Bioimaging of sense organs and the central nervous system in extant fishes and reptiles in situ: A review.

Bioimaging is changing the field of sensory biology, especially for taxa that are lesser-known, rare, and logistically difficult to source. When integrated with traditional neurobiological approaches, developing an archival, digital repository of morphological images can offer the opportunity to improve our understanding of whole neural systems without the issues of surgical intervention and negate the risk of damage and artefactual interpretation. This review focuses on current approaches to bioimaging the peripheral (sense organs) and central (brain) nervous systems in extant fishes (cartila

Superior detection of low-allele burden Janus kinase 2 V617F mutation and monitoring clonal evolution in myeloproliferative neoplasms using chip-based digital PCR.

The JAK2 V617F is a prevalent driver mutation in Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (Ph-MPNs), significantly affecting disease progression, immunophenotype, and patient outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines highlight the JAK2 V617F mutation as one of the key diagnostic criterions for Ph-MPNs. In this study, we analyzed 283 MPN samples with the JAK2 V617F mutation to assess the effectiveness of three detection technologies: chip-based digital PCR (cdPCR), real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Additionally, we inves

A Scoping Review on Malaria Prevention and Control Intervention in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States (FCAS): A Need for Renewed Focus to Enhance International Cooperation.

Malaria is a major public health problem in developing countries. The burden of malaria in fragile and conflict-affected states (FCAS) is increasing year by year. Moreover, the population living in FCAS is often the most vulnerable and at high risk of malaria due to factors, such as deteriorating healthcare system, mass relocations, and reduced resilience to shocks. Therefore, this scoping review aims to map the interventions that are conducted at the FCAS on malaria prevention among the general population. In addition, this review can help policy-makers and international health bodies, provid

Feasibility study of an automated Strabismus screening Test using Augmented Reality and Eye-tracking (STARE).

BACKGROUND: New digital technologies (augmented reality headsets, eye-tracking) may potentially allow for automated assessments of ocular misalignment. Here, we evaluate the feasibility of a novel, open-source strabismus test ("STARE") as an automated screening tool. METHODS: Work progressed in 2 phases. In phase 1 ("development"), we used Fresnel prisms to elicit horizontal misalignments of known magnitude (1-40 prism dioptres) in orthotropic controls. In phase 2 ("validation"), we applied the system to adults with an established diagnosis of strabismus, and quantified the ability of the tes

Automatic foot ulcer segmentation using conditional generative adversarial network (AFSegGAN): A wound management system.

Effective wound care is essential to prevent further complications, promote healing, and reduce the risk of infection and other health issues. Chronic wounds, particularly in older adults, patients with disabilities, and those with pressure, venous, or diabetic foot ulcers, cause significant morbidity and mortality. Due to the positive trend in the number of individuals with chronic wounds, particularly among the growing elderly and diabetes populations, it is imperative to develop novel technologies and practices for the best practice clinical management of chronic wounds to minimize the pote

Aminoglycoside induced ototoxicity risk in the cystic fibrosis population: The utility of large-scale screening.

BACKGROUND: MT-RNR1 variants are a well-known cause of aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss (AIHL). Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) routinely receive aminoglycosides and are at high risk of AIHL. However, genetic testing before treatment is not routinely performed due to perceived rarity of risk, and cost ineffectiveness with traditional technologies. AIM: Assess the utility of large-scale screening for AIHL risk in the CF population, using digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR), a novel and scalable low-cost molecular technique. METHODS: Using a clinically validated ddPCR as

RNA-based biomarkers for the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic response monitoring of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer (CaP) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the urinary tract. The current recommendations for CaP diagnosis rely on the prostate-specific antigen levels and a digital rectal examination for anatomical abnormalities. However, these diagnostic tools are not highly sensitive. In particular, prostate-specific antigen has a low positive predictive value (approximately 30%). Thus, there is a need to develop biomarkers to improve the early clinical detection of CaP. Several novel technologies enable the identification of biomarkers from diverse sources, including the urine, serum,

Frugal 3D scanning using smartphones provides an accessible framework for capturing the external ear.

Three-dimensional (3D) scanning technologies, such as medical imaging and surface scanning, have important applications for capturing patient anatomy to create personalised prosthetics. Digital approaches for capturing anatomical detail as opposed to traditional, invasive impression techniques significantly reduces turnaround times and lower production costs while still maintaining the high aesthetic quality of the end product. While previous case studies utilise expensive 3D scanning and modelling frameworks, their clinical translation is limited due to high equipment costs. In this study, we

From reverse innovation to global innovation in animal health: A review.

Reverse innovation refers to learning from or diffusion of innovations developed in low income settings and further translated to industrialized countries. There is lack of consensus regarding terminology, but the idea that innovations in low-income countries are promising for adoption in high-income contexts is not new. However, in healthcare literature globally, the vast majority of publications referring to 'disruptive innovation' were published in the last ten years. To assess the potential of innovative developments and technologies for improving animal health, we initiated a literature r
