Isolation of Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 and other Shiga-like-toxin-producing E. coli from dairy cattle.

We examined 1,266 fecal specimens from healthy cattle during the investigations of two sporadic cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with raw milk consumption and an outbreak of gastroenteritis and hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7. We collected specimens from heifers, calves, and adult cows on 22 farms, in a stockyard, and in a packing house. We also collected 3 raw hamburger specimens from a restaurant and 23 raw milk samples from two farms. All specimens were examined for E. coli O157:H7 by using sorbitol-MacConkey agar, H immobilization, O157 ag…

Reticulo-ruminal motility in cattle (Bos indicus) and water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) fed a low quality roughage diet.

1. The effect of A and B sequence contractions of the reticulo-rumen on passage rate of digesta was compared in buffaloes and cattle fed low quality rhodes grass. 2. Both species ate the same amount per unit body weight but buffaloes spent 53% more time ruminating than cattle. 3. Buffaloes had fewer A and B sequence contractions each day and the rate of these contractions during eating, ruminating and at rest were slower. 4. A larger pool of fine feed particles in the rumen of buffaloes, generated by extra ruminating activity was associated with the 30% shorter mean residence time of particula…

Serological relationship between a large Babesia found in Japanese cattle and Babesia major, B bigemina and B bovis.

Immunofluorescent methods were used to study the serological relationships between a Japanese Babesia species and three other Babesia species (B major, B bigemina and B bovis). All the sera were obtained at intervals from five splenectomised calves each infected experimentally with five strains of the four parasites. The antibody titre of each serum was determined by the use of homologous and heterologous antigens. The reactions between homologous antigens and their serial antisera were consistently higher than those obtained with heterologous antigens. It was concluded that the Japanese Babes

[Food poisoning in cattle caused by ingestion of brewers' grains contaminated with Clostridium botulinum type B (author's transl)].

In 1977, outbreaks of disease associated with serious losses occurred on twenty cattle farms. This disease was due to the fact that the animals had been fed brewers' grains. The clinical picture was marked by anorexia, profuse salivation, regurgitation and dehydration. The course of the disease varied with the severity of the attack. Toxicological tests were negative. Cl. botulinum type B as well as toxin type B were found to be present in the brewers' grains fairly often. As a rule, Cl. botulinum was also detected in the rumen contents and faeces. The treatment of the animals is described; th…

Resistance in cattle to Fasciola hepatica induced by gamma-ray attenuated larvae: results from a controlled field trial.

A significant resistance to natural infection in the field was obtained in calves inoculated with metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica attenuated at a gamma-irradiation level of 3 Krad. The mean fluke burden of vaccinated calves was 29 per cent of that of the controls. The resistance was reflected not only in reduced parasite burdens and low faecal egg counts, but also in the stability of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase levels of the vaccinated calves compared with non-vaccinated controls. The gamma-ray dose of 3 Krad did not prevent a small proportion of the irradiated larvae reaching and maturing

Serum-gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (gamma-GT) and aspartate-aminotransferase (AspAT) activities in adult cattle with chronic Fasciola hepatica infection.

Sera from adult cattle with fluke-infected and normal livers were analyzed for γ-GT and AspAT activities. The analyses revealed no significant increases in either γ-GT or AspAT values of the animals with fascioliasis as compared with the non-infected animals. The advanced chronic stage of the infection characterized by hepatic fibrosis, limited injury of parenchyma and low fluke burdens may explain the lack of enzymatic increase.

Acidification with acetic or sulfuric acid: Effects on NH3 and N2O emission from cattle and pig slurry applied to grassland.

Ammonia (NH₃) emissions from slurry application contribute to air pollution, ecosystem acidification and nitrogen loss, while nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions contribute to climate change. Sulfuric acid is commonly used to reduce NH₃ emissions, but safety concerns and sulfur accumulation in soil have prompted interest in alternatives such as acetic acid. We compared the effects of both acids on NH₃ and N₂O emissions following cattle and pig slurry application to grassland in Denmark. Sulfuric acid was added at 3.0 and 2.9 kg t-1 to cattle and pig slurry, respectively; corresponding acetic acid do…

Detection of antibodies to avian influenza virus H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in naturally infected cattle for more than a year.

