Perceived Social Support, Contact Violence Experience, and Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk among Gambian Female Sex Workers: A LASSO-Guided, Causal Inference, and Multilevel Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) face disproportionate risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS and various forms of violence. Although social support is generally considered protective against adverse health outcomes, its relationship with STI risk in high-risk population remains unclear. This study was conducted to determine and quantify key determinants of lifetime STI occurrence among FSWs in The Gambia, with a particular focus on violence experience and social support. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used, with secondary analysis of data from 429 FSWs

Establishing shared definitions of virological failure and discontinuation for long-acting injectable cabotegravir and rilpivirine therapy (the CONSENSUS-LAI Study): an international survey and Delphi process.

BACKGROUND: Definitions of virological failure and treatment discontinuation for long-acting injectable (LAI) cabotegravir and rilpivirine antiretroviral therapy are inconsistent in clinical practice and observational studies, which complicates interpretation and implementation of findings. The CONSENSUS-LAI study aimed to establish consistent definitions of virological failure and treatment discontinuation to enhance evidence transferability and support optimal clinical outcomes. METHODS: The study had two phases. Phase 1 was an international online survey exploring existing definitions of v

Mental health and cognition in relation to adherence to antiretroviral therapy among people living with HIV in Kazakhstan: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: There is a research gap in how mental health and cognition are associated with antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Kazakhstan. METHODS: We randomly selected and enrolled 230 PLWH from the Almaty City AIDS Center registry (June-November 2019) into a cross-sectional study. We examined associations between self-reported ART adherence for the last 1 and 2 weeks; the Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES) and symptoms of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]), anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder tool [GAD-7]), post-traumatic st

A Retrospective Review of Serious Adverse Drug Reaction Reports in the Nigerian VigiFlow Database from September 2004 to December 2016.

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a source of concern in healthcare as they negatively affect patients. Serious adverse drug reactions (SADRs) have an even greater impact on patients and the system in terms of morbidity and financial burden. The establishment of National Pharmacovigilance Centers (NPCs) has enhanced ADR reporting in Africa. The Nigerian Pharmacovigilance Centre has been collecting ADR reports using VigiFlow since 2004. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify and analyze SADR reports in the Nigerian VigiFlow database in order to profile the patients with S

Progress Toward Hepatitis B Control and Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus - Western Pacific Region, 2005-2017.

Hepatitis B vaccine (HepB), which has been available since 1982, provides lifelong protection against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and the associated 20%-30% increased lifetime risk for developing cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma among >95% of vaccine recipients (1). Before HepB introduction into national childhood immunization schedules, the estimated hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) prevalence in the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region (WPR)* was >8% in 1990 (2). In 2005, the WPR was the first WHO region to establish a hepatitis B control goal, with an initial

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for muscle weakness in adults with advanced disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with progressive diseases often experience muscle weakness, which impacts adversely on levels of independence and quality of life. In those who are unable or unwilling to undertake traditional forms of exercise, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) may provide an alternative method of enhancing leg muscle strength. Programmes appear to be well tolerated and have led to improvements in muscle function, exercise capacity and quality of life. However, estimates regarding the effectiveness of NMES from individual studies lack power and precision. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: to

Pathologically-activated therapeutics for neuroprotection: mechanism of NMDA receptor block by memantine and S-nitrosylation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Vascular dementia represent the most common forms of dementia. If left unabated, the economic cost of caring for patients with these maladies would consume the entire gross national product of the industrialized world by the middle of this century. Until recently, the only available drugs for this condition were cholinergic treatments, which symptomatically enhance cognitive state to some degree, but they were not neuroprotective. Many potential neuroprotective drugs tested in clinical trials failed because of intolerable side effects. However, after our discovery

MDR- and CYP3A4-mediated drug-herbal interactions.

According to recent epidemiological reports, almost 40% of American population use complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) during their lifetime. Patients detected with HIV or cancer often consume herbal products especially St. John's wort (SJW) for antidepressants in combination with prescription medicines. Such self-administered herbal products along with prescribed medicines raise concerns of therapeutic activity due to possible drug-herbal interactions. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) together constitute a highly efficient barrier for many orally absorbed drugs.

Hi-fun, homepas and incidental sex with drugs: a qualitative study developing a locally grounded definition of hi-fun (chemsex) compared to other sexualised drug use types practiced by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men's (GBMSM) sexualised drug use, defined as taking psychoactive drugs before or during sex, is the focus of public health concern globally. 'Hi-fun' in Thailand (similar to the practice of 'chemsex' in Western settings) is a subset of sexualised drug use. Much harm reduction programming relies on Western chemsex definitions, obscuring critical variation related to local cultures, drug markets and legislative contexts. We aimed to develop, informed by transnational queer sociology, a locally grounded definition of hi-fun compared to ot

Multilevel factors associated with self-reported sexually transmitted infections among sexually active women in Africa: a socio-ecological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to pose a significant public health challenge globally, negatively impacting reproductive health and increasing the likelihood of infertility, complications during pregnancy, and mother-to-child transmission. Despite the increasing burden of self-reported (SR) STIs, there is limited evidence on their prevalence and associated factors across Africa. Applying the socio-ecological model (SEM), this study sought to estimate the prevalence and identify the factors associated with SR-STIs among sexually active women in Africa. METHODS: The

Exploring the Association Between Behavioral Determinants and Intention to Use a Chatbot-Led Parenting Intervention by Caregivers of Adolescent Girls in South Africa: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: While digital innovation, including chatbots, offers a potentially cost-effective means to scale public health programs in low-income settings, user engagement rates remain low. Barriers to participant engagement (eg, perceived difficulty of use, busyness, low levels of digital literacy) may exacerbate inequality when adopting digital-only interventions as alternatives to in-person programs. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study nested within a 2×2 clustered factorial trial that followed the Multiphase Optimization Strategy principles investigated the relationship between behavior

Diagnostic accuracy of the BD MAX MDR-TB assay on sputum and tongue swabs for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex detection in adults under investigation for TB in South Africa.

UNLABELLED: Despite the availability of molecular diagnostics, only 48% of newly diagnosed tuberculosis (TB) cases were confirmed using nucleic acid amplification tests in 2023. The MAX Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MAX MDR-TB) assay detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and resistance to rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH), but data on clinical performance are limited. This study assessed the assay's performance on sputum and tongue swabs (TSs). The assay was evaluated for MTBC detection and RIF and INH resistance profiling on sputum using liquid culture as the reference and

Assessment of Sexual Violence Risk Perception in Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal for the Development and Validation of "G-Date".

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence (SV) is a significant problem for sexual minorities, including men who have sex with men (MSM). The limited research suggests SV is associated with a host of syndemic conditions. These factors tend to cluster and interact to worsen one another. Unfortunately, while much work has been conducted to examine these factors in heterosexual women, there is a lack of research examining MSM, especially their SV risk perception. Further, MSM are active users of dating and sexual networking (DSN) mobile apps, and this technology has demonstrated usefulness for creating safe sp
