The textile web as a probiotic interface.

Microbiome of the Built Environment research exhibits a marked 'hard-surface bias', overlooking the dynamic soft materials that dominate human-microbial exchange. We propose a theoretical reorientation: the home as a textile web of dynamic, porous microbial reactors. Grounded in immunology's Danger Theory and the principle of 'tissue-based class control', these soft interfaces function as an external tissue analog. By treating textiles as designable interfaces (ranging from airway exchange nodes to laundry bioreactors), architecture becomes a site for proactive probiotic rituals. This framewor

Virulence of Mycobacterium avium Subsp. hominissuis Isolated From Feline Thyroid and Pancreatic Tissues in a Murine Infection Model.

Mycobacteria infection is a serious public health problem and has been described as causing diseases in domestic animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the immunopathogenesis of Mycobacterium avium subspecies hominissuis isolated from a domestic cat in mice. Mice were intravenously infected with 106 CFU, and the spleen, lung, liver, and submandibular glands were collected for a histopathology study and bacillary load evaluation. Lung cells, such as macrophages, NK1.1 cells, and CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes were evaluated by flow cytometry. The infection spread to the liver, lungs,

Saying, Doing, Talking, Listening: A Mixed Methods Study of Fathers' Involvement in Childcare and Household Work Tasks and Responsibilities.

This article examines how methodological approaches shape understandings of domestic responsibilities. Using mixed methods data from Canadian dual-earner households, we compare fathers' individual survey responses with couple interview accounts about their childcare and housework involvement. Survey and interview data align when assessing tasks - discrete actions with defined boundaries - but diverge when evaluating responsibilities, which involve anticipating needs, managing care and organizing household life. These discrepancies also reflect how gendered and racialized expectations can influ

First report of a cat (Felis catus) infected by Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis from Southeastern Brazil.

Feline leishmaniasis is increasingly recognized as a disease affecting cats worldwide, with notable prevalence in regions surrounding the Mediterranean Basin and in Brazil. An approximately one-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with small papules and nodules (2 mm) on the nasal planum. Physical examination and routine blood analyses were normal. The cat tested negative for FIV and FeLV. Skin biopsies of the lesions were conducted, removing the nodules entirely due to their small size. The samples were submitted for histopathological and molecular analysis. Histopathology confirmed

Sheep serve as amplifying hosts of Japanese encephalitis virus, increasing the risk of human infection.

The transmission cycle of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), involving pigs and birds as amplifying hosts and mosquitoes as vectors, was elucidated in the 1950s. However, factors contributing to this cycle remain unclear. Here, sheep were infected with a JEV strain isolated from sheep exhibiting neurological symptoms. The results revealed that sheep are susceptible to JEV infection and develop viremia, with levels and duration comparable to those observed in pigs, a known JEV-amplifying host. Mosquitoes fed viremic sheep blood showed an infection rate of 40.6 to 57.1%. These findings indicate

[Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment for lateral lymph node metastasis of rectal cancer (2024 edition)].

Lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM) is common in mid-low rectal cancer and is also a major cause of postoperative local recurrence. Currently, there is still controversy regarding the diagnosis and treatment of LLNM in rectal cancer. This consensus, based on the "Chinese Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of Lateral Lymph Node Metastasis in Rectal Cancer (2019 edition)," incorporates the latest domestic and international research findings and revises aspects related to the diagnosis, treatment strategies, follow-up, and management of recurrence of LLNM in rectal cancer. A total of 42 domest

Peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis due to Pasteurella multocida in Australia.

Domestic animals are common in Australian households; however, there is little research into the potential risks these animals pose to patients undergoing in-home peritoneal dialysis (PD). Cats and dogs are known to carry many potential pathogens, including Pasteurella multocida. We reviewed the ANZDATA Peritoneal Dialysis Peritonitis Registry for cases of peritonitis due to Pasteurella multocida between 2011 and 2023. Cases identified were younger and more likely to be female compared with the Australian PD population who developed peritonitis due to other organisms. Of the total 32 episodes,

Japanese Encephalitis Enzootic and Epidemic Risks across Australia.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is an arboviral, encephalitogenic, zoonotic flavivirus characterized by its complex epidemiology whose transmission cycle involves reservoir and amplifying hosts, competent vector species and optimal environmental conditions. Although typically endemic in Asia and parts of the Pacific Islands, unprecedented outbreaks in both humans and domestic pigs in southeastern Australia emphasize the virus' expanding geographical range. To estimate areas at highest risk of JEV transmission in Australia, ecological niche models of vectors and waterbirds, a sample of pigger

Pasteurella Multocida Urinary Tract Infection in a Susceptible Patient with Non-Traumatic Feline Contact.

Pasteurella multocida is a part of the normal oral flora of domestic animals. Humans can develop skin and soft tissue infections from P. multocida after traumatic animal contact, usually through bites and scratches from domestic animals. Although rare, there have been documented case reports where P. multocida has been isolated from patients even after minimal casual animal contact. Even rarer, is the isolation of P. multocida from urine. The few documented cases of urine isolation have been described in patients who have underlying medical conditions, particularly those with urologic abnormal

Foodborne botulism: A brief review of cases transmitted by cheese products (Review).

