status as measured by the progn

A killed, whole-cell vaccine was produced to induce immunity in dogs against leptospirosis. The vaccine, containing serovar Copenhageni, was produced and administered to 12 beagle dogs at both 8 and 12 weeks of age. Ten unvaccinated dogs of the same age group served as the control group. A live, virulent inoculum of Leptospira (1.52 × 109-4.40 × 109 leptospires per dog) was used to challenge the dogs at 2 weeks (Study 1) and 14 months (Study 2) post-booster vaccination. At regular intervals, pre- and post-challenge (PC), the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was performed to measure antibod

Leptospirosis is a globally significant zoonosis affecting animal health, productivity, and the environment. While typically associated with tropical climates, its persistence in semi-arid regions such as La Laguna, Mexico-characterized by low humidity, high temperatures, and limited water sources-remains poorly understood. Although these adverse environmental conditions theoretically limit the survival of Leptospira, high livestock density and synanthropic reservoirs (e.g., rodents) may compensate, facilitating transmission. In this cross-sectional study, blood sera from 445 dairy cows (28 he

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a globally distributed zoonosis with significant public and veterinary health implications. Domestic dogs serve both as sentinels and reservoirs, particularly in ecologically dynamic settings influenced by urbanization and climate change. However, the global understanding of canine leptospirosis remains fragmented due to inconsistent diagnostic practices and variable regional data.
OBJECTIVES: To synthesize global evidence on the seroprevalence, dominant serovars, and risk factors associated with Leptospira infection in domestic dogs, and to evaluate the implicati

BACKGROUND: Neurological signs, such as head tilt, torticollis, paralysis, and seizures, are common in rabbits. Differential diagnoses include two zoonotic infections caused by the microsporidial fungi Encephalitozoon cuniculi and the apicomplexan protozoa Toxoplasma gondii. Both infections are mainly latent in rabbits but may cause severe or even fatal disease. Although several international studies have reported the seroprevalence of these pathogens in different commercial rabbit populations, similar prevalence studies and risk-factor analyses among family-owned pet rabbits are uncommon and

BACKGROUND: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a major source of food-borne illness around the world. E. coli O157 has been widely reported as the most common STEC serogroup and has emerged as an important enteric pathogen. Cattle, in particular have been identified as a major E. coli O157:H7 reservoir of human infections; however, the prevalence of this organism in camels, sheep, and goats is less understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and concentration of E. coli serotype O157 in the feces of healthy camels (n = 140), cattle (n = 137), sheep (n = 141)

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease of worldwide importance, though relatively neglected in many African countries including sub Saharan Africa that is among areas with high burden of this disease. The disease is often mistaken for other febrile illnesses such as dengue, malaria, rickettsioses and enteric fever. Leptospirosis is an occupational disease likely to affect people working in environments prone to infestation with rodents which are the primary reservoir hosts of this disease. Some of the populations at risk include: sugarcane plantation workers, wetland farmers
