The natural progression of nephropathic cystinosis to end stage renal disease can be delayed, sometimes by many years, by the reducing agent, cysteamine, which lowers intracellular cystine content to near normal. We report on two patients with nephropathic cystinosis who were treated with cysteamine and developed structural genitourinary abnormalities which may have contributed to an increase in the rate of decline of renal function. Twelve patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were treated with piroxicam (Hotemin-EGIS) for 9-18 (mean: 13.7) months. A … s seen. Diagnostic and therapeutic indications have increased the need for ready access to the inferior vena cava. Multiple anomalies of the inferior vena cava have been described. Correct placement of a Greenfield filter in a left-sided vena cava requires recognition of this anomaly. Placement through a right internal jugular vein is preferable; however, if this is not possible, the left femoral vein should be used. Because of the incidence of anomalous inferior vena cava, routine inferior venacavography is recommended when an intracaval device is to be placed.

The renal pharmacologic effects of intravenous dopamine in doses of 0.5-3.0 micrograms/kg/min include increases in renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, solute excretion, and urine flow. Nytrel monofilament polyamide filters have recently been strongly advocated as a cheap reusable method for filtering urine in field studies of Schistosoma haematobium endemic areas. We examined 1230 persons in a highly endemic area, filtering 10 ml urine through Nytrel filters and counting the eggs retained. It was found that staining Nytrel filters speeded up the counting process and made the detection of light infections much easier. The development of proteinuria and its response to insulin therapy in acute experimental diabetes was examined in 11 female rats by sequenti … betes. Elevated proteinuria was not associated with lysozymuria or consistent changes in glomerular filtration rate. The rapid fluctuations in proteinuria attending acute diabetes and its effective treatment suggest that metabolic aberrations of diabetes may directly effect renal handling of proteins.

Renal function during indomethacin treatment was studied in 12 premature infants with patent ductus arteriosus. Decreases in urinary flow rate, GFR, and CH2O by 56, 27, and 66%, respectively, occurred during Indo therapy. Urinary excretion rates of ions were also reduced: Na by 70%, Cl by 79%, K by 40%. These changes were accompanied by slight decreases in plasma sodium concentration and osmolality. Except for GFR and urinary Na and osmolality, all these functions returned to pretreatment values one to two weeks after stopping the drug.
