The practice of puxa-puxa among Mozambican women: a systematic inventory of motives.

Puxa-puxa is the elongation of the labia minora of the genital organs. It is one of the most widespread genital practices among women in Mozambique, and the practice seems to be specific to this country. The motives underlying this practice and its abandonment were examined in a theory-driven way. A total of 616 women currently living in the provinces of Maputo, Zambezia, and Nampula, aged 18 to 62, were presented with one of two questionnaires that contained items about possible motives for practicing puxa-puxa or possible motives for not practicing it. Seven separable motives for practicing

Knowledge is power? The role of experiential knowledge in genetically 'risky' reproductive decisions.

Knowledge of the condition being tested for is increasingly acknowledged as an important factor in prenatal testing and screening decisions. An analysis of the way in which family members living with an inheritable condition use and value this knowledge has much to add to debates about whether and how this type of knowledge could be made available to prospective parents facing screening decisions. This article reports on in-depth interviews (conducted between 2007 and 2009) with 61 people with a genetic condition, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in their family. Many participants reported that t

Presymptomatic genetic testing in CADASIL.

Genetic counselling has been poorly investigated in cerebrovascular diseases. Characteristics, motivations and long-term outcome of presymptomatic tests (PT) in subjects at risk of CADASIL (Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy) were investigated at the National Centre for Rare Vascular Diseases of the Brain and/or Retina (CERVCO). Sociodemographic, motivational and psychological variables were collected between 2003 and 2010 for PT applicants. Seeing things differently: expert and consumer mental models evaluating combined oral contraceptives.

Communication regarding the benefits and risks of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) remains a challenge in view of persistent misconceptions about the 'pill'. The aim of this study was to investigate how women understand the benefits and risks of COCs, comparing their assessments with an expert model created from literature- and guideline-based research and reviewed by a sample of gynaecologists using the mental models approach. Two qualitative studies were conducted in Germany - a questionnaire-based study involving 30 gynaecologists with a mean of 218 COC prescriptions on average per month

Most adolescents who participate in school-based screenings for sexually transmitted infections do not perceive themselves at high risk of sexually transmitted infection.

Statements of study limitations have been made in a number of reports that voluntary participants in school-based screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may be individuals who self-select for participation because they perceive themselves at high risk of STI. We surveyed 3336 students participating in the New Orleans school-based screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea to determine their perceived personal risk of STI. Among all screening participants, 1183 (35.5%) estimated that their chances of getting an STI were pretty high or very high and 2153 (64.5%) estimated that their c

It wasn't Witchcraft--It was Huntington Disease!

Although the name of Andreas Rett is familiar to many from his eponymous neurogenetic syndrome, his other achievements involving the care of disabled children deserve special attention. His tireless advocacy helped to bring fundamental changes in the medical and societal attitude toward disabled individuals in a city that had recently seen more than 7500 disabled children and inmates of psychiatric hospitals actively euthanized by National Socialist (Nazi) decree. Most notably, this study demonstrates the remarkable changes that can be achieved single-handedly by a vocal and energetic physicia
