BACKGROUND: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement-augmented dynamic hip screws (DHS) have been used as a solution in unstable intertrochanteric fractures (ITF). Our aim was to investigate the complications in PMMA cement-augmented DHS.
METHODS: All patients who had received DHS plate osteosynthesis with or without PMMA cement augmentation from August 2005 to July 2009 in one medical center were retrospectively reviewed. The fractures were classified as unstable (31-A2.2, 31-A2.3 and 31-A3) on the basis of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen classification. Inclusion criteria were p

The influence of bone marrow autotransplantation on neurotransmitter structures of appendix vermiformis was studied. The study revealed that an increase in the number of neurotransmitter structures (mast and granular luminescent cells), having a high content of catecholamines and serotonin was noted in old rats in 40 min after bone marrow autotransplantation. In the center of vermiformis appendix lymphoid nodes reproduction cellular programmed differentiations having a high content of neuroamines are determined. In 2 hours after bone marrow autotransplantation their number decreases, the conte

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (also known as giant cell tumor of tendon sheath or pigmented villonodular synovitis) is a rare soft tissue tumor that arises from the tenosynovium of a tendon sheath or the synovium of a diarthrodial joint. This disease process occurs infrequently in the foot and ankle but can result in significant bone erosion and destructive changes of affected joints. These cases are challenging to treat, because the tumor most commonly presents in young, active patients and can be associated with extensive bone loss. We review a case of tenosynovial giant cell tumor of tendon

We present 3 cases of fibrous dysplasia of the maxillary sinus that were treated by decortication through the anterior wall of the maxilla. The thickened anterior wall of the maxilla and the zygoma were contoured into normal shape with a bur, and a 2 × 2-cm window was made below the infraorbital foramen using a reciprocating saw. The removed piece of bone was 3 to 5 mm thick. All abnormal fibrous tissues in the maxillary sinus were extirpated by drilling through the window until the sinus cavity was clear. The preserved bone plate was restored in place to close the window of the maxillary ante

Atrophy is most severe during the first month of post-extraction in the anterior maxilla with the degree of horizontal bone resorption being nearly twice as high as that of vertical bone resorption. The loss of the buccal alveolar plate following tooth extraction may lead to palatal implant positioning of the implants. Thus, immediate or early implant placement in the extraction socket has been suggested, because it would reduce the time period and the number of surgical intervention and yield higher patient satisfaction compared with delayed placed implants. However, placement of an implant i

The aim is to show our evolution for reconstruction of long bones in the child with free vascularized fibula after tumoral resection. Between 1990 and 2004, 78 children were operated on for sarcoma of long bones and one girl with congenital pseudarthrosis. The main applications are illustrated: U-shaped fibular transplant, fibular epiphysis with growth plate and diaphysis transfer, fibular graft associated to massive allograft. Follow-up of the children was performed by clinical examination and standard X-ray. No post operative death occurred. Many benign complications for femoral reconstructi

Achondroplasia is the most common genetic form of human dwarfism, for which there is presently no effective therapy. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is a newly identified molecule that regulates endochondral bone growth through GC-B, a subtype of particulate guanylyl cyclase. Here we show that targeted overexpression of CNP in chondrocytes counteracts dwarfism in a mouse model of achondroplasia with activated fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR-3) in the cartilage. CNP prevented the shortening of achondroplastic bones by correcting the decreased extracellular matrix synthesis in the gro

Endochondral bone development is a fascinating story of proliferation, maturation, and death. An understanding of this process at the molecular level is emerging. In particular, significant advances have been made in understanding the role of parathyroid-hormone-related peptide (PTHrP), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and the PTH/PTHrP receptor in endochondral bone development. Mutations of the PTH/PTHrP receptor have been identified in Jansen metaphyseal chondrodysplasia, Blomstrand's lethal chondrodysplasia, and enchondromatosis. Furthermore, genetic manipulations of the PTHrP, PTH, and the PTH/P

Four cases have been presented involving malpositioned premolars and molars that were brought into the arch. From the cases presented, it appears that aggressive surgical intervention to redirect ectopic premolars creates significant secondary problems. Interference with the bone surrounding the ectopic tooth may compromise the adjacent teeth and bone level. Pressure against the root of the impacted tooth may cause resorption. If the buccal or labial plate is removed, orthodontic movement will be impeded. Specific biochemical changes in bone are induced by the application of orthodontic forces

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a non-reversible degenerative disease characterized by progressive destruction of joint cartilage, formation of bone spurs, remodeling of subchondral bone plates, and inflammation of the synovium. Prim-O-glucosylcimifugin (POG) has been proven to have multiple biological activities such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, the precise mechanisms underlying POG's efficacy in OA remain to be elucidated.
PURPOSE: The study aims to systematically elucidate the molecular mechanism of POG in anti-osteoarthritis and provide a theoretical basis for…

The classic two-stage masquelet technique is an effective procedure for the treatment of large bone defects. Our group recently showed that one surgery could be saved by using a decellularized dermis membrane (DCD, Epiflex, DIZG). In addition, studies with bone substitute materials for defect filling show that it also appears possible to dispense with the removal of syngeneic cancellous bone (SCB), which is fraught with complications. The focus of this work was to clarify whether the SCB can be replaced by the granular demineralized bone matrix (g-DBM) or fibrous demineralized bone matrix (f-D

According to the literature, the development of the frontal sinus cavity is a result of the active immigration of cells from the ethmoidal complex into the os frontale. This migration theory is in contrast to the operative outcome of Apert's syndrome patients, after fronto-orbital advancement. When a fronto-orbital advancement at the age of a few months is performed in these patients while the frontal suture is yet closed, a sinus developed even the distance between nasal root and frontal bone bing up to 2 cm. In order to study the development of the frontal sinus, an animal study on 12 five-w

Cuboid compression fractures are rare injuries, usually occurring in combination with medial midfoot fractures or dislocations. During a three year period 12 patients with cuboid fractures were operatively treated at our institution. Eleven patients had involvement of the tarsometatarsal 4 and 5 joints, four of the calcaneocuboid joint, and three of both the proximal and distal joints. The lateral column was shortened in five patients. Open reduction was facilitated using a distracting external fixator. Iliac crest corticocancellous grafts were necessary in seven patients. Single or double pla

Mass spectrometry imaging is a developing technique that maps the molecular composition of samples in a label-free manner. However, highly heterogeneous samples, including bones, usually cannot be easily analyzed due to challenging sample preparation, particularly in minimizing cracks and maintaining flatness. To comprehensively address these issues, we developed a sample preparation method for the fresh frozen heterogeneous samples such as knee joint and skull of murine, which includes complex structures and tissue types, such as neuronal tissue, peripheral nerve, muscle, tracks, connective t

BACKGROUND: As a congenital metabolic bone disease caused by defective osteoclastic resorption of immature bone, osteopetrosis is characterized by diffused sclerosis of bones, brittle bones, easy fracturing, narrow medullary canals, and a weak fracture healing ability. At present, clear standards and principles for the treatment of fractures in patients with osteopetrosis are lacking. Non-operative treatment can prevent fracture hematoma and preserve the blood supply to the bone fragments, while being associated with frequent failures and higher mortality rates. Meanwhile, closed reduction and