Cattle were not previously thought susceptible to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus infection until March 2024, when outbreaks were reported among dairy cattle. Data are sparse regarding the immune response of cattle to infections with such viruses. To better understand the systemic humoral immune responses of HPAI H5N1-infected dairy cattle, we conducted a prospective study of 15 cows on an H5N1-affected farm. The cows' sera were studied using microneutralization (MN), hemagglutination inhibition, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. At four months post-outbreak, MN assay…

Evaluation of acute phase protein, cardiac marker, and antioxidant enzymes in Madura Cattle infected with foot-and-mouth disease.

BACKGROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease in cloven-hoofed animals and remains a significant cause of economic loss in the livestock sector. In addition to causing characteristic clinical symptoms, FMD infection triggers a systemic inflammatory response and oxidative stress that can alter various biochemical and cardiac parameters. However, information on the biochemical and antioxidant profiles of local Indonesian cattle, particularly Madura cattle, remains limited. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate changes in acute phase proteins (APPs), cardiac markers, …

In conclusion, HS significantly alters the miRNA profile of pre-ovulatory FF-EVs in dairy cattle. Most of the DE-miRNA modulate ovarian function and follicular physiology, potentially explaining the reduced fertility observed in heat-stressed cows.

Multi-omics dissection of heat stress reveals CIITA as a central regulator of metabolic thermotolerance in cattle (Bos taurus).

Climate-driven heat stress disrupts metabolic homeostasis in livestock, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptive responses remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated newly generated plasma metabolomic data from 111 heat-stressed cows with previously published whole-genome sequencing datasets from the same animals, identifying 30 metabolic markers and 27 copy number variations (CNVs) associated with 25 candidate genes involved in the regulation of these metabolites. Notably, a CNV hotspot encompassing CIITA emerged as a key pleiotropic locus strongly associated with acylcarnitine lev

Dynamics of the Microbiome and Antibiotic Resistome in Hyper-Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Cattle Manure Assisted with Granular Activated Carbon.

The use of conductive materials, such as granular activated carbon (GAC), for optimization of the anaerobic digestion (AD) process has garnered attention in recent years; however, its impact on the dynamics of the microbiome and resistome in continuous AD systems remains unclear, especially under temperature variation. This study combined culture-based bacterial enumeration and shotgun metagenomics to investigate the impact of two GAC application strategies, suspended and packed, on the fate of pathogens (viable Escherichia coli) and ARGs during the AD of cattle manure at 40 and 45 °C. The res…

A mechanistic model to represent the mode of action of 3-nitrooxypropanol in the rumen of dairy cattle: Impact on methanogenesis and rumen fermentation.

The feed additive 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) has been proven effective in reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions. Its effectiveness depends on dosage level and characteristics of the basal diet, but the biological causes driving this variability are not completely understood. Our aim was to develop a mechanistic model to represent the mode of action of 3-NOP in the rumen considering the kinetics of methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR) inhibition, alternative H2 utilization pathways (i.e., reductive acetogenesis and ethanol formation), and methanogen population responses to 3-NOP, to enable accu

Economic models to estimate changes in herd sustainability and structure associated with clinical cure failure of metritis in dairy cattle.

This study aimed to evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of clinical cure failure of metritis in dairy herds using a dynamic Markov chain model. Metritis incidence was set at 25% of postpartum cows, with 3 scenarios simulated over a 10-yr horizon: base (no metritis), cured (all metritis cases cured), and not cured (no cases cured). Herd size was constrained to 900 to 1,000 milking cows, and all metritis cases were treated with ceftiofur crystalline-free acid. Outputs from year 10 (steady-state herd) were used for comparison. Total herd population was greatest in the not cured scenar

[Development and application of a triplex basic- recombinase polymerase amplification method to detect Brucella, Babesia, and Pasteurella multocida in cattle].

To combat three major pathogens-Brucella spp.,Babesia bovis, and Pasteurella multocida-threatening cattle health, we developed a rapid and accurate triplex basic-recombinase polymerase amplification (Basic-RPA) detection system. Targeting bcsp31, rap-1, and kmt1, we designed and screened specific RPA primers and optimized the reaction temperature, time, and primer concentration. The best reaction conditions were 38 ℃ for 25 min, with primers at 10 μmol/L in a 1:1:1 ratio. We then used reference and non-target strains to evaluate the specificity of the established method and serial DNA dilution…
