Liver metastases of colorectal carcinomas were diagnosed by computed tomography in 116 patients. Several control examinations were made during the course of the disease. The therapeutic effect on the metastases is defined by measurements of the tissular density. Patients submitted to dearterialization or local chemotherapy showed a higher incidence of regressive tumor calcifications and necroses than untreated patients ans patients treated by systemic chemotherapy. A computer simulation model was used to study work flow and queueing problems in blood collection. Donor scheduling strategies, such as stream and block arrivals, were compared with random arrival at a constant hourly rate. Controlling donor queueing required keeping donor arrivals from exceeding the system capacity, rather than using any one type of scheduling strategy. This paper's objective is to present a proposed solution of Computer-based Speech Therapy System (CBST) for dyslalia screening. The problem of Speech Sound Disorders (SSD) is enunciated, and a brief presentation of several general CBST solutions is made. An Entropy-based method is proposed and the current state of advancement in the development and experimental validation of this solution is presented and discussed. Conclusions related to future improvements of the method are drawn based on the consequences identified in the final section.

Pulmonary cysts, cavities, and honeycombing are seen in a number of systemic disorders. The purpose of this review is to discuss the findings on thin-section computed tomography (CT) in both congenital and acquired multisystem conditions that give rise to multiple cystic spaces in the lungs. Conditions discussed include lymphangioleiomyomatosis, Langerhan's cell histiocytosis, lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, and Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, with reference to specific features that may be helpful in the differentiation of these conditions on CT.

The Stepper tool was developed to assist a knowledge engineer in developing a computable version of narrative guidelines. The system is document-centric: it formalises the initial text in multiple user-definable steps corresponding to interactive XML transformations. In this paper, we report on experience obtained by applying the tool on a narrative guideline document addressing unstable angina pectoris. We report a 14-year-old boy with systemic lupus erythematosus and anticardiolipin antibodies. He developed asymptomatic superior vena cava thrombosis and silent pulmonary embolism. Computed tomographic scan of his chest and abdomen showed features of long standing obstruction secondary to superior vena cava thrombosis. Asymptomatic thrombosis of the major vessels and silent pulmonary emboli are part of the disease spectrum of pediatric antiphospholipid syndrome.

The authors administered 48 mg of intravenous cocaine or placebo to eight abstinent cocaine users in a double-blind, crossover design and examined blood flow using single photon emission computed tomography. Cocaine produced significant decreases in frontal cortical and basal ganglia blood flow; these latter correlated negatively with increases in self-ratings of "rush" and "high." The authors conclude that these local effects are compatible with dopaminergic system involvement.

Twenty-one patients were examined with computer tomography following subarachnoid injection of metrizamide (Amipaque). Five were evaluated because of dementia or possible obstructive hydrocephalus. The remainder were referred for lumbar or cervical myelography and served as controls. Concentration and distribution of the contrast medium within the cranial subarachnoid space and ventricular system depend upon a composite of the physical properties of the contrast medium, patient positioning and activity and CSF physiology.

A flow-system instrument is described in which the laser light scattered by a mammalian cell is sampled simultaneously at up to 32 angles between 0 degrees and 21 degrees from the laser beam axis as the cell passes through the beam. The scatter pattern for each cell is stored by a computer for later analysis. Various data-processing techniques are discussed. Results of preliminary application of the instrument to the analysis of normal and abnormal gynecologic specimens are presented.