Food safety constitutes a basic priority for public health. Foodborne botulism occurs worldwide; it is an acute paralytic disease caused by the consumption of food containing the botulinum toxin. Growing consumer demand for cheese products could result in increased exposure of the population to this toxin, and thus the risk of foodborne botulism. The majority of cases of botulism caused by dairy products are related to cheese products specifically. Epidemic outbreaks and isolated cases have been reported over time. Domestically canned foods are still among the primary causes of the disease. Ch

Serological prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in cats (Belém, Pará, Brazil).

We evaluated the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in the serum samples collected from domestic cats in Belém, Pará, Brazil. We also correlated the presence of T. gondii antibodies with environmental variables and cat-owner habits. Four-hundred and forty-seven serum samples from domestic cats were analyzed. The sera were tested using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. Among the animals analyzed, 21.92% (98/447) were seropositive. A statistically significant association was found in relation to age and serology among the animals over 1 year old (p<0.01): in the group up to 1 ye

Mediastinal histoplasmosis with cardiac involvement in a cat.

Histoplasmosis is the second most common fungal infection reported among domestic felines in the United States. Dissemination of the organism after inoculation is common and affected organ systems include the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, reticuloendothelial organs, skeletal system, integument, and ocular system. However, histoplasmosis presenting as a discrete granulomatous mass identified on echocardiogram has never been reported in the veterinary literature. Here, we describe the first case of feline histoplasmosis presenting as a granuloma with cardiac involvement. The patient

Physical and sexual violence on college campuses: considerations for international students.

Physical and sexual violence are pervasive concerns on college campuses. Previous research indicates minority populations may be at increased risk for exposure to violence, therefore, international students may represent a vulnerable population. The present study examined differences between international and domestic students regarding the experience of violence and variables related to violence intervention. Participants: Domestic and international colleges students (n = 829) at a Midwestern university in the United States participated in an online survey. Method: Questions assessed experien

Feline Phaeohyphomycotic Cerebellitis Caused by Cladosporium cladosporioides-complex: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Cerebellar phaeohyphomycosis was diagnosed in an 8-year-old neutered male domestic cat. Gross lesions were limited to the cerebellum, which had a focally extensive dark brown-black, soft, irregular area affecting the cortex and white matter of the left hemisphere and extending to the reticular formation. Microscopically, multifocal pyogranulomatous meningoencephalitis with intralesional pigmented fungal hyphae effaced the cerebellar grey and white matter. Fungal hyphae were 3-6 μm in diameter, septate and non-dichotomously branched, with parallel, thin and slightly bulbous walls. Polymerase ch

Occurrence of four Anaplasma species with veterinary and public health significance in sheep, northwestern China.

The members of the genus Anaplasma are important tick-borne rickettsial bacteria of veterinary and public health significance. Domestic ruminants are important reservoir hosts for several Anaplasma species. In this study, the occurrence of Anaplasma spp. was investigated by PCR in domestic small ruminants from Gansu, northwestern China. The results showed a high prevalence of Anaplasma spp. (46.2%, 201/435) in sheep. The average infection rates were 5.7%, 24.4%, 28.0% and 18.2% for A. ovis, A. bovis, A. phagocytophilum and A. capra, respectively. Coinfection of different Anaplasma species occu

Traumatic Myiasis: A Neglected Disease in a Changing World.

Traumatic myiasis, the parasitic infestation by fly larvae in traumatic lesions of the tissues of living vertebrates, is a serious medical condition in humans and a welfare and economic issue in domestic animals. New molecular studies are providing insights into its evolution and epidemiology. Nevertheless, its incidence in humans is generally underreported, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Myiasis in domestic animals has been studied more extensively, but continuous management is difficult and expensive. A key concern is the inadvertent introduction and global spread of agent

Specific patterns of canine scavenging in indoor settings.

Postmortem animal mutilations due to domestic dogs in isolated domestic deaths are taphonomic modifications regularly observed by forensic pathologists. They are rarely described in the literature; however, even though they present specific patterns. Through 41 cases, 10 at the forensic institute in Lille (France) and 31 at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (USA), plus 22 cases from the literature, specific locations and patterns of postmortem scavenging lesions are proposed. These lesions are mainly distributed in three locations: the face, especially the nose and the mouth (

Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) Infection in Farmed Ruminants in Three Northeastern Provinces and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China.

Coxiella burnetii is the pathogenic agent of Q fever, a zoonosis that occurs worldwide. In China, the organism infects people and a wide range of wild and farmed animals. However, little is known about C. burnetii infection in farmed ruminants in northeastern China, and there appears to have been no previous study on sika deer. The present study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in farmed ruminants in this region of China. A total of 3147 domestic ruminants (784 sheep, 1016 cattle, and 1347 sika deer) were randomly collected for this study. An indirect enzyme-linked
